Ridley Creek SP Short Course 1 (East). 2.5km, 80m. Ridley Creek has thick and scratchy vegetation when it's not Summer, so the plan for today was to always use trails unless the woods were mapped as white. Controls were placed just off trail in most cases, or in white woods, so that plan worked pretty well. Courses by David Radspinner (and Sam K) offered some good route choice options. Temperature was in the low 80s and the dew point was in the low 70s, making for tough running conditions. There was lots of walking.

Good run. Misread things at 3, left the trail too soon and checked a wrong boulder but figured it out pretty quickly and only lost about 30 sec. Lost a minute going to 5 when I missed a hard-to-see side trail. Hit all the others well.

Orienteering race 30:32 intensity: (1:33 @1) + (34 @2) + (3:26 @3) + (15:17 @4) + (9:42 @5) *** 2.8 km (10:54 / km) +128m 8:52 / km

Ridley Creek SP Short Course 2 (West). 2.1km, 115m climb. More controls in white woods on this course. Lots of climb (there were a couple of route choices which would've each saved 20-25m of climb, but I didn't use them). Did this course second, so it was even hotter and even more walking. Hit everything pretty well, except for fumbling around in the control circle to actually find the feature/bag for several of them.

Scottish 6-Day, Day 5 on Culbin (west) map. Complex dune terrain separated by flat areas of heather. Varying levels of vegetation on the dunes. Middle distance course, 2.9k, 50m climb. 1:7500 with 2.5m contours.

Would've been a very good run except for control 3. A 200m leg in complex contours with light and medium green vegetation. Most of the contour detail was form lines and single contours and was difficult for me to see with the green on the map and the reduced light from green in the terrain. The connecting line had been cut but still obscured detail which may have been useful. So, I couldn't figure out what was going on and wandered a bit, finally hitting the herd path exiting the control as I headed to relocate on a (not-so-nearby) trail. Lost about 5 minutes. Hit all the others well and mostly satisfied with the run. 26th of 68 in M70L.

This concludes the Scottish 6-Day (which is actually now only 5 days of competition, for some good reasons). Outstanding organization, some really fine and challenging terrain with excellent maps, and an all-around good vibe. In the "overall" competition (XC-type scoring, counting best 4 of 5 scores) I ended up 18th of the 70-some competitors on the M70L course.

Checking out Duffus Castle ruins. First building on the site was in 1151.

Interesting juxtaposition as three fighter jets screamed overhead doing touch-and-go practice landings at the nearby RAF base while we walked around the ruins.
