Running (Lumberjack) 1:00:00 [3]

Spent a couple of hours heaving and toboggan-hauling some of the several tonnes of firewood the guys cut last week. I’m moving the dead maple first, as the white ash will need 2 seasons to dry.

Also got the ‘bent summer-ready for Arizona and did some test rides in deep wet snow.

Running 2:24:39 intensity: (1:58 @1) + (44:52 @2) + (59:29 @3) + (36:09 @4) + (2:11 @5) 20.05 km (7:13 / km) +660m 6:12 / km
ahr:156 max:186 shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Pretty River with Tarno. We did extra snowmobile doubletrack. Hilly, and a tough slog in wet snow. Woods looked beautiful though.
I used Tarno’s gpx file as mine missed the first bit.

Friday Mar 29, 2019 #

Running 2:20:00 [2]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Pretty River with Bash, MsGally and Dee, and the hounds.

Wednesday Mar 27, 2019 #

Strength 50:00 [2]

Workout 2 plus rehab.

Running 1:00:00 [3] 7.5 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: Topo Ultraventure Blue

Not too enthusiastic about a long run in these conditions.
I used my new Ultraventures. Half the run was bare ground or mud, and the Ultraventures felt great! Roomy, love the fit and moderate rise with near-hoka padding, and good tread. Side of the toe box is a bit more reinforced too.
Great replacement for my Calderas, which I ran to death.

Half the commute is death-ice, and I put on Kahtoolas for that. Every shoe feels heavy and sluggish with these on, but the traction was appreciated.
Careful night run home.

Running 58:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Another shiny glacial commute with the big boy. I had to help him on the steeper bits. Maybe bigger spikes tomorrow.

Cautious trot home.

Monday Mar 25, 2019 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

2-dog run on gleaming glacial trails. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many km of ice on my commute.

Sunday Mar 24, 2019 #

12 PM

Running 3:10:14 [3] 21.85 km (8:42 / km) +711m 7:29 / km
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Bruce North of 9 through Hockleycrest. Slow going with ice, slush and some mud. Used poles, and brought Kahtoolas which I used for a short while. AD had no problem.

Saturday Mar 23, 2019 #

Note

Ski plans cancelled due to an all-nighter family medical emergency. Bash’s mom is doing a bit better now.

Friday Mar 22, 2019 #

Cycling (Trainer) 20:00 [3]

Warm up and some intervals

Strength 45:00 [2]

At TH ABC Gym. Met a former pro skier named Spider doing a hard circuit.

Weekend plans aren’t going to work out.

Thursday Mar 21, 2019 #

Running 28:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Dogless slushy run in. Got some speed intervals too.

Wednesday Mar 20, 2019 #

Strength 1:00:00 [3]

Workout 3 plus rehab and core. No full pull-ups, slightly lighter cable pulls instead.

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Glacier run with AD. Spring weather, shiny ice. Luge, anyone?

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Icy/ slushy night run home

Tuesday Mar 19, 2019 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Run in with the big boy. So icy on the way in I had to put Kahtoolas over my spiked shoes for the bikewhack hill. Mix of slush, soft ice, mud and some bare ground on the way home at 7c.

Monday Mar 18, 2019 #

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Studs-essential commute with AD.

Cycling 40:00 [3]

Even icier on the way home. The steep hike-a-bike hill was a frozen waterfall as expected and even with big screws on my bike boots I took about 10 min to wrestle the bike up. I used it like a walker - push it up hill a bit, lock the brakes, haul myself up one step, get a stable stance, repeat.

Sunday Mar 17, 2019 #

8 AM

Running 3:09:10 [3] 21.74 km (8:42 / km) +484m 7:50 / km
shoes: Saucony Razor

Mono cliffs with BGY, Nick, Glen and some waterloo Rarebit Runners.
Easy pace as a couple of the non-Caledonians didn’t expect much ice and were under-spiked. BGY and I headed back with Glen, and then did a quicker loop when Glen had to head home. Nice lunch at the inn.

Saturday Mar 16, 2019 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Spin on the trainer. No Zwift sweat-fest this time.
11 AM

Running 1:24:10 [3] 9.5 km (8:51 / km) +292m 7:41 / km
shoes: Saucony Razor

2- dog run in Glen Haffy.
Used Kahtoolas as handling the big guy with just my regular spikes might not be enough. It was very icy and the dogs were sliding all over the place. Some spots we broke through thin crusted ice into slush, but still a good run.
Might be ok with spikes and poles without a powerful dog on harness.

Friday Mar 15, 2019 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 2 plus core and rehab.

Thursday Mar 14, 2019 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]

Doing lighter weights now on purpose - because eyes.

Running 52:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Lumpy icy and crusty run with the big boy.

Running 29:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Icy night run home.

Tuesday Mar 12, 2019 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]

Hard crust and ice on the way in, softening up on the return. AD was sliding.

Monday Mar 11, 2019 #

Running 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Commute with the big boy. Mix of post-holing, ice and slush. Right knee’s a bit sore.
More ice and crust on the way home.

Snowshoeing hills 2:54:29 [3] 16.66 km (10:29 / km) +945m 8:10 / km
shoes: Saucony Razor

Woke up to freezing rain, so no Pretty River with Tarno and Hammer,
Once the roads de-iced Timato and I went to run hills at Alpine and Loree in the rain.
Went up Mountain Springs, down LL and up Switchbacks, down River, up Steeps which was a slushy scramble. We were thoroughly soaked by then.
Headed back through Loree, down shortcut and up River, then an extra LL/ Switchback. Solid run.

XC Skiing 1:24:34 [3] 17.28 km (12.3 kph) +317m

Excellent classic ski at Highlands with Timato. We did the full loop. Brilliant sunshine, no wind, and skis were good with ok grip and great glide.

Friday Mar 8, 2019 #

XC Skiing 20:00 [3]

Short classic jaunt after as we still had time.
2 PM

XC ski-Skate 1:06:02 [3] 14.34 km (13.0 kph) +252m

“Keeping up with the Doughtys” skate at Scenic.
Gorgeous day, and we skied the whole network before my knee was done.
Goose was on Classic so he didn’t drop us or have to wait a lot.

Thursday Mar 7, 2019 #

XC Skiing 1:05:00 [3]

Yet another great ski commute with the little guy. We’re getting January in March.

Wednesday Mar 6, 2019 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Spent much of the morning trying to release winter's icy and crusty grip on our deck and gate. Some good ol' crust busting shovelling and ice pounding.

XC Skiing 1:25:00 [3]

Great ski in with the big boy through the Charlevoix trails. Conditions are primo. Quick night ski home.

Monday Mar 4, 2019 #

XC Skiing 1:15:00 [3]

Another gorgeous ski to work with AD- fresh powder, -16c, sunshine and good conditions. Good ski home too, with some extras.

Sunday Mar 3, 2019 #

11 AM

XC Skiing 3:10:30 [3] 20.32 km (6.4 kph) +519m

Kolapore with with Bash. Pics on Bash’s log.

Another wonderful calm day with fluffy snow falling, and good ski conditions.

This time we did the Northwest passage around to the inner Mount Dhaulagiri loop then back to Kingsway and the other Wild Mouse to Paradise Highway- almost 100% different trails than Friday.

Saturday Mar 2, 2019 #

8 AM

Snowshoeing 1:26:15 [3] 9.41 km (9:10 / km) +434m 7:27 / km

Pretty River with Tarno and the dogs. Bash and Jackie went their own route.
Some trail running, where the birthday bazingadog led solidly, some deep trail breaking where he was happy to let the foolish humans break trail. Dogs will sleep well today.

Friday Mar 1, 2019 #

10 AM

XC Skiing 3:44:40 [3] 21.84 km (5.8 kph) +384m

Kolapore with Bash. See Bash’s log for lots of pics.

Perfect windless bluebird day, and good ski conditions with enough snow to cover all the rocks and no icy bits. I helped build and maintain these trails in the early 80s-90s, and they haven’t changed much. Still as good as I remember, and a very well maintained backcountry network.

Some good open hardwood hills, some magical winter wonderland sections through cedars and pines, some smooth doubletrack. I used my old backcountry skis, which were probably overkill in these conditions and tended to ice up if they got wet. Need to glide wax ‘em.

Groomed ski clubs are all very well, but on a day like this, this is what skiing is all about to us. We didn’t repeat a trail, and there are hours more skiing to be had on different trails.

Good to see the old U of T Outing Club cabin, where we spent many a weekend, and I was Cabin Officer for a few years.

One of the besk skis we've had in years. Must come back again in good snow conditions like this.
