Cycling 1:30:00 [2]

Easy spin down to Albion and around with Bash and Stan the road 'bent man.
Too hot and smoggy to push hard, but a very nice ride.

Monday Jun 25, 2007 #

Running (Commute) 1:00:00 [1]

Fairly easy recovery run in, and a slow jog/hike/trailwork home in the heat and smog to avoid overcooking the Bulletdog after her initial swim.

Cycling race 58:00 [5]
ahr:176 max:187

Smoother ride than lap 1, clean with more sensible HR.
Managed to avoid 2 big crashes right in front of me without stopping.
A fun weekend with a great team.
We had lap times ranging from 45-90 minutes, but got in 24 laps. 18/127- not bad for a "fun" team.
Note- LD and Bash both laid down 1hr laps on their best runs!

Cycling warm up/down 1:00:00 [1]

Asst'd warmups and cooldowns during the weekend. Very sociable crowd, with lots of our friends from AP.

24 Hrs of Summer Solstice or Quest for a Cure

Cycling race 57:00 [5]
ahr:181 max:190

Summer Solstice 24hr relay with Bash, Sid, Crooksie, 'Goose & LD, V-max, Logan, Knobless
This year's course was easier than past years for my recumbent, and a PB for me.
Vmax and Logan put in scorching 1st laps- fastest was 45 min. The 'Goose was flying too.
This was the first lap I did in the afternoon. HR was high- a mix of adrenaline and starting on a steady climb. Hit some heavy traffic in the longest singletrack, and had to walk a small hill when they crashed in front of me. Also got a slow flat, and I *just* got to the finish with 10PSI in the rear tire.

Cycling race 1:01:00 [4] +277m
ahr:174 max:185

Lap 2 at night. Felt fast, but easier than the first one.
Hard to see at times in all the dust.

Running (Commute) 25:00 [2]

With Bulletdog on a nice cool morning.

Cycling (Commute) 25:00 [2]

Ride home

Cycling 2:15:00 [3]

Albion Hills Wed. gang with Bash, Crash, El Jefe, LD, Crooksie and Stan the 'bent man.
24hr Course looks pretty straightforward, and less climbing or technical than past years. I'm trying a thin front tire with light tread.
Also my commute with Bulletdog.

Running (Commute) 35:00 [1]

2-dog jog home. T-dog had a good swim and some great dog angels in deep grass, even if she doesn't keep up a fast pace anymore.

Tuesday Jun 19, 2007 #

Running (Commute +) 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Commute, plus some much needed enthusiastic whacking at the thick grass, nettles and thistles on the trail with my manual weed-whacker, which is harder than the running!

Monday Jun 18, 2007 #

Cycling (Co) 50:00 [2]

Recovery commute with the Bulletdog.

Sunday Jun 17, 2007 #

Orienteering race 1:42:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks CP Green

Navstock Long Course- Horseshoe.
This went much better than yesterday, as long courses usually do for me. No big errors- 4th in my category.

Saturday Jun 16, 2007 #

Orienteering race (Sprint) 22:00 [4]
shoes: Icebugs 2

An easier sprint, went OK but one small (I thought) error put me in the bottom 1/3.

Orienteering 1:22:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs 2

Middle Distance at Navstock.
Just couldn't get my nav in gear here, and had an abyssmal race. 3 huge errors, but the rest went OK. Finished way down the list.

Orienteering 1:21:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks CP Green

Navstock Night-O. Did this with 3Pin to practice for our Rogaine. We also did as much as we could bushwhacking and avoiding trails for practice. Went down like a ton of bricks when I tried to shin-split a log, but had a fun time.
3Pin and I do pretty well together.

Note

OK, the Albion Hills biking video is up on Youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGo5eeb0OBI

I can burn the higher res version on a CD if anyone wants it.

Cycling (Commute +) 1:00:00 [2]

Ride to work with Bulletdog, then back to the O-training session in Palgrave, then to Albion Hills afterwards.

Orienteering (Memory Exercise) 50:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Bash set up a good O-course in Palgrave. The idea was O-golf, where par is 3 glances at your map. The first 8 controls were easier for the families that came.
Since I know the trails so well, I was able to do most of them in 1 or 2 glances, but did have to work at memorizing exactly where. I ran into 'Goose, and saw him head off into the wild blue yonder.
We had about 15 people turn out.

Ran it at an easy pace due to the smog day.

Cycling (Night Ride) 1:00:00 [3]

Met up with Crash, Guitarman, 'Goose, Bash and Alan at Albion for a practice night ride. I'm not sure if it was the smog, a tough day at work, yesterday's 3 rides or just my bedtime, but my legs were pooched and I seemed to forget how to ride. Parts felt like a 5 trying to catch the fabulous Crash and the flying Goose.
I managed to lose my great Crank Bros. multitool somewhere out there, and just didn't care enough to go back and find it. AP-ers, think of it as a prize out there.

Cycling 2:20:00 [3]

Biking to Albion with Bash, around the trails with the gang, back with Crash where we threw in some quick zone 5 intervals, then off to work. Got some more video footage too!

Cycling (Commute) 20:00 [2]

Ride home- quicker with no dogs (They can't take the heat).

Cycling (Commute) 50:00 [3]

Commute with the Bulletdog.

Paddlng 1:10:00 [3]

Paddling Island Lake with Bash.
We did a series of intervals too. Interestingly, according to Bash's GPS, 7.5-8kph we can hold for hours, but an interval at 90% is just over 9kph, in our fastest canoe.

Sunday Jun 10, 2007 #

Strength 40:00 [2]

Managed to squeeze in a small workout on Bill's gym and some Link exercises while visiting Bash's family.

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

Headed down to Albion for an evening spin of some of my favourite sections. The legs weren't great after yesterday's hammerfest but the ride went well technically. Missed the gang, but the biking was so-o-o good.
They've added even more bumps and things to the small technical section on the last bit of singletrack.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks CP Green

Long warmup and a cooldown for the 5-peaks.

Running race (5 Peaks) 55:00 [5] 12.1 km (4:33 / km)
ahr:186 max:192 shoes: Brooks CP Green

This time I got seeded nearer to the front, and moved up to run with a couple of guys who set a good pace. I ran my HRM pretty much, between 180-192.Chris, a road runner, was doing fine until he faceplanted, and Bill and I ran together.
Finished 8/56 in my age group, 38 overall.
Laszlo won overall in 45 minutes!

Note

Bash decided I was the only guy in spandex shorts in the quick group and looked like a doofus, so we stopped at Running Free to get me some *real* running shorts. I like my Brooks CPII shoes so much I got a second pair too, before they change them.

Running (Commute) 25:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Run in with the Bulletdog. Worked on a bit of technique from an article Bash sent me for "aging" athletes.

Wednesday Jun 6, 2007 #

Cycling 1:40:00 [3]

Biking to Albion and around with Bash, Suze, EH and 'Goose (Angus assures me his nicknames are Goose and Angry, and the latter doesn't suit him). A social stop-and-go ride, and we got some more helmetcam footage.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [1]

2-dog jog home. Nice to still have light at 9PM. We followed what looked like a very fast bobbing white dog across a field but it was a deer's tail as he ran along the trail in front of us.

Tuesday Jun 5, 2007 #

Running (Commute) 35:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Fairly brisk trot to work with Bulletdog. Just missed getting drenched. Also includes warmup/cooldown for trip home.

Running (Commute +) 30:00 [5]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Speed intervals on the way home.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1.

Paddlng 2:00:00 [2]

Bash and I canoed to the houseboat, then got the kayaks out for a cruise down Great Slave Lake to see the ice that departed the bay only last week. World-class paddle, but we were well aware that the water is about 1 degree C and we didn't have wetsuits.
Also more running errands, etc.
Life on the houseboat community is very interesting, as you see the commuters paddle by with their dogs, propane tanks, etc.

Saturday Jun 2, 2007 #

Paddlng 1:20:00 [2]

Lots of little paddle runs- commuting from the house to houseboat, back to let out the dog, back to Talia's 1st birthday party, then shuttling guests back and forth in the Grumman limo, etc.

Friday Jun 1, 2007 #

Paddlng 50:00 [2]

In Yellowknife visiting my bro and young niece on their houseboat. This was the commute with Bash, plus a kayak around their houseboat neighborhood of Joliffe Island.
