Backcountry skiing (Coomback) 5:00:00 [3] 17.0 km (17:39 / km) +1700m 11:46 / km

Another overcast day so checked out some more tree runs. First went down the moraine which was tricky skiing due to the undulations, variable snow and alder. Maybe with another meter or two of snow it would be better. The climbed up to Shreddies Bowl. This uptrack was quite tricky as we had to negotiate cliff bands and downed trees. Good kick turn practice...

From the top did a short run into the bowl - fun but too short. Even the higher entrances to the bowl would only offer about 200m runs (and we weren't venturing up there on account of possible wind slabs). Next we headed north to sample the nice trees that we had spied on our uptrack. The first 200m were awesome, the next 10m were good, and then we ended up in the Shreddies slide path which looked better from the top then it ended up being. Too many alder and xmas trees - needed more snow (or wetter snow to knock the alder down). I had some fun turns but as the leader I got first tracks on some of the few more open sections - the rest of the crew pretty much followed the same line down).

Back up the same up track - a few sections could have been improved but overall didn't see a much better way up. From the top headed east along the edge of the western slide path. Better than the other side on the whole though again would be better with a little more snow.

Backcountry skiing (Megawatt) 4:30:00 [2] 14.5 km (18:37 / km) +1650m 11:52 / km

Mixed bag of weather today with some overcast and then some slight clearing which allowed is to get into the alpine. Down skier's right side of Lee's trees, then up into Cheap Scotch. Once in the alpine there appeared to be little wind effect and the route op to Swiss Col not too hazardous in terms of avy hazard so headed there. Had a nice alpine run back to treeline. Nice enough that we headed back for a second run though the wind was frigid on this climb. Some good views from the col but not super clear. Descended to the valley bottom on Oban which a pleasantly surprising enjoyable run as long as you avoided the creek gully. Some of the crew stuck around for one more fun run in Lee's Trees (steep right sided entrance into the middle line).

Backcountry skiing (Megawatt) 2:00:00 [3] 7.0 km (17:09 / km) +650m 11:42 / km

New Years trip to Sorcerer with Courtney, Atsuko, Brook/Andrea, Russ/Vikki, Stuart/Eiri, Adam and Mike. We flew in right before a storm dropped about 30cm of new snow (although given this was the drier side of the Selkirks the previous storm which had dropped over 80cm on the Monashees had only dropped 15-20cm here). HS was 150-200cm, Dec 18th facets about 70-80cm down and variably reactive. Biggest issue was a reactive stellar layer in the storm snow about 20-30cm down and possible wind slabs. The facetted snowpack meant that the alders were not as well buried as they should be given the HS.

This was our first time at this lodge and today was a bit of an exploration with mixed results. All the tree skiing near the lodge heads downhill - so no exploratory uptrack and we were dropping in somewhat blind. First run (Boulder Boogie) had some fun pillows but not quite what I was looking for in a warm up run (especially for Vikki who forgot her snowboard bindings and had to try and learn to ski on the fly).

Second run had some faffing around as we dropped in too early and were skiers left of where we had to be. Fun once we traversed (and I climbed back up after finding a good cliff) into the main Lee's Trees boulder field. Then set a new track back to the lodge which helped me get a lay of the land...

Classic ski 1:20:00 [2] 15.0 km (5:20 / km) +350m 4:47 / km

Again with Courtney and her parents. I was on classic while Courtney skated - more even speeds and we can even ski side by side - so romantic... A pretty casual ski as lots of stops running into friends and catching up.

Note

Ten year anniversary of me starting to log on AP. Time flies... cool to be able to look back on ten years of data (and memories).
