Michigan sweeps solos. Eaton wins again. Mark VT tied my score but finished six minutes earlier for second. I took third, woo woo!

No MRA so the team category was left open.

Track and details when back in Michigan.

~~~~~
I was first again to pick up my map. An interesting layout, it had an odd clump of points in the south. I decided quickly that I could not reasonably expect to get them, so I plotted a sweep minus one of the upper 2/3rds, with a few bail outs. I used 2 mph. (I should probably get more sophisticated since a hill is a huge time suck and you can go fast when you stay high on ridge.)
Michelle Green won the $50 door prize. Woo woo, Michigan already in the money.
Start sounded. Many people tore out of their sub 8:00/mile pace. Not sure why! I went CCW, chasing eventual winner Hail to the Chimp. Minor trail wrong way after 32, but I realized I was on a logging road, not a park road and fixed it quickly.
What I did not fix quickly was a parallel spur. My spidey sense tingled, but I couldn't stop walking, plus there were foot prints. Eventually I got it sorted - I'll have to look at the route. 15 minutes of error?
Then it was smooth sailing again until after leaving 72. I let my guard down, but the features made sense so I was fortunately on the right spur.
I was slightly ahead of pace, so I was encouraged and aimed to do the long out and back to 82. I missed my 82 time mark @ CP 70 by 15 minutes, but decided I could haul if I really needed. It worked out well, even if I had to Stuart Smalley myself up my final big climb towards 50.
I missed my mark for 35 by two minutes, but again decided I could make it work.
Drake White was hot on my heels back to the finish, about 75 m back. I was getting concerned - he often does well, and I have no idea how many he has. I was very glad that he didn't make a push. I would have tried to hold him off, but I was already miserable and spent and it would have been ugly.
Lost to Mark by six minutes, but he's a pretty light fit runner so no shame in that. The overall winner has gone sub 2:40 in the marathon, so that explains why he took off like a gazelle after I saw him make a gear adjustment three hours in.
Looks like a ~13 minute wrong spur error, and Garmin says only 16.5 miles. AP's interpretation sounds cooler.
I have to get better about jumping right on evening exercise when I realize the original family exercise plans have been scrapped. Which is usually done more as an eventual "well I guess not" than formal declaration. Especially if I eat for it ahead of time. At least I think I managed about break even, which is better than say, Fall '13.
Also, I hate packing for races!
Note
If I intend to keep biking on public roads, I should stop looking in other cars as I drive the freeway. Two cars, left lane, 80 mph, one car length gap....both playing on phones.
Around Bird Hills w/ Igor. Fun stuff! IceBugs were a good choice. Much easier drive to pick up the daughter. :)
Tried to make it higher effort since I hit snooze too many times and tonight doesn't look so good for activities.
I can still feel those lunges! No new strength stuff in the last week or two before a race!
Had a higher effort portion near the beginning, but couldn't quite get back there after one of the commercial breaks.
As much as I like watching tv/movies in the dark, there was something to be said for convenient viewing of my hr to keep it a little more on boil.
Stopped by original location of my lbs to get a sport chair wheel looked at - they plan to have a lot of rides out of the new branch near my house which sounds awesome.
I have discomfort where one of my big toes meets the foot. I'm not sure if it's over stress from poor xc ski technique used twice vigorously back to back, or from when I stepped on a hanger in my basement. But I can run on it and bike and row, so not much of a setback for now. Nervous about skiing again, though I did splurge for some glide chemicals for the next outing.
Running 30:41 intensity: (6:54 @1) + (23:47 @2) 3.0 mi (10:14 / mi)
Weight seems stuck. Maybe I've been eating back too many exercise calories, or else it's just the nature of fluctuations.
Miserably lethargic. I should have done this earlier as well. The Bling Ring was a bit slow which didn't help, although they did mention kitten heels.
Biking 1:54:24 [2] 16.69 mi (8.8 mph)
I had one of those days where you have a plan, and mean to get somewhere by say, 12:30, and then just before, you get mixed up and think you need to leave by 12:30, and then by the time you get to A2 you are cursing the city and the parking....(and then cursing yourself repeatedly when you are halfway there and realize no Garmin)
But I made it with not more than two minutes to spare. I was a little confused, but eventually figured out that the "16 mile gravel road ride" was the 20 mile ride, just modified due to conditions. I left last, woo hoo.
Kind of fun to be in a big group of bikes in A2; I do not believe motorists felt the same way!
I made a lucky move and passed half the field turning into the Argo Cascades, and then I saw a single speed cx bike ridden by someone in Wheels in Motion kit, so I had located Paul S. Had a nice ride with him.
Paul saved his big slide. I wiped out spectacularly on Joy Road as I hit ice on our surge to catch the next clump. Paul's friend runs 80 mpw, which piqued my interest, so I was chatting with her as she hit ice and dumped; luckily I didn't run her over, managing to get feet down and having only a brushing contact.
Good hill work in Barton Hills; good bike skills everywhere else. Fun stuff, and I do not begrudge anyone who skipped the drive!
During a regroup on top of a hill. Paul S on the right.
