After last years fiasco of coming in over 45 minutes over time, Simpy and I had a much different race strategy today for our second Snowshoe Raid. Our plan was to run a very conservative race, with emphasis on fun and training (as was evident by his extremely bulky pack). We wanted to be closer to the finish to make our audibles, so we ended up planning a very modest loop in the Loree Forest, with hopes to be exiting that section in about 40-45 minutes. From the start we pulled in 128, 129, 130 and 137. We then hit 136 with our only hesitation in the nav, where we took the time to check a bearing. It literally only cost us 1-2 minutes, but still Simpy beat himself up for it (and it was funny because he pretty much nailed every other control, before and after). :) From there we hit 135 on the way out., leaving the first section right on time.
After Loree, we crossed the road for 110 and 104, and then started the long road run to map 2.
We scooped 102, and then our first decision was whether or not to try and do a down and up for the 120pt CP at the base of the hill. Given we remained on schedule we decided to go for it. Going down had some sketchy parts, and the first half of the climb back out was steep enough to get the legs and lungs screaming, but the rest wasn't too bad. We then hit 178 and then headed west to pick up two lonely CPs in some farmer's fields.
Another long road run, where we had time to figure out the last part of the route. We passed the Matrix check-in with 20 minutes, and decided to keep with the conservative and split to get C and A. Back up the hill to check-in, and then arguably the most enjoyable part of my day with a long blast down the ski hill which included some super fun running combined with some ass-skiing.
We knew we would be cutting things close and pushed hard but came in 45 seconds over time. We finished with 550pts after a 10 point deduction, which to our amazement left us sitting tied for 9th overall with the TreeHuggers/Running Free...who ended up taking the tie breaker because they bagged the points in WAY less time. However it is strange that given our very modest goals, we had managed to run perhaps our best DontGetLost race.
It was a really awesome day. Even before the results, we were both extremely happy with our race plan and execution. Awesome course, conditions were great, we had a ton of laughs, and we got to hang with all the friendlies afterwards.
