Strength 45:00 [2]

Workout 3- a bit short due to office stuff.

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Reasonably good skiing, but the poles were bouncing off the concrete-hard ice. Had to de-ski and walk some tricky bits.
Short ski as we had an office technical minor disaster and I went in early.
Cautious night time ski home with a hike detour around the death-luge section. Lost a traction device there somewhere.

Running 1:05:00 [2]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Tricky run with the big boy. I tested my spiked shoes at our place and they were OK, but not enough snow to ski, just fluff on ice.
Tricky running as the snow packed up the treads and the spikes would slip.
We tried the rollercoaster route back, but ended up bushwhacking a lot.

Tomorrow I’ll listen to Bash and take snowshoes.

Monday Jan 29, 2018 #

Running 58:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Run to work with AD on trails that looked like a Zamboni groomed them.
Back in a light covering of snow, which clogged my treads and made things even more dicey as the spikes would slip.

Saturday Jan 27, 2018 #

Hiking 30:00 [0]

Rehab and stretching.

Friday Jan 26, 2018 #

Hiking 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Let the dogs navigate for a bushwhack-fest on the hard crust behind Noxon.

Wednesday Jan 24, 2018 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Easy workout 2, rehab and some lumberjack work.

Running 55:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Crusty and lumpy in Palgrave West, Palgrave East was glass-smooth ice with a skiff of powder over it. The big guy was sliding around and even my carbide spikes were barely adequate.

Running 30:00 [2]

Icy run home by headlamp.

Tuesday Jan 23, 2018 #

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Icy, slushy run with a slack-leash Bazingadog. Retrieved my van.

Monday Jan 22, 2018 #

Running 32:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Icy and slushy run home in dumping rain. Left the van at work as our road is undriveable even with AWD and good ice/snow tires.

Cycling 1:15:00 [3]

Broke trail over to the main doubletrack, then surprisingly good riding over to Palgrave East and through the South singletrack. The fatties packed it down well, and the icy bits actually were fairly soft and OK.

Some sunny sections North of the pond were muck and glare ice so I bailed to the main trails.

All going to slop tomorrow.

Strength 40:00 [2]

Easy workout 1 and rehab.

Saturday Jan 20, 2018 #

Snowshoeing 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Razor

Easy run in Scenic Caves with Bash. There was more snow on the trails than we thought, and skate would have been OK.
Eyes felt OK, but no contact lenses. Back to ABC for errands.

Wednesday Jan 17, 2018 #

Strength 45:00 [2]

Most of workout 3 + lots of rehab.

XC Skiing 1:27:00 [3]

Bluebird day with sparking powder- just jaw-dropping day for an extended commute with AD. Still tricky with ice under light pow.
Put a few scratches on my skis on the night ski home- that’s the last of the skiing here until we get more base. The fat bikes seem to be doing better right now.

Tuesday Jan 16, 2018 #

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [2]

Commute with the big boy. Light powder on an icy base.

Monday Jan 15, 2018 #

Running 57:00 [2]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Easy run with AD on frozen lumpy trails. Almost enough snow to ski.
Had to switch batteries on the blaster on the way home, which was a bi cold on the fingers.

Sunday Jan 14, 2018 #

Hiking 1:00:00 [0]

Hike with the hounds, exploring trails in the new Advanced Base Camp neighbourhood.

Snowshoe Raid with Hammer.
Flash freeze and snow over a ton of rain made for dicey conditons, and -15c meant frozen hydration hoses and cold fingers at times.

Hammer was in fine form both in speed and skill, and we ended up breaking trail for a fair bit off the start, with Hammer diving through the thickest bush sometimes in luge postition, sometimes in skeleton mode. We were with Storm Beowulf up to the matrix. In the second half we ended up breaking way more crusty trail than expected, and iced up the snowshoes a bit which made for uneven running. Even where we followed a few tracks the uneven breakable crust made for hard going.
Hammer’s nav was right on but for one CP with tracks all over the place which cost us a few min and meant we had to drop CP50.
We had a dicey log river crossing in the South end which cost us a few more minutes, especially when my pants got stuck on a broken branch.
We were a bit overtime on the final road run.

You can see that Hammer left it all out there.

Pleased to see that we were second overall, behind Storm Beowulf, with the most points minus our penalty. Great to race with the Hammer again.

Nice to see Bash and Browner take the masters female, and second female overall I think.

Strength 45:00 [2]

Rehab and most of workout 2

Snowshoeing 29:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Razor

Solid run in with AD- breaking trail for a fair bit. Soggy run back in the freezing rain. Razors were dicey on shiny slick sidewalk, but better than no ice grip.

Tuesday Jan 9, 2018 #

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [2]

Got another ski commute in before tomorrow’s rain with Brody McSniffalot.

Monday Jan 8, 2018 #

XC Skiing 1:05:00 [2]

Commute with AD.
Breaking trail in fairly light snow to work, skis bricking up a bit on the way home so a slog for the last half or so.

Sunday Jan 7, 2018 #

Snowshoeing 1:22:00 intensity: (52:00 @1) + (30:00 @3)

Snowshoe in Palgrave with the C3 gang and the dogs.
The big guy had me doing hill sprints for a while, then settled in.
9 AM

Cycling 1:52:57 [3] 17.34 km (9.2 kph) +291m

Albion hills with a big gang.
Storm and DD_11 rented fatties, and I was on Plus tires on my ‘Bent.

We did 3 laps of all the fatbike trails, then back to the chalet parking lot then back to find the ladies and do another loop with Funderstorm, Bash, Browner and Tracy.

Some hard grinds up snowy hills. The ‘bent managed to climb everything but one nasty slope, but floundered when we tried to go off the packed trails more than the fatties did.

Ski helmet and goggles were perfect, but -15 is about the limit for my boots.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 1 + rehab.
12 PM

XC Skiing 1:53:35 [3] 13.43 km (7.1 kph) +176m

Extreme cold warning, so of course I headed out for a ski. Local conditions were decent, but there wasn’t much glide. Bluebird day with brilliant sunshine and not too much wind.

Other than my fingers and thumbs I was nice and warm. No dogs though.

Friday Jan 5, 2018 #

11 AM

Snowshoeing 1:05:05 [3] 5.77 km (11:17 / km) +357m 8:37 / km
shoes: Saucony Razor

Tough bushwhack run over hill and dale, inlcuding some spots only good in winter.

Brisk -22, but I was warm except for my toes. I think the snowshoe harness restricts circulation.

Thursday Jan 4, 2018 #

XC Skiing 31:00 [3]

Nice ski in with AD, but we got a lift home in the gusty winds.

Wednesday Jan 3, 2018 #

Strength 50:00 [2]

Workout 3 and rehab.

XC Skiing 50:00 [3]

Solid ski to work with the big guy. After a day of spudding yesterday he was raring to go.

XC Skiing 30:00 [3]

Nice late night ski home.

Tuesday Jan 2, 2018 #

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [2]

Excellent ski commute with AD. About half the route has crisp tracks that have consolidated really nicely.

Monday Jan 1, 2018 #

10 AM

Running 1:00:00 [3] 9.32 km (6:26 / km) +204m 5:48 / km

WOH run with Trav, Rox, Logan and Brody on his harness. Some quick sections early on with a motivated Bazingadog. Weather was not as cold as forecast, so we could have gone the long route.
Great hospitality afterwards for man and beast at the Hottage party. Thanks Trav and Baloney once again!
