Snowshoeing 20:00 [2]

Out breaking through the crusty snow with the dogs. AD ran like a maniac, but the big boy walked in my tracks.

Snowshoeing 1:00:00 [1]

(01:30)
Bonfire and outdoor dinner with the Doughtys. Unfortunately Goose is winged, so they headed home.
We did an easy night snowshoe with our nice neighbours and AD.
Then champagne in the driveway. Happy New Year!

Snowshoeing 1:00:00 [1]

(01:30) Bonfire and dinner with the Doughtys. Sadly Goose is winged right now so they had to head home.

Easy night snowshoeing with our nice neighbours, and champagne in the driveway.
11 AM

XC ski-Skate 47:23 [4] 11.16 km (14.1 kph) +194m

First skate ski of the year at Scenic caves.
Planned an hour. Sadly, finished with enough time to do the run down the zipline and back up- grunt. I should have done Logan’s Run and the fields first.

Gonna have a few sore muscles tomorrow.
9 PM

Snowshoeing 1:00:00 [1]

(01:30)
Easy night snowshoe with our nice neighbours and champagne on the driveway. Earlier we had dinner by the bonfire with the Doughtys, but sadly Goose is winged so they couldn’t join us.

12 PM

XC Skiing 1:15:00 [2] 5.94 km (4.8 kph) +81m

Took both dogs out for a ski. The Bruce trail was well packed, and we tried to ski the new snowshoe trail to Kolapore but open water turned us back after a fun bit of exploration.
Snow up to Brody’s chest in the fields, and Logan had to porpoise. Virtually no sign of our snowshoe tracks from yesterday.

Note- we heard voices when we reached the Bruce, and I managed to chase down a huge group of hikers with 3 big dogs who were cutting across to the ski trails, just West of where all the hikers went last time. When I asked them if they knew where they were, they asked if this was the loop back to Metcalfe Rock.

I explained to them that the ski trails were ski-only, no dogs, no hiking, no snowshoeing, and that a big group of hikers had trashed the ski trails 2 days ago. Judging by the guilty looks, it might have been them, or maybe they saw their friends do this on Strava. At least they turned around.

Tuesday Dec 29, 2020 #

Snowshoeing 1:30:00 [1]

Out with the Gooder clan.
We noticed a new showshoe trail East on the Bruce that looks like it goes to Kolapore Parking lot.
10 AM

XC Skiing 1:07:27 [3] 13.9 km (12.4 kph) +272m

Full loop on classic skis at Highlands. Perfect conditions!
Much quicker than powder-pounding, but I like it all.

Monday Dec 28, 2020 #

Snowshoeing 50:00 [2]

Out with the dogs and Red Gally. Harnessed him up to the big guy and we had a great exploration of new terrain,
1 PM

XC Skiing 2:56:00 [3] 16.67 km (5.7 kph) +332m

Kolapore Middle Loop
Kolapore to John’s Portage to Dhaulagiri, then back carefully on the soggy Jack Rabbit to Marc’s Folly and home. Windy and snowy but excellent.

Trails were in great shape, except for the last few km where they were trampled by hikers and snowshoers. Sadly some of them followed us in from the Bruce via our discreet bushwhack trail. We’ll need to put up some signs.

Sunday Dec 27, 2020 #

Snowshoeing 40:00 [2]

Out with the powder hounds breaking a trail for our nice neighbours to our main route to the Bruce.

Snowshoeing 1:00:00 [1]

Out giving our neighbours a guided tour. Their daughter Darcy wants to run and snowshoe the trails with us!
12 PM

XC Skiing 1:39:56 [3] 9.77 km (5.9 kph) +245m

South end of Kolapore with Bash. Much flatter and more packed in.

Saturday Dec 26, 2020 #

XC Skiing 4:30:00 [3]

So. Much. Snow! Ontario back country ski touring.
Skied from our door to the Kolapore trail, breaking trail in mid-shin deep powder. The main trail loop was broken by a few skiers, but lots hadn’t been skied in weeks.
New Chute and back up to the Cabin, where we broke trail for the whole of Marc’s Folly. We stopped to cut and move a medium tree across the trail.
Paradise hwy up the Wild Mouse. We’d planned to visit Dhaulagiri, but we would have run out of daylight, so up to Kingsway, Kolapore and home before dark.
Another great day, with almost zero repetition of yesterday.

Friday Dec 25, 2020 #

Snowshoeing 3:40:00 [2]

Epic loop from the ABC2 chalet. Pics on Bash’s log,
Deep unbroken snow, and it pounded down the whole time.
We went to the top of Metcalfe rock, past the cabin and across the road to Duncan Crevice and Pinnacle Rock, then back on the blue bruce trail through the valley and in the cedars along the river.
Some massive valleys, big climbs, amazing bridges over the river in snow-choked gullies, waterfalls and cliffs, and some pretty technical stuff for the dogs, including descending a ladder. AD trotted down like a circus performer, but the big guy found it tricky.

Didn’t see a soul, not hiking or in a car. We saw one set of faint tracks.
Not bad right out the door, and we still have all the ski trails to explore next.

Note- Bzdog lost his boot just North of the ladder in the last 2k. Won’t see it until the next big thaw.

Wednesday Dec 23, 2020 #

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Commute.
On my return trip in the dark I saw a bright bike light heading towards me, but did a doubletake as I passed and realized it was Bash dressed up in Christmas finery and lights!

Tuesday Dec 22, 2020 #

Running 55:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Solid run in to work and easier home in the dark after a long busy day.

Sunday Dec 20, 2020 #

Strength 50:00 [2]

Full workout 2 plus rehab.

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Short outing with the dogs
3 PM

Running 9:08 [3] 2.06 km (4:26 / km)

Bash, Timato, MsTiny and Heidi were doing the Egg Nog mile, so I thought I’d run around. 1 warmup lap then 4 quicker.
Sadly no top end any more. Didn’t get past 4min/km, but given no speed work it’s no surprise.

Saturday Dec 19, 2020 #

Cycling 1:35:00 [3]

Good tour of Palgrave East. Oddly bare trails there, while Palgrave West is packed snow and ice.
Rode all the singletrack except Salty Steven. Duffy’s Revenge is still tricky in spots- I cleared one crux that’s always defeated me but there are still 3 or 4 tight bits I’ve never made yet.

Friday Dec 18, 2020 #

Note

Finally!

I had a flu vaccine last Wednesday.
They only had the nasal live virus spray version. They said it can be more immune challenging, but I was just within the age group to receive it.

On Friday I started to get a runny nose. I don’t do the shopping or go indoors anywhere but work (and the pharmacy, where I was the only patient in the area) so I assumed it’s likely a snoot-full of live virus.

Saturday I had a runny nose, sore throat and a dry cough, and felt under the weather. I stayed in and took it easy, trying to sweat it out. I had Monday off as work is quiet during lockdown in Peel Region.
I assumed I’d be ok to work on Tuesday, but Public Health required a Covid test and isolation until negative results are known, even with my only exposure being the vaccine. Cr@p- there goes the office. Earliest I could get a test was Monday 8pm, as things are surging here.

By Monday afternoon I was certainly well enough to work, but going in against doctor and Public Health wasn’t an option.
I had to isolate at home, and didn’t even take the dogs for a run on the trail as I often run into people, including patients...

It took until Friday Morning to get the test results! Negative of course.
Entire week was a write-off, and work will be nuts next week.

Running 1:32:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Great run in Palgrave NE with the boys, including Duffy’s Revenge.

Thursday Dec 17, 2020 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Full workout 2 with rehab, core and some KB.
Also hiked the dogs and biked the Covid Crusher again.

Wednesday Dec 16, 2020 #

Strength 30:00 [2]

2 more loads done- some tough knotty ones needed a lot of sledge and wedge work.

Cycling 30:00 [2]

4 loops of the yard and Covid Crusher trying to fix a suspension/driveline issue with the big tires.

Tuesday Dec 15, 2020 #

Strength 2:00:00 [2]

Workout 3 plus rehab and hauled 3 loads of wood, split and stacked 1.

Monday Dec 14, 2020 #

Snowshoeing 1:30:00 [1]

Out with the beasts again. Cut a bypass around a fallen tree on our connector trail, and tried the West forest option back from the Bruce.
First 100m are thick and thorny, then it’s great open forest.

Sunday Dec 13, 2020 #

Snowshoeing 52:00 [1]

Out with Bash and beasts. The crust is hard on BZdog’s torn nail, and he lost his boot in the meadow just SE of our property. Tons of exploration to do in future...

Saturday Dec 12, 2020 #

Strength (Lumberjack) 45:00 [1]

90 min
FB cut some dead trees for us, and I tobogganed out the logs in the slushy deep snow to the new woodpile.

Friday Dec 11, 2020 #

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [1]

Ski with the hounds from Chalet ABC2.
Forest connector to the Bruce, then West to the fields and back through the meadow connector. In firmer conditions this will be a great dog ski.
AD porpoised along, but the big guy found post-holing to be slow going, and his torn nail bled the whole time. He still loved it.

Thursday Dec 10, 2020 #

Running 58:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Commute

Wednesday Dec 9, 2020 #

Running 45:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Running the beasts in Palgrave West.

Strength 50:00 [2]

Full workout 2, rehab and a little lumberjack work.

Tuesday Dec 8, 2020 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Another challenging ride to start, then pretty good on firm packed singletrack.

Monday Dec 7, 2020 #

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Commute +.
First km of Palgrave West was breakable crust- hard slow going with some hike a bike.
Palgrave East was packed down and fairly easy riding with spikes but I had to detour the construction via singletrack.

Sunday Dec 6, 2020 #

10 AM

XC Skiing 1:26:44 [3] 7.34 km (5.1 kph) +148m

More spectacular skiing, this time starting at Jack Rabbit, down John’s Portage and up Kingsway, where we appropriately met Bruce and Val King, then back to pick up a few coolers of Kolapore Trout for our CSA farm.
Skiing is at winter peak condition, and scenery is also peak winter wonderland.

See Bash’s log for pics!

Saturday Dec 5, 2020 #

Snowshoeing 25:00 [2]

Another stomp with the hounds.

Strength 40:00 [2]

Lots of shovelling! Barb rounded up a posse to clear our deck, and I also managed to locate and excavate our garbage box under the plow ice drift.
10 AM

XC Skiing 1:30:46 [3] 6.68 km (4.4 kph) +119m

Up the meadow to the Bruce, to the trail past Metcalfe and back via Kopapore Church trail. More heavy trail breaking in winter wonderland.

Friday Dec 4, 2020 #

1 PM

Snowshoeing 1:23:00 [2]

Yay, up at Kolapore. Tons of snow. Bash and I toured the property while the poor dogs porpoised and floundered along. Bazingadog luxuriated in many bains-du-neige.
Looks like we can do a nice 2k on the property.

Pics on Bash’s log.
3 PM

XC Skiing 1:54:00 [3] 10.0 km (5.3 kph) +177m

First time for me skiing from the Chalet. Deep, heavy snow, slow going but excellent.
We skied our connector to the Bruce, bushwhacked to the Kolapore trail and broke trail to the Church exit. From there we followed tracks back. XC at its finest!

Made it back just as it got dark.

Thursday Dec 3, 2020 #

XC Skiing 1:10:00 [3]

Nice morning ski with the big boy. He was very reluctant when we turned for home instead of work- lay down in the snow and wasn't budging, before eventually coming along with a heavy sigh.

Dogless Commute in warming snow- might be slushy skiing home.

XC Skiing 35:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (25:00 @3)

Slushy skiing in spots, until I hit the main Palgrave East doubletrack where it’s been bulldozed to dirt! They’re doing some sort of construction, maybe repairing an eroded gully in the trail. Oh well, snow was getting sparse on the tracks anyway.

Wednesday Dec 2, 2020 #

XC Skiing 1:05:00 [3]

Spectacular day for a ski with the boys, then a commute.
Shorter that I'd hoped because of interruptions for texts, phone calls, fallen tree problems, IT family support, but still good.

XC Skiing 32:00 [3]

Night ski home.

Tuesday Dec 1, 2020 #

XC Skiing 1:05:00 [3]

Ski commute! Slow home with sticky skis and lots of branches bent over the trail, but most excellent!
