Hike 6:00:00 [3] 32.0 km (11:15 / km) +1400m 9:14 / km
shoes: Raptor 4

Run the Wild in Cranbrook with Lucas. Good turnout with some fast looking younger teams. We didn't have any high aspirations as neither of us were looking to run that much. The event started with a 4 km trail run that was mostly marked. We were about 5th or 6th team until the memory O when we jumped up to 2nd. Good thing we saw the one thing that Jen asked us about:) It would have been helpful to know what a memory O was beforehand perhaps as it seemed to mystify most of us. Got to the detailed orienteering in third and went around the three loops reasonably well considering this was my first time on an orienteering map (let alone a super detailed 1:4000 map) since last fall. I think we left 15 min behind the leaders (who I think have been national level orienteers so wasn't feeling too badly about our placing).

Had another 1km to the rogaine map pick up. Someone had said that it would take 30km to clear the map - so we thought why we can maybe do that. In retrospect I think that meant it would take 30km in addition to the several km we had already done, and consequently we would have been better served choosing a different route that dropped points. As it was after a couple hours (and 4 hours into the event) we rejigged the plan. This new plan was still not bad but we could have used 20 minutes extra as had to leave 130 points on course that were essentially on our way to the finish.

Anyway no one cleared the course - we left 12 or 13 points out there? With better strategy and cleaner nav (wasted time due to a parallel error on one control and then just walking past another control as we were busy coming up with a new plan and had to backtrack) we could have scored a few hundred points higher - still not enough to catch the winners (1900p to our 1550p). To do that we would have to get in shape and run more (which we barely did after the start although we did run 2km to the finish to avoid a penalty for being late).

Overall had a very good time. After the event I had a much better appreciation of the hills I could see from Pete and Caroline's house - their new house has a great view of the map area. We finished third and satisfied with that. It was a very interesting map although at 1:15,000 with lots of detail it was very hard to read at time. A magnifier would have helped. Thanks again to Nicki and the rest of the Run the Wild crew for putting the event together.

Bike 50:00 [2] 11.0 km (13.2 kph) +240m

Easy spin with Courtney around the Johnson trail in Invermere. Seemed so smooth compared to riding in Whistler last week.

Bike 57:00 [4] 15.0 km (15.8 kph) +350m

night Twoonie race. Love racing in the dark (at least when it isn't too greasy). Felt strong but seemed to be going backwards. Third lap was especially slow and then sped up again for the last lap. 3 minutes behind Brendan.
