Stretching/Warmup (Stretching and Warmup) 20:00 [2]

Wasn't enough time to warm up, but I got to the event centre later than I would have liked. Had a nice warmup run to the start though which was 1.5 kilometers away. Could have used more stretching time.

Orienteering (Norsk O-Festivalen Normal) 1:10:00 [3] 7.07 km (9:54 / km)

Normal distance race for the last day of the Norwegian O-Festival. It was also part of the Norwegian Junior Cup, so the best Juniors from Norway were there. I ran M17-18E.

The course was very steep and quite physical. We had a 1:15000 map which made it very hard to read the technical areas and slowed me down quite a bit. I still felt pretty tired from yesterday's run, so my pace was not very good. I had already lost 3 minutes just on running by the radio control about half way through the course. I then made about 8 minutes of mistakes on the second half as I was getting mentally tired and had trouble staying in the race. At the very end I felt good again as the woods opened up but it was too late to make up for anything.

Stretching/Warmup (Stretching and Warmup) 30:00 [1]

Stretching and warmup for my relay leg. Weather cleared up after the morning drizzle, and it was getting quite warm. I was feeling pretty good, although I was tired. I didn't get enough sleep last night and didn't feel fully recovered from yesterday's run.

Orienteering (Norwegian O-Festival Rela) 1:09:00 [4] 8.4 km (8:13 / km)

Last leg in the Norwegian O-Festival Relay for Tyrving's second team. I was planning to run the short 4th leg, but since Morten Nilstad Petterson got injured yesterday I had to take his leg.

The course was very physical and quite technical as well. I was focusing great, although I wasn't running very fast as I felt pretty tired. I didn't make any mistakes until the second half, and towards the end, but even then no more than 3 or 4 minutes. The first half was great and I was really feeling focused, but I was just too tired to push it much harder.

Jorgen Røstrup won the leg in 47 minutes, and Audun Weltzien ran it for Tyrving's first team in 58. I could probably have run it faster if I wasn't so tired, but at least I didn't make any big mistakes. I was pretty happy with my level of focus which is the most important thing.

Cool Down/Stretching (Cool Down and Stretching) 20:00 [1]

Cool down and stretching. The course took a lot out of me and I was feeling pretty tired. I also felt more stiff than usual so I stretched out a bit in the shade. This heat isn't much fun, but I guess it is better than most other places in the world.

Stretching/Warmup (Stretching and Warmup) 30:00 [2]

Stretching and warmup for my race. Two days of rest was probaly too much, although I felt pretty good. I think I have gotten over that weird stomach bug that was bothering me earlier in the week.

Orienteering (Short Course, Norwegian O) 32:36 [4] 4.14 km (7:52 / km)

Short course for the 17 and 18 year olds who didn't qualify for Norwegian Sprint Championship Finals. This of course included those of us who couldn't speak Norwegian well enough to get into the qualification in the morning.

The course was short with lots of controls, and covered a very technical area. I did fine on the first 6 controls as they were mostly uphill, and my focus was great. Unfortunately as soon as we started heading back down the hill I couldn't slow myself down enough to really read the map, and I started making errors. I lost close to 4 minutes on the next four controls simply because I wasn't reading the intricate areas around the control circles well enough. One of them, unfortunately, was another compass error leading off of a trail. Fortunately I was able to catch myself quickly, but it was rather frustrating. I managed to pull myself together before the end and the last kilometer and a half went well.

I managed to squeeze into 3rd place, but only because all the good runners were running the Sprint Final. I did beat Tore Mo though, which felt good even though he has been injured all spring and is probably still pretty out of shape since he didn't qualify in the morning. Some Swede won it in just under 31 minutes.

Orienteering (High Intensity Training) 56:54 [4] 6.2 km (9:11 / km)

Tyrving Club Champs. The weather was beautiful Norwegian summer weather at about 15 degrees and rainy. Perfect for running! Unfortunately I had no time to warm up, and since the race was a mass start I couldn't really start slowly either.

It was a very tough course with tow long legs with tough route choices. The terrain was very thick and quite slow. I ran with Morten Nilstad most of the time. I passed him at the third control and thought I had him beat when I took a great route choice to number 4, but I got confused as I was coming into the control. I kept seeing the top runners coming out of the control, but I was much further away then I thought, and I kept going farther and farther thinking that the control was just around the corner. I finally saw Morten Nilstad leaving the control area but still had a little bit of trouble finding it.

I caught up to him on the way to the next control, and pretty soon Morten Christophersen caught us too. We all ran together to the end, fighting for the lead. I was too tired to hold them in the end though and came in about 20 seconds behind.

I felt pretty good throughout the race although the terrain didn't really allow me to get my heart rate up too high. My legs felt good though. It was a very physical course since the thick underbrush and steep hills really do a number on your legs.

Carl Waaler Kaas ran it in 47 minutes winning by over two minutes. Pretty impressive for this terrain.

Cross-Training (Biking) 1:00:00 [3]

Biking to and from Jar Myra (swamp) for Monday Night Football (soccer). Was very cold and wet, especially so on the downhills. I found myself yearning for the nice steep uphills so that I could stay warm. It rained hard the whole time.

Cross-Training (Soccer) 2:00:00 [3]

Monday Night Football (soccer) at the Jar Swamp. It was cold and rainy so I had to play hard to stay warm. My legs felt great, but I started to have the same problem as yesterday when I tried to push the intensity level. It seems that whenever I get up to a certain threshold I start to feel weak in my stomach. Otherwise I feel absolutely great and there is no sign of anything wrong with me. I don't know what it is. Hopefully it will go away soon since tomorrow is the Tyrving Club Champs.

Stretching/Warmup (Stretching and Warmup) 20:00 [3]

Warmup run followed by some stretching. Feeling pretty good.

Interval Training (Hill Intervals) 18:00 [5]

Started running hill intervals. I felt great after the first one, but after the second one I felt queasy. My legs felt really good, but every time I tried to push it, my stomach felt weak. I had to stop after three. I don't know if I am getting sick, or it was just the heat. It is not that hot, but a lot hotter than what I have been used to for the past few weeks, so that may have something to do with it.

Cool Down/Stretching (Cool Down Run) 10:00 [2]

Easy cool down run. My legs still feel pretty good, but until I figure out what is wrong with my stomach I can't push it. Maybe a little more rest will do me good.

Note

Spent the day driving home to Oslo. Decided to take a rest day after all the great training in Estonia. Legs feel surprisingly good, but I am sure a rest day is probably the best thing for me right now. Will do some high intensity training tomorrow.

Orienteering (High Intensity Training) 55:00 [4]

Another run on Prangli 2, but this time with controls. Made another big compass error early on, but didn't have as much trouble with the map as I did last time on it. I am feeling much more comfortable with the terrain than I was at the beginning of the week, but still don't feel ready for JWOC. I will need some more time in the terrain first.

Anyway, I was caught by Audun Weltzien and Lars Skjeset after my mistake, and I ran with them the rest of the way. It was fun to run full speed with them and I was able to stay out front to avoid following them. I was able to keep up with Lars, but Audun was way too fast. Fortunately Audun kept making mistakes and we would pass him at each control. It was really cool to see Lars spike every control perfectly. His command of the course was quite impressive. I was feeling great too and was able to challenge them, but there was no way I was going to pull away. But I was able to push ahead at their pace to avoid just hanging behind and following.

Orienteering (Technical Training) 30:00 [3]

Training course in the Karaski valley. Very thick area. I was feeling great, but another big compass error early on blew my focus and I had to cut the course as it was impossible to get my focus back.

The map was a large valley with a river running through it. When I say large, I mean by Estonian standards as the sides of the valley are only 25 meters high and not terrible steep. In the valley was a large river and the course crossed it twice. I have learned that the most important thing in Estonia is just to push ahead whenever you hesitate in front of obstacles. It isn't likely that there will be a better way around. This was the case when I spent a some time debating whether or not to take the plunge in the river.

Orienteering (Technical Training) 36:00 [2]

Easy run on a map next to the area where the Classic will be. Very nice and open terrain, but much steeper than anything else I have seen. It didn't look like the general area was steep, but the map was situated on a hill which may not say much about the Classic terrain. Got a good look at the embargoed area as we drove by and it looked pretty nice. Fast and technical I think.

Orienteering (High Intensity Training) 45:00 [4] 7.08 km (6:21 / km)

Another nice course set out with Sport Ident by the Estonians on a map called Akste. Was supposed to be another mass start with the Polish but this time they backed out and took an easy training. I ran it real fast with the Norwegians but lost them after a small 30 second error on the second control. Audun Bjerkriem Nilsen injured his ankle a little and ran with me the rest of the way. I was feeling great and spiked almost all of them. Graham Gristwood, a Tyrving runner from the GB won it in 41 minutes and most of the Norwegians were under 43. I beat Morten C though who came in a few minutes after me.

The terrain was real fast and the running was nice. Hopefully the JWOC courses will be like this.

Orienteering (Technical Training) 30:00 [2]

Easy run on Valgesoo. I picked a shorter course to run, and was told that there would be controls on it, but when I found no control at number 1 and wasted a lot of time before assuring myself that I was in the right place and the control simply wasn't there, I lost my focus and decided to blow the course and simply explore the terrain.

Was very nice and open with alternating thick and thin pine areas that were very symetrical. These areas had straight rides running through them, but it was best to just ignore these. I had another big problem with my compass, and it was real frustrating figuring out where I was when I knew that my idea of north was very skewed. I will have to do some compass training next week.

After gathering my senses I ran a few controls at full speed at the end and felt pretty good. At least I am feeling good physically.

Orienteering (High Intensity Training) 54:46 [4] 7.0 km (7:49 / km)

Nice orienteering course set out by OK Kobras, the local club on a map called Praali. I had a pretty good run with some small mistakes. I lost about 2 minutes on number 6 after which Audun Bjerkriem Nilsen caught me. We ran together for the next two but then I waited for him to get farther ahead so I couldn't follow him. Soon after that Lars Skjeset caught me and I had to wait a little at the 11th control for him to get a lead. The rest of it went pretty cleanly although I wasn't running too hard anymore. Most of the Norwegians were just under 45 minutes and Audun Bjerkriem Nilsen won it in 43. I guess I am just not as fast as them in this thicker terrain, although I was able to keep up when we ran together.

Cross-Training (Evening Soccer) 1:00:00 [2]

Soccer game, Tyrving against non-Tyrving. A nice 4 on 4 game.

Orienteering (Technical Training) 55:00 [2]

Easy run with the Norwegians on my first map in Estonia. Prangli 2 was a pretty shitty map. The terrain was awful and the map was bad quality and out of date. I just jogged around for some time trying to get used to the terrain, but the map was hopeless. Hopefull the rest of the terrain won't be like this.

Orienteering (Technical Training) 45:00 [3]

Was supposed to be a high intensity training with the Polish, but most of the Norwegians decided to rest and recover from Jukola. The map was called Möksi. I decided to give it a shot with Graham from GB. We started in a mass start with the Polish and blazed the first 4 controls, but I was too tired to hold that pace. On the way to the 5th control we came across Øystein Sørenson who had a bloody nose so I slowed down and ran with him for a while. We quickly found the Polish again who were wandering around looking for the 5th control. The map was pretty bad in this location and we all had a tough time finding it. After that I just jogged around for a while checking out the terrain.

Orienteering (Jukola Leg 4) 55:31 [4] 6.7 km (8:17 / km)

Very technical course. I started some time before 4 o'clock and I wasn't focused enough. I felt pretty good, but a mistake on the first control blew the little focus that I had and I made two bad route mistakes on the next two controls simply because I wasn't focused. On the first three controls I had probably already lost close to ten minutes. I managed to collect myself after that and did surprisingly well on the rest of the course. I slowed down just enough on the real technical controls and spiked them all. It felt pretty good although my body was feelining awful towards the end. After the spectator control I had a big hill leg which killed me. 6.7k usualy fells too short but not at 4 in the morning. I believe that Mikkel Böstrom from Kalevan Rasti won the leg in 39 minutes. Anders Tiltnes ran 44 minutes for Tyrving's first team. The worst part was being beaten by Anne Överøyen who ran the same course on the 5th leg for Tyrving's second team in 54 minutes.

Event: The Jukola

Orienteering (Technical Training) 45:00 [3] 5.25 km (8:34 / km)

Easy run with Audun Weltzien and Carl Waaler Kaas on the model event course for the Jukola. Fairly thick terrain but easy enough to run in. Should be fast tomorrow.

Friday Jun 13, 2003 #

Orienteering (Technical Training) 54:00 [2]

Easy run with MC, and Audun and Eystein Weltzein in Karlstad on the way to the Jukola. Slow technical orienteering and some light jogging on trails. I felt great.

Stretching/Warmup (Stretching) 30:00 [1]

Since the training didn't start until 2315 I had all evening off so I put some time into stretching. It felt really good to stretch out my legs, and I needed it more than I realized.

Orienteering (Night Training) 1:10:00 [3]

Night training in Asker for the Jukola this weekend. We started at 2315 and the course took just over an hour in the dark. It never got completely dark, but in the woods it was dark enough that you needed a good light to be able to see anything.

Unfortunately I don't have one those huge Orienteering lights that light up the forest so I had to use my small caving light. It worked great for reading the map, but I couldn't see the ground too well, and as it was quite rocky I had to go slowly to keep from getting injured. I also noticed that since I couldn't see the ground well enough to be able to focus on the map, I had to stop in order to read the map. Because of this my technique was awful and I was very slow. I have never really done any difficult night orienteering before, so this was a nice challenge. I will have to do some more night training before I am comfortable enough to run a night leg in a relay.

Trail Run 1:50:00 [2]

Easy trail run with Anders, Nilstad, and some Asker runner. Beautiful trails, but a little too slow for my taste. I felt like having a hard run after yesterday's short course, but everyone else seemed to be tired after the weekend.

Monday Jun 9, 2003 #

Orienteering (Short Course) 27:30 [4] 3.5 km (7:51 / km)

Short course for the Norwegian Team Trials in southern Sweden. I felt great again despite the long course yesterday. Unfortunately I ran into some barbed wire just in front of the second control and ripped up my shin badly enough to give me a good shock. It made it hard to focus for the rest of the race and I made some big mistakes.

Audun Weltzien from Tyrving won it in just under 20 minutes, so it was another fast day. My time was pretty bad though and would have put me down near the end of the pack. Morten Nilstad Pederson had a great race coming in 11th with 22.55. I couldn't beat him today.

Sunday Jun 8, 2003 #

Orienteering (Norwegian Junior Team Tri) 1:08:00 [4] 10.5 km (6:29 / km)

Classic distance race for the Norwegian Junior Team Trials. I ran the course after all of the Norwegians since I wasn't eligible to compete.

The course was extremely fast, and surprisingly easy. I felt great and blazed it. I felt like I had had a great run up until two controls before the end when I got a little confused in the area leading up to the control and lost over a minute. However, after reviewing my course I realized I had made more mistakes than I realiezed.

My time was pretty competitive though considering I was running against the top Juniors in Norway. Anders Tiltnes from Tyrving won it in just under an hour. My time would have given me 11th place, and out of 40 or so of the supposed best in Norway, that isn't bad, considering they are all older than me. I guess I am getting a bit faster.

I beat Morten Nilstad Pederson, my training buddy, by two minutes, which was nice since he has been beating me all spring.

It felt great to have a half-way decent race with no big mistakes. My result helped boost my confidence a bit anyway.

Saturday Jun 7, 2003 #

Orienteering (Easy Training) 1:00:00 [2] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)

Easy training on the model event course for the Norwegian Junior Team Trials. It was raining pretty hard, but it felt good. The area was very fast and open, but required intricate navigation. Supposedly similar to Estonia. I felt pretty good and should be ready to run hard tomorrow.

Friday Jun 6, 2003 #

Cross-Training (Biking) 1:30:00 [2]

Easy biking with Sebastian and another friend.

Thursday Jun 5, 2003 #

Orienteering 1:10:00 [3] 6.5 km (10:46 / km)

Tough training course on the northern part of the Vestmarka map. It started out with a line-o to the first control, and then 6 and a half kilometers of tough orienteering. I did pretty well in the first half, but made lots of mistakes towards the end. I ran at an easy speed, and my legs felt pretty good.

Wednesday Jun 4, 2003 #

Orienteering (Family Relay) 1:24:00 [4] 11.2 km (7:30 / km)

Today was a local family relay. Of course since I am the only person in my family here I had to run all 4 legs myself. The courses were short fortunately, and the total was only 11.2k which was perfect for a good training run. Unfortunately, courses 3 and 4 were the same as courses 1 and 2 so I had to run the same two courses twice.

The course for legs 1 and 3 was 2.1 kilometers and the course for legs 2 and 4 was 3.2 kilometers.

The first course was quite easy, about yellow difficulty, so I blazed it in 11 minutes. However, I perhaps ran a little too fast and ended up making quite a few mistakes on the second course running it in 34 minutes.

About half way through the second leg I decided to run the third and fourth legs from memory. Unfortunately since I hadn't thought of this when I was running the first leg, I didn't really make an attempt to memorize the first course, and 34 minutes after last looking at the course I was a little confused. As a result I lost a lot of time trying to rack my brains and figure out where the controls were. I ended up running the third leg in 17 minutes, 5 minutes slower than my first time on that course.

The fourth leg was better since I had made some sort of attempt to memorize it, but with a 17 minutes break whilst running the third leg I still had some trouble trying to remember it. However I managed to run it with no mistakes in 23 minutes which was actually as fast as Audun Weltzien. A pretty good run nonetheless.

I ended up with the fastest time on the relay, but unfortunately I wasn't eligible to win. I won a Pepsi anyway though. I think my time of 11 minutes on the first course (first leg) and 23 minutes on the second course (fourth leg) were the fastest of the day which was also quite good since I had some stiff competition.

Morten Nilstad Pederson ran the first two legs as well, and Anders Tiltnes and Audun Weltzien ran the last leg.

Tuesday Jun 3, 2003 #

Orienteering 46:19 [4] 6.0 km (7:43 / km)

Fast race with Morten Nilstad. He started a minute behind me and caught me as soon as I made a mistake on the third control. We ran together until I managed to get a lead by taking a better route to the 8th control. He then caught me again as he took a better route to the 9th control and we finished the course together.

It felt great to be running at full speed again and still manage to maintain focus. I didn't make any mistakes that were due to a lack of concentration, although I did misread the map three times resulting in about 2 minutes worth of mistakes. Overall it was a good race though. The best time was 43 minutes, but we weren't really expecting to beat Anders Eide. He is on the Norwegian cross country ski team and has been competing in the Olympics so he is in pretty good shape. He keeps beating us each week, but it is to be expected. I don't think I could have beat his time even if I had run perfectly. I was feeling great today, although I had forgot to bring my orienteering shoes and running without spikes did slow me down a bit. It would have been close though had I had a perfect race. Nilstad also beat me by a minute since he started after me and we finished together, so I was third.

Finally a good solid run though, and that is the important thing.

Monday Jun 2, 2003 #

Note

Decided to take a day off from training just to see what happens. I will focus on the race tomorrow and maybe I will be able to concentrate when I need to.

Orienteering (Local Race) 1:09:34 [3] 6.5 km (10:42 / km)

A local race run by Nydalen Skiklubb. The day was hot and muggy (for Norway), and the woods were pretty thick.

I noticed right away that the course was tough, but I never really settled down and focused on the hard parts. I blazed the first two controls giving myself an early lead, but as soon as I hit the first difficult control I made a mistake. I quickly relocated however and hit the control only losing a minute or two and keeping myself in the race. Unfortunately, I still didn't settle down and focus enough on the course even after that first blunder. I ended up running right by the 4th control into an area that was impossible to relocate in. I spent over 10 minutes trying to relocate before finally giving up, sitting down and reanalyzing the situation. I pretty much knew I had blown the race, so I decided to take the rest as training.

I finally managed to find the control (in total I lost over 12 minutes), and walked the next one to regain my concentration. The rest of the course went well although I wasn't running too fast since I had lost my motivation.

It was pretty frustrating to have another awful race. I can't seem to focus when I need to. I have to make a much more concious effort to concentrate than I have been. I don't know why I am failing to do this, so I will have to work on it in the upcoming weeks.

At least I felt good physically. All this training is helping me physically, but my problems with focus haven't seemed to improve in the slightest.

The funny thing is, even after my horrible run I was still in the middle of the results list. There must have been some pretty bad runners there today. The winning time was just over 57 minutes and Morten Nilstad took 2nd with 62. Not much competition today I guess. Morten said he had a pretty bad run too.

Cool Down/Stretching (Cool Down and Stretching) 15:00 [1]

Cool down run and stretching after the race. I felt pretty good, but surprisingly more stiff after running than I had felt at the beginning of the day.
