AR Competition race 5:50:00 [5]
FAC Deerhurst - Zoolander, Hot Shot Lawyer, and I formed Team Salomon-Suunto for this early season test of speed and navigation. Off the line on bikes, I somehow managed to convince Zoolander that a hammerfest off the start would do little to create a lead and do a lot at wrecking our (aka 'my') energy early. Thankfully, other teams had the same idea and the start of the race was very manageable. By CP2, we had a choice of route and we elected for the conservative road route which paid off from the stories we heard of the other one...bike whacking, muck, and forks in the road. However, a back and forth later on of our own hurt our pace but luckily, we dragged a few teams with us - that south part of the road just didn't match the map!
We left CP3/TA1 before the chase teams arrived which felt good and we made great time through the bush to CP4 doing our best impressions of "Last of the Mohicans - Deer Hunt" - I even sang the theme song a little to add flavour to the trek!
Once through CP4, we crossed the river, got our map soaked (my bad), and spied Team Beowulf approaching behind us. We knew that it would take them about 5-10 minutes to reach where we were but we took off up the steep embankment quickly. I later learned that they didn't see us which was probably a good thing as they would have kicked it up a notch knowing their competitiveness.
Atop the hill, we found a skidder trail, I grabbed Zoolander's tow, Hot Shot Lawyer set a torid pace, and we were off toward the canoes at CP5/TA2. The skidder trail led to a main dirt road along the south bank of the lake we wanted and Tyson lifted the pace again. I really want to see our split here as I've NEVER been made to run this quickly in an AR.
Grabbing the canoe, we took off back from whence we came on the lake, peering back to see if Team Beowulf was in sight - thankfully no. Entering into the Big East River, it was rock dodging time. We had a fun time going down the river trying to make sure that we kept the team IN the boat. Hot Shot Lawyer almost bailed a few times because the balance in the middle of the boat on a foam block coupled, our team weight, and the blows from the rocks made for a bumper car-like ride down.
Into CP6/TA3, we grabbed the bikes and took off just as Team Beowulf arrived - DAMN, we'd have to push some more! Too bad my map was unreadable at this point as it was in shreds from water damage, but thankfully, I'd memorized the route enough to fake it.
The riding was tough going to CP7A but my teammates pushed and encouraged me along and when we hit pavement, my weight seemed to pay off on the 60+km/h downhills.
We hit the line in 1st and I was pretty spent. My teammate are animals to say the least and were a great source of encouragement. I feel good that our navigation went fairly cleanly but I do know that my conditioning needs some work.
