Running (Commute +) 31:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Solid run in with the big boy, with some extras.

Running 34:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Solid run back with extra hills- and it's snowing!

Monday Jan 30, 2017 #

Running 1:02:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Commute with AD. There's a touch of snow over the ice, and some fat bikes were out. Steep parts still skating rink hidden under the snow.

Sunday Jan 29, 2017 #

Strength 30:00 [2]

Lumberjack and part of workout 1 with rehab.
2 PM

XC Skiing 1:32:56 [3] 20.75 km (13.4 kph) +324m

Highlands.
I started undrewaxed, but fixed it up on the glacier and had a surprisingly good ski. Lots of grip and fast glide in slighty icy tracks. More poling than striding.

I passed skate skiiers as I think their track was slower. I finished the full loop sooner than expected so did a second up top. Well worth the drive.

Good on highlands for such nice grooming in so-so snow.

Running 2:05:39 [3] 17.17 km (7:19 / km) +649m 6:09 / km
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Hockley run with Adventuredog. Studded shoes and poles were perfect. Trail was smooth and even where it was well used, which included the side trails. I headed North but turned around on the last field before Dunby road as it was lumpy and crusty. No open glare ice, but there were bits under a few cm of snow.

Legs felt really good- I ran every hill, and threw in an extra climb to the lookout as I still had lots of gas in the tank. I think all the HTFU commutes help. AD was indefatigable of course, and even had a nice play session with a big beast of a pooch that looked like Brody's blonde brother.

Running 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Rainy and slushy run in wifh the big boy, but we got out early and did some extra hills on the way home in daylight with no rain.
Some ice, some hardpack, some tough slogging.

Strength 30:00 [2]

Peter Hrkal's injury prevention and some lumberjack work.

Wednesday Jan 25, 2017 #

Strength 50:00 [1]

My neck's a mess, so only a very easy workout with mostly lower body stuff and a bit of lumberjack work.

Running 40:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Solid run in with Adventuredog. Snow's softened up a bit more, and there's more ice. Bah.

Running 29:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Rain, ice, slush and dark. Still beats driving.

Tuesday Jan 24, 2017 #

Running 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Another run in on hard snow and ice with the big guy.

Monday Jan 23, 2017 #

Running 1:05:00 [2]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Commute with AD in the drizzle. Conditions much like SSR- ice patches but mostly wet snow, soft in spots. Ugh.

Note- left hamstring thing very tight after SSR.

Hiking 1:30:00 [1]
shoes: Saucony Razor

Out picking up controls with Bash and the Beasts. Tiny and Teeny Tiny joined us for about 1.5 controls.

Snowshoeing race 2:58:24 [4] 17.25 km (10:21 / km) +577m 8:52 / km
shoes: Saucony Razor

Snowshoe raid with Hingo who came out of AR retirement for this.

We started up the escarpment climb wearing spikes, and using carbon poles, with snowshoes on our backs. The combo was perfect- the climb felt easy. We ran to the aid station and dropped the poles there. After a short road run we switched to snowshoes probably too early, as there was a solid path to the control South of the road and lots of mud. Switching to snowshoes took longer than expected, but we were glad to have them on the SE controls.
Nav was right on, (the research trip helped a lot) but Hingo realized we didn't have the speed to execute our plan and we switched to plan B, dropping 225 points in the SW.

We put on the tow and covered trail well, but we missed our planned cut-off for the high pointers in the NW as Hingo realized we'd be late, so we hoofed it back to the aid station via controls on flatter routes. We'd been running with Hammer/Tarno, but they went for the bigger controls. (Hingo was right.)

Snowshoes off again and picked up the poles, but Hingo's spikes had frozen up so it was a slow change-over. In hindsight, it may have been better to stick to spikes given the time for change-over.
Poles, tow and spikes made for a fast run back and a bomber descent to the finish with just under 2 min to spare.

Our modest plan B didn't have a ton of points, but thanks to lots of top teams being overtime, some waaay over, we made the podium and overall top 10. Hingo was solid on the big-picture strategy, I did the nav, and we did our plan to the best of our ability. Enjoyed racing with him again.

Looking back after we could have gotten 100 more points with a different route choice, but that wouldn't have changed our standings.

Running 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Another slushy run in with Bazingadog.

Wednesday Jan 18, 2017 #

Strength 50:00 [2]

Easy workout 2 + rehab. I had a sore neck since some tricky work yesterday.

Running (Microspikes) 1:08:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Razor

Too nasty out for studded shoes, so on with the Kahtoolas. Didn't do much extra beyond the normal commute in the grey drizzle and ice with AD.

The rain let up for the late run home at least, and all the ice fell off the branches.

Running 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Run in with BZdog in rain on crusty ice. Much slipperier for the return- running on hard lumpy ice in the rain by headlamp- lovely.
At least the big boy was amused sniffing things that are thawing out under the snow.

Orienteering race 53:14 intensity: (16:06 @3) + (26:50 @4) + (10:18 @5) 7.61 km (7:00 / km) +69m 6:42 / km
ahr:171 max:209 shoes: Saucony Razor

TOC O-cup Claireville.
Icy conditions on trails but not much snow in the bush.
I did some extra distance in the first box as I thought the river crossing was forbidden, but came out in 3rd place behind Hans and Andre.
I was with them to the second box, but decided to do my own thing, and promptly wasted 6 minutes not finding b and having to run to a farther control and back, but at least it was *my* error, not due to following a crowd.

The rest went fine, and I enjoyed navigating myself at a speed where I can read the map.
I did give my bad hamstring a painful yank on a misstep.
Decent course, good venue.
Nice brewpub lunch after.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1] 1.98 km (7:34 / km) +29m 7:03 / km

Cycling 1:10:00 [3]

Albion Hills Fat Bike Festival.
Bash and I tried the rental fat bikes for a bit of tootling around. The real fat bikes ride the breakable crust off-trail that stymied my 'bent, but the trails were mostly hardpacked.

I switched to my 'bent. I hadn't wanted to ask if I could do the race as I had no idea how I'd compare to the fat bikes, or whether I'd be allowed. The RD let me chase after the mid-pack riders on the 20K race once the hardcore riders had done lap 1 and the pack spread out. I was surprised to be passing them fairly easily on the doubletrack. I managed to hold my own on the singletrack sections, but on 2 corners I had to take a wider line and got stuck in soft snow, so I had to get off and push for a few seconds. One guy passed me there, and another passed me in a softer section, but on the whole I'd say I would have had no problem doing the 20k race in these conditions. Things may have been different if I hit a traffic jam at the first single track, but it seems the fat bike riders are content to chug along sanely and I'd be fine.

Next I got to demo an all-carbon fatty, which was very nice. It cruised the trails very easily. I got it bogged down off-trail, but when I got off I was up to my knees in crusty swamp, so that's fair enough.

Fun day out! Didn't really keep track of the time.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Rehab, light workout 1, lumberjack.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Ride around Palgrave E and W with Adventuredog. Pretty tough ride at first, but the doubletrack frozen snowshoe tracks were not bad at all on the plus tires. Some spots were a grind, others felt like hard dirt. A few glare ice bits.

Thursday Jan 12, 2017 #

Snowshoeing 1:04:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Razor

Another sloshy run in. At least the big boy likes it.
Sloppy on the way home too but there's still snow.

Wednesday Jan 11, 2017 #

Strength 45:00 [2]

Link workout and some lumberjack- cut a bit short as we had a power outage from 1AM to 10AM.

Snowshoeing 32:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Razor

Crunchy run on the frozen, rain-soaked snow.

Snowshoeing 32:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Razor

Slog home in soft snow at night with AD. Beat the rain though.

Tuesday Jan 10, 2017 #

XC Skiing 1:10:00 [3]

Just enough fresh pow for a decent ski to work this morning, then quite a good ski just as the snow turned to ice pellets but before the rain and wind on the way home. The big guy was running well.

Conditions turned evil shortly after I got home.

Sunday Jan 8, 2017 #

XC Skiing 1:20:00 [3]

Sunset ski at Scenic Caves. Brilliant blue sky after waiting out some heavy snowsqualls that left the trees encased in snow. Spectacular!

11 AM

Running 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Razor

4-dog hike/run with Storm, Browner and Bash. The big guy had me running back and forth between the off-leash dogs and the humans. All the dogs were excellent, except when AD and Scout took off for a brief Venison Quest.
Browner got to try the big guy on his skijoring setup in the last km or so, when he had settled in.

Saturday Jan 7, 2017 #

Running 30:00 [3]

A few outings with Storm and all 4 beasts. 2 dogs on skijoring harnesses, one on leash and AD frolicking ahead inciting chaos.
They were fine for a few of the runs, but terrible when Browner tried skis.
10 AM

Snowshoeing 3:00:38 [3] 11.68 km (15:28 / km) +513m 12:41 / km
shoes: Saucony Razor

Out exploring nearly every possible climb in Loree foresf with Storm. We had a few nav issues on one control in the West side, but otherwise a great outing on a brisk bluebird day.

Cycling 34:00 [3]

Burly ride in with the big boy at -10c.

Palgrave East was very plus-tire friendly, but in parts of Palgrave West where there weren't frozen snowshoe tracks I was breaking through the crust and struggling along. Did a bit of hike-a-bike in some spots.
Bazingadog and I both agreed it was better than driving.

Cycling 35:00 [3]

Another hard-working ride home. Less wind but also dark. The bike really grips on the frozen snowshoe and fatty tracks, but flounders in the breakable crust. Fun ride and solid workout!

Strength (Core) 20:00 [3]

Caron's core class.

Yoga 55:00 [1]

Hard, harder, hardest class. My left hamstring has the flexibility of an ice sculpture.

Wednesday Jan 4, 2017 #

Note

Bah- MD appts and howling winds = drive to work.

Tuesday Jan 3, 2017 #

Running 33:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Soggy foggy sloggy run in with the big dog in the rain.

Snowshoes would be better for Palgrave West, but spikes were probably optimum for Palgrave East.

Running 34:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Slushy run home in the dark and pouring rain with the big guy. Hard work! Still snow on the trails, but some post-holing into slush.
Feet stayed dry!

Monday Jan 2, 2017 #

11 AM

XC Skiing 1:31:56 [3] 12.66 km (8.3 kph) +227m

Nice ski at Hockleycrest in bluebird conditions - short window after the ice fog burned off, and before it all melted to glop.

Sunday Jan 1, 2017 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crossover GTX

Spike run with the mighty Bazingadog, Hammer, Steve and Trav. Icy conditions but all went well. Great party after - Thanks TravaloneyRox!
