Christmas bird count INMO (Indiana - Michaela / Oldenburg). 8 bald eagles, rough legged hawk, northern harriers were among highlights. Occasional light snow, temperatures around 15F with wind chills below zero.

Western Hamilton County - Christmas bird count. Cold rain most of the day, ending with a few light snow flurries. Birding was slow, although we saw a couple eagles, a kestrel, savannah sparrows, and a few other uncommon species. Non-avian highlights included a large and very slow moving snapping turtle in the chilly Great Miami River, and a close up (less than 10m) encounter with a coyote, before he noticed me and ran the other way.

Updating a new segment of paved bike path, and changed road and parking lot configuration at the main park entrance. I wonder what traffic engineer thought it would be a good idea to put the entrance / fee booth where the 3rd stopped vehicle in line will sit astride the bike path crossing, and about the 7th or so (on busy days) will be stopped midway up the hill toward a blind crest, just waiting to get rear-ended by somebody who comes over too quickly. (At least we use a different entrance for the New Year's event).

Ran the 30 control score course that I had set for the kids on Monday, definitively proving that it could be swept in under an hour, with route choices that did not cut across any private property.

Not sure what hit me, but Tuesday afternoon began with muscle soreness, deep fatigue, mild headache and mild stomach upset. Slept most of the next 24 hours, feeling mostly better by late Wed, and did a little very light garden work Wed afternoon. By Thurs morning, felt pretty normal and decided to go for a run.

Note

Union County O Practice. Light drizzle. Kids ran a 30 control urban score course (trivia questions about each location), ending at Pizza King where we had an end-of-semester pizza party. Only 14 present - 11middle school and 3 high school (many of the high school students had put their priority on studying did exams). 6th and 7th graders were told to find controls 1-20; 8th and above were expected to try for all 30.

13 kids present.

3 HS students hung 13 controls (4-5 each).
everyone else did a short course, finding 4-7 controls.
Those who quickly completed one course (and the course setters) did a second course.
We then did a team competition control pickup.
