Terrain (Park) 32:00 [2]

Equally split warming up for the first and second sprint.

Orienteering race (Park) 16:20 [4] *** 2.5 km (6:32 / km) +37m 6:05 / km

Sprint #1 at Adler Park (CAOC 1:4). Fun course with a nice mix of park running and woods. Overran 6 for 30 seconds and gave away another 15 seconds or so on 7 hesitating in the circle. Everything else was pretty clean. One of my better sprint efforts. Ran OK, but not a full-on effort because, well, because I'm a wimp I guess and just didn't feel like hurting that much today. Second to Olaru.

Orienteering race (Park) 17:14 [4] *** 2.2 km (7:50 / km)

Sprint #2 at Butler Park (CAOC 1:2.5). Includes the first swimming leg I've ever executed in an O-meet (although I've done it in adventure racing plenty of times); about 15m across a deep channel that was NOT marked as uncrossable between 2&3. There was an around route, but it was a lot longer and most of the fast folks swam. Was clean, but pokey to 8 and boomed 9 badly for about a minute lost, which was enough that Collins got me on this one as well. Everything else was pretty good. Finally found a decent running rhythm in the second half and ran the last K only 5 seconds slower than Olaru. Second on combined time.

Note

I was going to swing by Deer Grove on my way back for some control picking but the combination of the hot day and the fact that Joe Sackett was having a BBQ at his house after the sprints changed my mind. Probably a good move given what was happening to some folks that decided to run long today.

Portions of an old course at Palos North (CAOC 1:15). This has probably been my best Chicago map in terms of results, but that's mainly because Palos offers a lot of around options. Today, I focused on staying close to red line which meant a lot of green and some pretty sublte features. A decent session, though at this speed I'd like my contact to be a bit stronger. No big errors, but there were plenty of times I would have had a hard time stating my position to anything closer to 100m.

Wanted to remind myself what blasting through the green felt like, so I hammered the last leg which was a mix of green shades.

Cycling (Road) 59:00 [2]
weight:163lbs

In to work. No legs and I'm not sure why since I haven't run hard since Tuesday. It might have something to do with this morning's G value. I have no idea why that suddenly tanked. I switched to weekly reporting (I still measure daily) of weight to ignore daily fluctuations, but a 3 pound drop when it's already at the low end of the target range is more than just a blip.

Running (Road) 27:00 [2]

Ate a couple bowls of oatmeal and some fruit at work and that seemed to help a bit. By lunchtime I felt up to a run, despite the temps climbing back into summer range. Over to the park and back at an easy pace.

Ran the sprint course from last spring at Lafayette Park (1:4) at tempo pace.

In to work.

Cycling (Road) 1:23:00 [2]

From work to Queeny and then home after running.

HTFU training at Queeny (1:10). As with yesterday, I ran a bit easier and didn't have any trouble with the green. I guess that means the short term solution is to just get off the gas a bit when I go through the thick stuff. I hope that's not the permanent fix.

The original plan was to do some control picking at Cuivre River, but apparently the flexible hours arrangement doesn't cover 3 levels of management - my boss' boss' boss decided he wanted to meet with me at 5PM despite the "Out of Office" clearly marked on my calendar. Well, duty calls. The irony is, what he wanted to talk to me about is this stupid little side project I'm running that is looking at expanding the policy for flexible hours.

Anyway, that left no time to get out to CR before dark, so I rummaged through the maps I had at work and found Bill's quite excellent sprint courses for Cliff Cave (1:7.5). Hustled down there and got both of them in before it got too dark to read the map. Ran easy and navigated cleanly. First time this fall I've felt comfortable in the green stuff.

Terrain (Trail) 17:00 [2]

Blew off the morning track work in favor of getting some more sleep. After work went to Tyson for the real workout of the day. From the parking area to the start, mostly on the Chubb, but also cutting through the woods.

Orienteering (Woods) 59:00 [4] *** 3.8 km (15:32 / km) +470m 9:36 / km
32c

Control picking course with 4 uphill sections of 400-500m at about 20%. Each took 5-6 minutes and then there was 3-4 minutes of recovery, so in structure and intensity it was like cruise intervals, but I don't think an objective observer would use "cruise" to describe my progress on the steep stuff. Did satisfy my goal of maintaining a running stride throughout the course. Had to take really tiny running strides in some places, but I did manage to get both feet off the ground between each step. Map.

In to work.

Cycling (Road) 18:00 [2]

From work to Big Shark.

Running (Road) 24:00 [2]

Stashed my bike at the shop and ran over to Forest Park...

Orienteering (Park/Night) 29:00 [3] ***

... for some night control picking at tempo pace. Used my little Tikka light, which was even dimmer than usual since Baby-O was messing with it in the tent all night last weekend - made it difficult to see my footing at times, but managed to hold a decent pace without going down even once. Fun session. Probably a little light on technical value, but I'll be getting in plenty of "real" O practice this month.

Cycling (Road) 34:00 [2]

After the Shark team meeting, I rode the rest of the way home taking the direct route on Olive. After riding back 35 different ways, I've decided it's time to stop looking for a new route home every day. My focus for this month is getting as much time on maps as possible, so I'll have less time to wander around on the way home.
