The great thing about being named "orienteering" is this association with tame and lame activity and hence the ease of getting permits. Unfortunately, that is the only good thing about using this name in the US.

The part that gets annoyingly confusing is that this is the merit badge workbook:

What on here suggests anything like pacing around a field without a map would fulfill the requirements? It sounds a like lot real orienteering, and yet, permanent bearing pace courses appear randomly all around when they would be better served working, according to this page, by setting up a white or yellow course with us, which would be more than happy to accomodate.
