road running 33:10 [3] 3.08 mi (10:46 / mi)

Green Valley, AZ.
Miles: 11:18, 11:01, 10:09
Family of quail ran across the road in front of me, fuzzball babies no bigger than a cottonball. All but one made it up over the curb, the one couldn't quite get up and after running frantically back and forth, turned back into the road. I stopped a car, gently caught the little fuzzball, and deposited it by the bushes into which the family had disappeared.

walking 17:01 [1]

Dusk, gentle hills.
Lots of bats. Saw the great horned owl fly to the top of a tall Italian cypress, where it took up a post to watch for an unwary rabbit or other small critter.

Saw a big (at least 5 foot) Sonoran Gopher Snake crossing the road.

At dusk. Saw lots of feeding bats and heard the Great Horned Owl that hangs out in the bell tower of the Presbyterian Church.

road running 36:13 [3] 3.4 mi (10:39 / mi)

Light rain.
Miles 11:01, 10:31, ??.
(into Oxford. Didn't take GPS watch since it gets condensation inside if I use it in rain. But I know exactly where miles 1 and 2 occur going into town. And actually, mile 1 might be about 100-100 meters long, since I started the watch and run about that far before the "zero" point.)

Friday Apr 17, 2020 #

Note
(rest day)

All-day rain. Got a lot of indoor work done putting up new bookshelves, sorting and cleaning map library, unboxing and shelving books that have been in storage, filled up a box of books to give away.

Thursday Apr 16, 2020 #

trail running 50:40 [3] 4.1 mi (12:21 / mi)

Miami Natural Areas. Pine, east and Reinhart Loops. Was a little concerned about meeting other people on the narrow parts of the trail system, but didn't encounter anybody on the trails. Several cars in the various parking lots, and 3 student-age young people sitting about 10 yards off the trail near the Bonham Rd entrance playing a guitar, but I did not encounter anybody else actually on the trails.

Camp Tuscazoar Centennial Challenge. Should have been able to do this considerably faster, but didn't take water and needed to make a very costly (time, distance, steep climb) return to vehicle after about 3 hours. Very physical course. Fun.

River had finally gotten low enough to reach all controls, although the bottomlands were pretty muddy in places. There was one control where my intended route didn't work because of high water (I won't give it away), but the control itself was accessible.

Very open forest, a few patches of multiflora rose, but they generally were not too difficult to avoid.

Biggest complaint - Some of the controls are not very accurately marked on the map; probably spent a total of 20-30 minutes circling marked locations trying to find the plaque - it was a bit frustrating when they were marked on the opposite side of a trail, building, campsite, or other object.

I didn't take a compass; it might have been helpful in the central part of camp with the dense maze of intersecting trails and rides.

Very busy park, but a lot of room to spread out. Lots of fresh tracks of hikers, horses and bikes. Saw a few mountain bikers and a couple trail runners.
