It has been a very slow start to summer in the alpine due to a persistent winter snowpack. While paddling yesterday I thought the south aspects finally looked clear enough (and the aerial photos looked promising as well). We (Russ and Vikki) decided on a Mt English summit trip from the south side. There is no trail - just a rough trail to the lake and then a general route. I've only been here once about ten years ago and since then the cutblock had been extended further up the hill (road was in good condition). We followed a skid road then bushwhacked a bit uphill until we found the trail (the turn off in the block is hard to see). The fire last summer extended into the alpine here and we walked through several sections of forest with blackened trees and soil. I found the traverse above the lake fine on the way there - took the alternate route on the way back. Very little snow to deal with and the meadows were very green (a week or two before the flowers pop though glacier lilies were out in spots). The steep rock gully was made easier by the snow (which was soft enough to kick steps). Another week and it would be gone I think... the ridge itself is slower travel with a couple steeper boulder sections. Russ was not feeling great so this section was fairly slow. The top is a great vantage point for lots of peaks and glaciers. No issues on the route down other than the building heat. Great to be back in the alpine...
