BROC Score O with the family. We got 5 "trolls." We did some running but mostly walking with some bushwhacking. Hazel did a fair bit of navigating. Don't practice orienting every time. It's hard as it isn't as fun.

Clearing the BROC Score O. Started on the far end as I came back from the house after dropping off the family and picking up the dogs.
Made a mistake on the first control but clean after that. Noted some improvements to make to the map as well.

Exploring Downtown Ottawa after sunset. Clear skies and second quarter moon meant it was bright. Temps were low 10F with a good gust of wind. I was worried about being too warm but I was almost perfect. Should have brought my hat though. Had trouble regulating head and face with just a buff.
Lots of neat areas of town. The parliament hill is pretty cool and the Rideau River falls as well. Lots of areas were closed off. I am assuming because of the snow. Kind of a bummer that a significant portion of their public space has to get shut down but there is so much that it wasn't a problem. Also wish I could have skated on the canal but nothing was open yet. Ottawa River was covered in ice except near the dam.
LAchilles was pretty tight and sore but I was taking it pretty easy so I wasn't too concerned. Was just concerned about the volume but it seemed to be ok.

Gatineau Park. First time on XC skis in almost 2 decades. I wasn't sure if I would fit this in but I was definitely glad I did. Very enjoyable time.
I started just after sunset. There was just enough moon shining through the clouds that a headlamp wasn't really needed. Temp was comfortable right about 30F and I was pretty well covered to ensure no problems. Definitely could have been more efficiently dressed
It took me a little over an hour until I started to get some better form. The steady uphill from the start made it harder. I was still struggling on the backcountry downhills and took some falls as well as bailed out more than a few times especially on the very last downhill out of the woods. I do think I would have been more comfortable in the daylight especially on the downhills.
Heard some screeching along one trail. Another skier said he thought he heard something too but thought it was a tree creaking. Sounded like some sort of animal to me.
Spent a fair bit of time (~10min) stopping to look at the map, snack, drink, etc.
