Eagle trail variation with Jacko & Juffy.
Pretty steady effort to start with, up the first hill after Jackos compulsory early run pit stop. Not worrying about HR as I expected the downhills would be run at a nice easy pace to recover from the climbs. After we got onto the nice singletrack section Jacko was running well in front going up the hill and mentioned that he almost hit a tree while looking at his watch. I mentioned that I don't check my watch anymore on the technical sections for that reason. Of course all this talking of checking watches made me want to check all the very important data I was accumulating while running this section and after a couple of watch beeps something went thud... me. I hit the deck like a sack of spuds.
After a refuel at the top we took off down the hill with Juffy in front... then he was way in front, flying down the single track. Jacko asked if I wanted to pass him and I did and started to chase down Juffy. I caught up but with the pace he was going and the technical singletrack there was no way I was going to get past. I'd usually run this section at an easy pace but thanks to Juffy, never again. It's an awesome section to run fast although would be very messy if something went wrong.
We kept a steady pace up the next climb before a quicker than usual descent again but not as quick as the last one. At this point we changed the plans as the recovery downhill sections weren't really happening so we decided on one more climb before a gradual and more reasonable paced decent back to the Heritage trail and an easy effort back to the start.
I really enjoyed this run although as Jacko pointed out we didn't take in the amazing views due to the quicker than expected pace on the downhills.
Good times.

I had the day off today & wanted to get in a decent run but had changed my mind so many times about where to run.
I received a nice shiny new toy in the mail yesterday and thought it was only fitting to head out to the hills for its first outing.
I started at Bells car park, crossed the river and took the more direct, steeper climb to the top. Running along the top of Jumbuck Hill I could see the nasty weather was not far away. During the early part of the descent I almost fell into a sinkhole in the middle of the trail. Not long after I was going down a very slippery steep section and took a tumble hitting my shoulder on a sharp tree branch as I landed resulting in a small cut & it feels like it will turn into a nice bruise later on.
It was a little swampy in parts, running the trail along the river to Walyunga & the rain was starting to come down very hard and thunder & lightning was not too far away. I put my jacket on and started to run up the middle trail when the weather turned worse. Very windy, heavy rain and lightning getting closer.
After about 400m going up the trail everything lit up and I felt the ground shake. I questioned the sanity of continuing up the hill with the lightning so close so turned and ran back down what was by now a small creek to the upper car park toilet block where I cowered for a while until the worst of the weather had passed. Good Times!
After a while the lightning had faded and I headed back out into the heavy rain back towards Walyunga pool. I had noticed the water level mark was getting close to .4 & Bells had looked to be doable if you didn't care too much about your boat. I ran up Walyunga road before turning onto a trail near the gate and heading back up & over Jumbuck hill.
Running along the top of the hill the rain started to ease off. I took the longer way down towards Copley Rd then running across the hill before joining my outward trail.
A very enjoyable adventure.
