That happened to my Saab, about 2 years ago when I was on my way to a local O-event at Ward Pound Ridge. Since the water pump and alternator (in addition to power steering) no longer ran, I would drive until the temp gauge went to hot, let it cool down, then get going again.
I got to within 1-1.5 mi of home when it would not start again -- without the alternator, I was running solely on battery, which finally died. A friend swung by to give me a ride home (I did not want to take the time to walk/run), where I got my other car. I drove back up to the Saab, took out all the gear and waited for AAA to come and take it away on a flatbed.
Yeah, glad I had enough power to get it to the shop.
