Henry Coe Park, Gilroy, CA. Checking control sites and putting out SI units for US Rogaine Champs. Very impressed with accuracy of vegetation and topography on this map. If you think that the R in "rogaine" means rugged, this will be an event for you. Suggested last minute training: Do 3 or 4 consecutive Rim-to-rim at the Grand Canyon. That should be at least a start. After breakfast, do some hill repeats. Truly this will be a fun event but it will be physical. Every control I checked was dead on. And I love the new red white and blue reflectors!

Red Course set by Steve Barnhart at Germantown Metropark. Fun in the hills, except for the stinging nettles in the flood plain and those seemed to be far less potent this year than in previous ones.

walking 1:08:00 [1] 4.0 km (17:00 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

shadowing a junior (Ethan) on yellow course. We walked 90%+ of the course, but did a pretty quick run on the final leg. I also did a short run up a hill to chase down the source of some repeated whistle blowing, and give a stern lecture to a group of JROTC cadets, who definitely did not have a need to be blowing!

trail running 1:02:33 [3] 6.4 mi (9:46 / mi)
weight:162lbs shoes: Icebugs

Miami Natural Areas. It had rained a little bit earlier in the day, so I figured the trail would be wet and icebugs a good idea. That turned out to be a good idea. I did manage to trip on a root that stopped me dead and sent me in a full-length sprawl on the trail. Muddy plams and knees, but no real damage.

Just before I started into a final 2.5 mile loop, I thought I heard distant thunder, but decided it was probably a jet. Nothing more, so I started out on the loop. About 2 minutes before the halfway mark, I heard thunder again, closer this time, and no question what it was, but I figured there wasn't much point in turning around at that far into the loop. 4 minutes later, and not far past the halfway point, the forest lit up. Ker-aaaccck! Dang that was close. Well, nothing to do but keep running. A couple minutes later, the rain began, light at first but quickly becoming a drenching downpour that continued for the duration.

About the time I finally got back to the car, it began letting up. Oh well, good training. At least the rain had washed the mud off my palms and knees, so I only had to deal with wet car, not a muddy one!

Note
slept:0.0 weight:161lbs (sick)

Chiggers suck! I have encountered chiggers before, but never anything even close to this. Ankles are covered with bites on top of bites, plus up my legs, a couple up my a$$, and even a bloody vampire chigger that got me on the neck. The next time I go back to Cumberland Falls, I will be literally bathed in powdered sulphur or deet or both. Didn't get any sleep last night in spite of antihistamines and hydrocortizone creme, so I decided to blow off the Whitetail Trail Run today. The thought did occur that it would take my mind off the bites for a few hours, but I didn't want to drive that far on no sleep.

Catching up on some map drafting and other computer stuff today.
