Much harder today. Tied 9th. Tired for sure. One bad control, #2, probably 2 minutes. Plus several others where I'd see the control and as I was approaching I'd be thinking, sure hope it's mine. Not the sign of good technique.

Course was harder partly because of more complicated areas, also that a lot of the stuff shown as white had knee-high vegetation. No thorns, and not hard to get through, but a bit of a shock after yesterday's fairways. Best time was 38+, no way I could have gotten anywhere close to that.

But, the good news, no falls. Tired and achy but not unreasonably so. Seems like I ought to be able to be at the start tomorrow. :-)

Event: POM 2023

8 AM

orienteering race 26:10 intensity: (1:03 @2) + (17:44 @3) + (7:05 @4) + (18 @5) 1.93 mi (13:33 / mi) +210ft 12:17 / mi
ahr:145 max:162

POM, day 1, M75. 2.9 km, 26:10. Such a pleasure. Last time I orienteered in Europe was in 2015, Scottish 6-day, walked in after a couple of controls after a calf crapped out on me, plus a sore back that was of long-term concern. Never expected to be back.

But life is full of surprises, and some of them are even good, even at this age. Since I've started to do little bits of orienteering again, the thought has crossed my mind that another Europe O' trip might be possible. But if so, even that would be under my new rules of engagement -- first priority is not to get hurt, second is to not skip a control, and third is in general to ratchet the competitiveness down, way down.

A trip to Portugal became a possibility late last year. Rhonda/Charlie and Leslie/George were going, and Margi/Phil were interested, and, well, how about Gail/me? Why not. So we made plans, and I upped my running training to 5 miles a week (on a good week), and we entered the event. Key word there is "we" -- an entry for Gail, too. Last time she orienteered at all was 2015.

Today was marvelous. Everyone finished with distinction. I had a good run/walk, just a minute wasted at #4, no big deal. Just really happy to make it around with no skipped controls and no ailments. Get to go at it again tomorrow.
