I started earlier than I usually do becuase I wanted to go mapping at happyland afterwards.

I wasn't very fast but was fairly clean except one control. It was great running a course on this excellent terrain on a great map. I was able to successfully read the details. I used several root stocks as navigation (which doesn't happen often as usually the root stocks aren't accurate). It also helped that several of the control locations I was familiar with since I had used them as control points during the NRE Royal Romp event. I noticed before I went out that the courses left the "mapped" portion of the map for a few controls. That portion was probably 20 years since it has been mapped.

1: I started down the trail but then cut down the reentrant where I had the start for the NRE because I know it was good running. I was a little slow on the final approach. Starting early it was still cold and my eyes started watering so I couldn't read the map well. I guess I should have warmed up more.

2: read the contours right into the control.

3: Leaving the mapped area. I ran down the left side of the stream initially because I know it was mapped (by me). Eventually I cut over to the other side where it wasn't mapped. Relied on contours. Little off close to control and had to correct.

4: Poorly drafted pits that looked like a 'W'.

5: Run back onto the map. I ran right to the area but didn't see the control or the feature. Both were located behind a tree event though I was 10 feet from the control.

6: Straight'ish. Picked up the cairn 1/3 of the way there confirning I was right where I was supposed to be. Went right to the control.

7: Straight ish. Lost some time finding a convenient spot to cross the stream as I didn't want to get wet. Read contours right into control. I was tired now.

8: I did not do a good job of reading the details on this leg. I hit the middle of every gully which meant a lot of climbing down and back up. Read the contours and rootstock right into the control. I think this control was hidden also. After punching I just stopped and took a long time to turn the map over, relocate, figure out where I was going. So this wasn't an in and out punch so really broke up the flow.

9: Read the contours. As I was going up and over the ridge Stephen and I crossed paths. We both zigged to get to the control. He got there ahead of me.

10: I was familiar with this control location. Stephen was running faster and got further ahead of me but I caught up when he veered off in the downed tree area. We both ran along the edge of the hill to the control.

11: Stephen and I still together. We took different routes but I could see him most of the way there.

12: Stephen went right down to the stream area. I though I could get through the green and angle more to it. I was wrong. Stephen ran away and I didn't see him again for awhile. I was slow in the first part then cut down to the stream area. Ran along the stream area. I drifted right and hit the rootstock/ride so knew right where I was. I drifted right again but when I hit the rootstock by the ditch I again knew exactly where I was and went to the control. No sign of Stephen so I assumed he was long gone.

13: I again drifted way right. I was able to read the subtle contours so realized where I was and went up and over the spur to the control. I waved my SI-Air over the control and nothing happened. I had to come back and manually punch and wake up the controls. It was as this point I realized Stephen had been doing this ahead of me so this meant I had gotten back in front of him. As I was leaving the control I saw Stephen coming up behind me.

14: I started off ok, with Stephen following right behind me. At one point Stephen drifted right. I then lost all track of what was what. I was having trouble telling what was up and what was down. I had pulled up way too short. I was looking for control in the wrong area. I wandered a bit having no luck. Finally decided I had over shot so started heading back (the wrong direction). When I saw the other hill, I stopped and figured where I was. From that point the terrain made sense and I went right tot he control. Control was already woken up so I assumed Stephen was well in front of me again.

15: Back on track. Slow but right to the control.

16: I was worriied about this leg. Long leg with not much to navigate by, and control was in a vague area. I did the best I could and went to it. WHEEEW!

17: Almost done, but back into the greener parts of the map. Just kept going but getting slow.

18: Slow but no issues. .

Fin: up reentrant to the epunch registration tent. I couldn't find the finish control. I came to full stop and was just standing there looking around. I was about to ask Valerie where it was when I saw it past the tent. Not a good location. I saw several other people do the same thing. I was surprised that Stephen wasn't in yet

overall, except for the one leg, a good but slow run.

Doing more mapping at Happyland. I was tired from orienteering and having to climb over fallen trees looking for depressions wasn't fun. when I got to more open area it was ok. As usual, lots of vegetation changes to make. I did mostly cover the areas I wanted to.
