This was quite a workout. I much preferred the driveway markers to the electric fence posts.

I should have managed my food and drink better (as in, brought some food and/or drink); I was wiped out. Also a few poor route choices, as least if you were dragging a bike and bike trailer around. I got swamped out at one point.

Didn't use my watch on the other ones I set by vehicle.

Note

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN CONTROL PICKUP after Night O....

I recommend bringing a bike. It might be the easiest way to cover ground efficiently.

Orienteering (Bike & Hike) 22:24 intensity: (36 @0) + (20:11 @1) + (1:31 @2) + (6 @3) 1.31 mi (17:06 / mi) +12m 16:38 / mi

Setting two controls with bike and hike.

I should sleep more; I would be less stressed.

Also, my bank seemed to think they should charge me a fee for getting some change for tomorrow. Odd, and the accusatory tone of the teller left me unsettled for some time. :|

Orienteering (Bike & Hike) 1:54:50 intensity: (1:48 @0) + (1:33:06 @1) + (13:36 @2) + (6:15 @3) + (5 @4) *** 8.56 mi (13:24 / mi) +101m 12:56 / mi

Does it count as a spike if you walk right to the spot, but then say, "Here? Really? 100% certain??" and then check around a bit? Sure, why not.

Bike mostly, which is a fun way to get to control sites. Only locked it once, when I knew I was going a long way over to the most challenging (for a setter) site. It will be easier for participants since they can brute force it.

Then tried to get to one, but it was greener than I remembered, so I relocated it. I should have managed my time better in the weeks prior and vetted locations more in advance. New location is a much nicer spot but too damn easy. I should pick my spring venue now and then get it all sorted over the winter, and then be early in the season to avoid getting burned by vegetation.

Hopefully the balance of 24 c can be set tomorrow in ~3.5 hours. I have the advantage of daylight and a truck and a bike.

Thought I should include something mildly speedier, so at 1% grade I did a mile each at these mph:

6
7
8
7
6

Not sure why watch was flaky and omitted ~16 minutes. I corrected it.

Hooray! Mary J. has the reflectors. I didn't see them in the box and was starting to panic, wondering if they fell out during a previous meet, or if I had removed them from the pile as a precaution since no one else had night o...I was ready to rip my garage apart.

Also, the club has quite a pile of equipment now. That gazebo is monstrous. The Escape only has room for two people with the full load.

Hooray for the in laws' farm. I asked if they had some sort of light duty fence posts or stakes, and sure enough, my fil had a dozen electric fence posts lying around the barn, so I can freestand some of the night o flags.
8 PM

Walking 38:19 intensity: (31 @0) + (21:27 @1) + (16:21 @2) 2.2 mi (17:25 / mi) +422m 10:55 / mi
ahr:130 max:147 shoes: Brooks Ghost Red

12% grade. Started at 3 mph, then slowly ramped up the pace until HR hit 70 ish %. Really huffing by the end. Kept bumping the emergency kill switch so the distance is estimated from summing each of the last things I remember seeing. You can see these moments very clearly in the HR trace. :-)

Note

I should make a crude sprint map of East Rockford Middle School, as I'm likely to end up there a half dozen more weekends in my life. Then I could sneak out between games and run a course. They have some meadows, some form line features, a proper boulder or two....
9 PM

Running 44:26 intensity: (30 @0) + (19:00 @1) + (24:56 @2) 4.64 mi (9:35 / mi)
ahr:138 max:149 slept:6.0 shoes: Brooks Ghost Red

1 @ 6 mph to warmup, balance at 6.5 mph. Catching up on Hawaii 5-0s. Good inspiration, because the total % bf on that show is 4.

Forgot to set grade at 1%.

10 PM

Erg rowing 45:19 intensity: (1:23 @0) + (43:56 @1) 0.61 mi (1:13:49 / mi)
ahr:112 max:129

Hopefully a few doubles in the next few days to make up for Friday and Sunday.
