Carry golf 2:00:00 [1] 10.0 km (12:00 / km) +15m 11:55 / km

Billy Caldwell GC, Niles. A decent nine-hole course. Played it twice: once with two other golfers, the second time alone. Played much better with the other two. Perhaps I should remember that, and start looking for more partners than just Larry. I seem to take more time to consider my shot. And I feed off of others' good shots, and try to make good shots myself. A nice recovery day after the ten-miler.

Tried to get Sari interested in an early bike ride to our favorite pancake house up on the Northshore. She just grunted and rolled over in bed. So I took the next best option: golf.
El then bus with good connection despite Sunday schedules; one hour door to door; no hiking, no range practice, no delay.

Soldier Field 10-Miler. Rode bike 7mi from house to race. What a zoo at 6:30am. Super security for ~12 500 runners. Guards and fences everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised that, even at $80/head Fleet Feet still lost money on this race.

But even with all that, race was pretty much on time. And race course, while predictable (run down Lakefront for 5 miles and turn around) was still pleasant. Started slowly and seem to have sped up somewhat...kept thinking of Charlie's comment about his increased enthusiasm coming into the barn. Or maybe it was the free Goose Island beer at the finish line:

4-13:54
5-13:58
6-14:02
7-13:30
8-12:44
9-13:22
10-12:54...Finish on 50-yd line inside Soldier Field, video on Jumbotron overhead. Cannot imagine being down there with the stands filled, everyone screaming, and 250-lb monsters bearing down on you.

Bittersweet GC, Gurnee. Long train ride, then bus in Waukegan, then walk along pleasant suburban streets up near the Wisconsin border. I love this course; each hole is a different challenge. But still not shooting particularly well. Fairway woods completely unreliable. Irons, hybrids and my Ping driver are my mainstay now. But so what? Most pros never use fairway woods either!

Out at 5:45am. Rain commenced in the first mile, and continued heavily at times until I pulled up at the Starbucks for an hour's respite and morning coffee. My Starbucks buddies very nicely gave me a towel so I could dry off. Then out again, over to Newport to get Ralph set up with his work for today (principally installing window a/c units) and back home for a very welcome hot shower and dry clothes at 9am.

Palmira GC, St Johns, Indiana. Very stormy, windy morning. But Larry and I teed off and played anyway, with no casualties except for the score card. Took it philosophically. And adjourned to Three Floyd's for lunch with Phil.

Marovitz (Waveland) GC. With incoming rain storms forecast, I biked over there at dawn and teed off at 6:30am. A couple other duffers joined me on the second tee, and we played a very enjoyable nine holes. Took 4 strokes off my 2009 PR for this 9-hole course...quite an improvement. The greens were in fantastic condition, and I one-putted three of them.

After my round of golf, went out for an extended run along the Lakefront, perhaps my last long run before Saturday's 10-Miler. Felt weak and tired throughout the run, perhaps because of the race yesterday? But I was thinking about Matzah Ball, and all the running he was doing.
