Adventure race race (Espresso) 11:40:00 [3]
shoes: Keen Ridgeline

Yay! my first adventure race....

As with all I had learnt before the race I quickly discovered that things will go wrong and things will go right, just keep going and it will all work out.
First problem occurred as we got up to get onto the bus, my hydration pack in my PFD had emptied as something was on the nozzle during prep time. There was a big wet patch on the floor next to my seat and it had nothing to do with pre-race nerves. I quickly grabbed a gatorade from one of the trunks and off we went.
We had a bit of bad luck with the boats with Steve and Liz gaining water and Myself and Matt having a slow leak on one side. (Matt needed a slow leak himself not far from the end of the paddle leg) Nothing to worry about as many others seemed to have similar problems and we finished in a reasonable position. After getting dry, warm and changed we were a little disappointed to discover the rope bridge dipping feet back into the cold water. After crossing the bridge I stayed on (standing on the far side) to help a few more across as I had appreciated others doing it for me however my feet paid the price for a while into the first trek.

Nav on the first trek was straight forward in the daylight, we jogged/walked at a steady pace and hit everything with no troubles. We caught up to Pulsation at the last checkpoint before TA2 as they were having trouble finding it. We found it just as they were thinking about turning back and I think that helped us later when we needed them (great guys, we really appreciated there help later on).
A quick re-route by Steve had us into TA2 quickly and after a quick bite off we went.

We found ourselves on a few unmarked tracks in this leg but seemed to adjust well and keep going with no dramas. Some delay at an intersection looking for CP6 had us joined by Danger, Boltboi and Matt as well as another 2 teams. One team took off the wrong way and after analyzing the terrain the steep downhill definitely looked the way to go. DM, BB and M took off down the hill and after seeing there red lights disappear to the right (which was expected if they were correct) I felt more than happy to follow even with the other team disagreeing. So we followed, eating some of the recently collected mud flying off the front tyre on the way down.
After 6 we took a short cut down a steep hill to a road that took us to the bottom of steeper muddier hill that looked like it would be fun to push bikes up. Luckily for us there was a CP at the top (sometimes thing go right). Coming down on the bikes did not look like fun so we got off to push. Some more hills sounded like a good idea so we kept off the numerous flat sections that seemed to stretch on forever and with some clever nav skills found some of the hidden hills.
A small hiccup at CP9 had us join up with the Pulsation boys again to backtrack slightly before heading into TA 3/4.

Sometimes things go wrong......
We made one of those mistakes that you only ever make once (like forgetting to take your pants to a rogaine). No maps for the next 2 stages as they were in the wrong trunk, Steve is taking the blame but I should have picked them up if I had any doubts and Liz was thinking the same. And anyway, as Steve pointed out later it had some positive effects and we can't say how things would have gone if we had taken our previously planned routes. We may never have met the nice man with the rifle who came out to ask us kindly remove ourselves from his property. And we may not have pushed so hard in subsequent stages to keep up with team Pulsation. I played less of a part in the navigation in these stages as Steve and one of the Pulsation guys consulted over the maps however I should have been paying more attention as when called upon for another opinion I had little to offer.
Looking back we should have done what BB,DM and M had done and gone for he quick points as we lost time in a stage where you can actually get some back....

I'm going to bed now......

Run 26:59 [3] 5.13 km (5:16 / km)
(sick)

Still felt a bit crappy at work today but I wanted to go for a run after work to see how I would go.
Felt Ok when running, just kept a steady pace.
Feeling a bit sick afterwards but I think it is from my ulcer which flared up after a day of throwing up on thursday. I know that will improve in a couple of days so all should be good.
