Note

So staying in New Zealand indefinitely at the moment. As of Thursday everyone with the exception of key workers is in self isolation and only contact is allowed with people in the household or for essential shopping.

Still allowed to travel locally so can have a bit of variety to the running at least.

Super fun. One big miss at 6 with bad direction on a slope off a round vegetation boundary and with a lack of compass I was wandering, then forgot the scale was 1:5k on the next leg and massively overran.

Also lost a ton of the time on the run in going round, just a hit and miss with how rough the green would be.

It was good as was open farmland so not even on tracks half the time. The bike skills were lacking a bit and crashed early on and took me a while to pry the chain out of the gears but got into it a bit after that.
Think I'm going to stick to foot-o for now though.

MTBO feels a bit silly when I could run the course quicker.

Back on the area, trig, lighthouse then planned route was a private road then a swim across a river and to where the Robertson's were having a picnic. Well they were hiding in the bushes and I ran past them. Despite seeing me Laura didn't say anything as I kept on running trying to find them for another 15min.

Petone Sprint.

Some fast running and some good bits. Lost 30-40s as New Zealand schools have these childproof gate locks which were also Jonny proof, so after trying for 15s I assumed it was locked so went to another one, then another runner turned up and showed me how to open it.
Otherwise was feeling pretty speedy.
Looking forward to a bed now for the rest of the trip and maybe this log will be more like a training log than a holiday journal.

Walk from Mt Fyffe hut to the summit then along this cool ridge and down some steep scree to the saddle. Luckily there was plenty of loose deep sections so could run down.
Then some proper bush bashing and boulder hopping down the creek to the riverbank for an hour or so to Kowhai hut.
From here it was pretty easy going out and back to the car.
