MTB Ride race (MTBO) 2:14:34 [4] 38.0 km (16.9 kph)
ahr:148 max:176 shoes: Anthem MTB

MTBO long course state champs at Jarrahdale.

Had a serious discussion with Rach about warm fires and red wine but we somehow ended we heading out the door. I think I was one of the last starters and had a good chuckle watching Pete and Andy clear and check after their brilliant idea to rigidly tape their e-tags to their bars.

I had put foot straps on flat pedals to try out. they reccomend trying out on flat open ground first.....

1 - a little slow, ended up going up to the main trach and heading back in again. Saw Andy about 30m past the start triangle Andre caught me before the control.
2 - just rode there.
3 - same.
4 - went eastern route and lost it. Rach overtook me here and I needed to overtake her again.
5 - overtook some people just near the control and rode past it. whoops
6 - No problems gettign to the junction. Swore for a bit until I looked left and saw the control. was jsut leaving as Jake and Pete came backto the control.
7 - let Jake back past when I overshot a corner. I saw it but for some reason I didn't think I needed to take it. Pete came past a bit laster
8 - went the northern route and made up time on Pete and Jake.
9 - I went straight out from the fence corner then met Jake coming the other saying "I know where I am" he was still there 30 mins later apparently. I went the long way around the loop but I knew whereI was most of the time.
10 - followed Pete and Andre most of the way then went past Pete when he was looking at his map when I saw the flag.
11 - almost caught Andre bu t followed him in to it.
12 - took the main track in. put in the big overtake on Andre up the hill then my Bento box started coming loose and slid back along the top bar. just to add to the challenge. took the wrong track near the control and then let myself get distracted by Andre going past me when I thought I went the wrong way. Finally turned around and went the right way. Last I saw of Andre for the day,
13. went to the west of the farm, almost missed the last turn in.
14. rode east along the fence. interesting track. saw Pete at a control near the track entrance that he couldn't undestand. found dome fun creeks and puddles on this track.
15. no real issues, struggled on the rock gardens with the pedals
16. Gave Wil a mouthful because he was walking his bike around a puddle. found out why very quickly after riding into the swimming pool. Still managed to ride out though. Wil followed me to the control that I unexpectedlty drilled sinceI thought I was a track to early when I found it.
F - decided to take the fun way since i had made so many mistakes already. Went along the southern side of the big hill but lost the track I was following and got entertained by hearing Wil hit everything behind me. went up the first downhill from the traditional 6 hour course which upset me. I like that downhill. I made up for it when I saw another downhill and spun 180 to ride it. again Wil followed. Idiot. had to ride the big uphill on soft gravel to the finish to make up for my downhilling. still worth it.

Pedal experiment was not good, the straps were too loose and I really got no benifit from them, they just got in the way. I will try and get them sorted before killa. may not work.

Ended up third. felt a little guilty about that considering my prep and effort. plus some very average nav. but didn't feel guilty drinking a stout out of my nice new glass.

And the second rest day. good beer. good food. funny trying to teach Rach how to do flying starts on the new MTB pedals whilst not sober.

Commute 38:00 [3] 16.0 km (25.3 kph)
shoes: Anthem MTB

I am probably ready to go back on the roadie but chose to ride the Anthem for a bit of safety in this arvo's expected storm. That and I realised I haven't washed the gel and energy drink off it from the weekend.

A bit warmer this morning which was nice. Northerly up the freeway wasn't nice. I hid behind a roadie for the most part.
5 PM

Commute 37:00 [3] 16.2 km (26.3 kph)
shoes: Anthem MTB

Nice ride home after all the hype about the weather, gotta enjoy the tail wind on the rare occasions i get one.

Legs were predictably smashed after the weekbut held up OK. a couple of enforced rest days coming up to recover.

(injured)

went to see Liz, I am allowed a 45 min paddle this weekend. woo hoo!
6 PM

Run (Kings Park) 53:48 [3] 9.71 km (5:32 / km) +166m 5:06 / km
ahr:148 max:176 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline 3

Kings Park Group Run. Only Muz and Robin seemed interested in running fast tonight which was good since the legs were predictibly smashed after the last few days. Struggled a bit at the start, won the KOM points up the green mile then struggeld the rest of the way home. got damn near stopped by a steep climb on the law walk. beer was good.

Muz came up to me and said that they weren't planning to include a 4 in a boat section in this years race but since I threatened to feed him his own spleen with a spoon thy have changed their plans and will do it. And name the leg after me. He's probably joking but I am going to sharpen my spoon nonetheless.

Note

Got a call from the shoe store, they won't honour the warranty on the shoes as they claim the grip falling off was not a manufacturing defect. They're just shit shoes. now I need to find a new trail shoe dammit.
6 PM

Run hills (Tooms Group) 1:11:30 [4] 12.06 km (5:56 / km)
ahr:144 max:179 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline 3

Reaobold east reps, 3 long reps from perry lakes drive at threshold, fast, threshold then 3 shorts from the nonexistant post at fast, threshold, fast.

First rep hurt, second rep really hurt. third rep wasn't flash either. started to feel better after that but the glutes and hammies kept reminding me of what I did on the weekend. Fletch paced me for the last rep which was the fastest of the day and faster than last week too. I still have a lot to learn about pacing and how hard I can really push and Fletch's help was much appreciated.

Commute 40:00 [3] 16.0 km (24.0 kph)
shoes: Anthem MTB

Got up early to go in early...... then didn't leave the house. It was damn cold out there.

Wasn't actually too bad but the toes and fingers were fairly numb by the time I got to work. Lower hammies really tight and sore after the weekends festivities.
5 PM

Commute 38:00 [3] 16.2 km (25.6 kph)
shoes: Anthem MTB

ride home, was just cruising when a roadie went past, OK, then a flat bar commuter. fine. then a guy on a boulder. no worries... hang on.

I had to work hard to catch up to them, then had a pretty cruisy run behind the 7 foot tall bloke on the boulder. Until he launched an attack of the front that I thought the others would follow. but dthey didn't. So I had to go myself and bridge the gap then hang in whilst he put in an effort.

He finally slowed down so I went past, asked how tall he was (6'4") and then led him the rest of the way to Canning bridge. good thing I don't have an ego otherwise it could have been a hard ride home.
