Ras Y Moelwyn British Champs -- 5th

Looking forward to it as all completely new hills for me and looked like a pretty competitive field. Long run out and gradual climb for a while before it got a bit steeper and felt like I paced it well in around 10th. Only Elkington came flying past me.
Tops were all completely in cloud and leading two got lost and managed to get back to the front by the bottom of the first descent. Losing a lot of time on the climb though. Then after the next descent was in 3rd (Carl and Jack a way off) but feeling pretty bad and lost a lot of time and places on the 4th split to the top of the final hill.

In about 8th at the top moved quickly past Si Bailey and Gaz Hughes. This was a mistake as then Gaz knew the descent line and I followed the next people ahead. Got ahead of a couple more but then Gaz just appeared below and had caught up Elkington in 3rd.
The track run back was horrendous. I was maybe slightly gaining on the two ahead but only got close enough to witness Elkington destroy the sprint finish for 3rd.

One day I will do better than the 4th place I got at English Champs in 2013 in my 3rd ever fell race.

20x400(30s) on the grass track at Holyrood. Mean 75.2

With some iffy calves decided that grass session was the best idea. Decided on pre breakfast as generally been feeling really tired after work and often don't eat too well so stomach isn't great. This solved that.

In lane 6 as still a bit of dew so shallow bend was good.

Ben Lui circuit with Liam.

A nice run out to start then climb up Ben Lui into the coire. In thick clag fairly early on and we were following a path that soon very gradually disappeared as it got steeper and steeper. Knew we were wrong here, then we ended up finding remnants of a track but involved some steep scrambling on wet rocks and grass with some big drops and I was very scared. Eventually got up and the next three munros required some pretty tough fell nav at times but hit it all fine. Then it finally cleared up on the last hill and cracking views all around.

Both feeling tired so a bit of a plod but a cracking day out nonetheless.

WU then Gypsy Glen Race -4th (Midweek races in Scotland evidently more competitive than Inter-Counties)

Obviously expecting to be knackered but with such a nice evening decided to make this my session. Aim was to be tempo effort to the top then push the descent for some turnover then try and push the flat at the end.
Nailed the tempo and feeling pretty cruisey up the hill letting Sasha, Tom and Ali get a long way ahead. Then pushed the downhill well but my guts weren't too happy and so left to crawl to the finish a bit.

UK Intercounties Fell Running (at Flower Scar) -- 3rd

Was keen to run this as I never have and it looks one of the most stacked fell races in Britain with the Mountain and Fell runners both turning up.

Started fast steady to get near the front for the bottleneck and singletrack first climb. Got a nice spot in about 10th and stared at Rhys' arse for the next few minutes feeling pretty good. Then just ground out the long steady climb for the next 12min or so. Dangling by myself 40m behind Eoin and Ewan with a small gap behind.

First descent on the gravel track I got up to Ewan and Eoin and caught up the 2nd pack and so was now in 5th place with a pack of four maybe 30s ahead. A grim wooded section I struggled through then onto a long very runnable descent in the woods and I gapped the group behind a bit.

Then after a climb we hit the open fell and I had the group ahead in my sights as it was rough and downhill so was moving fast. I didn't see the flags but saw them then saw them standing around. I couldn't see any flags but the group behind me shouted so I pretty much turned round and there was so many people!

The front four still had a bit of a lead but now I was with a lot of people. Pushed the amazing descent with a nicely timed steamtrain appearance in the valley. Got into 4th with Max Nicholls and Dan Howarth ahead and then I was just behind Nick Swinburn.

A tough last climb but I got ahead of Nick and ground it out and thankfully no one came past until right at the end when Holdsworth and Carl came past much quicker than me. I then pretty much sprinted to keep up on the flat/uphill road so I could contend.

Descent came and went past Holdsworth quickly and then had to go into overspeed to get past Carl. Actually caught Dan by the bottom and was by his side in the field but legs were spent and so he cruised away.

Results

Very happy and all the cross training of February/March seems to have made me a fairly good uphill runner. Struggled on some of the very runnable descents too. Don't have the leg pace of some of the road specialists like Tim Morgan.

Team did really well with all 4 of us in top 14. Unfortunately just missed out on gold by one point.

Walking -- 4:00:28(not including stops) -- 18.185km -- +413m

Overnight was a lot colder than we were expecting. So despite wearing everything I had I still didn't sleep too well. Next time I might not take my OMM sleeping bag. Not sure how cold it was but we had some nice frozen oranges in the morning.

Day 2 was more an exit day with just one Munro (Carn a'Chlamain) to begin with then a long track walk back to Blair Atholl.

A very nice way to spend a weekend with Laura and made me appreciate the comforts of a warm bed! Despite not being high effort I have got a fair few aches and pains. Shoulders and back are pretty sore from carrying the bag (and occasionally two bags :) ) which was fairly heavy. Also calves are sore from 5k then into climbing and finally got a pretty sore right hamstring not sure why.

Walking -- 6:47:28 (not including stops) -- 28.8km -- +1741

Took the weekend to do some hillwalking with Laura. Got the train to Blair Atholl then walked out and did the Beinn a'Ghlo ridge including the three Munros; Carn Liath, Braigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain and Carn nan Gabhar. Then a steep descent into the valley, a very cold river crossing and round the hill to our lovely accommodation.

Weather was very mixed so we had nice patches of sunshine but also had about 4 or 5 snow/hail flurries which were less enjoyable. Main issue was a fairly strong Northernly wind which was bitterly cold.

Always my favourite road/track race of the year. Of course the year I'm not running fast is the best conditions. Still a bit of wind though of course.

Got destroyed on the start and was going backwards very fast. This made me happy as I knew I was going to have a fun second half. Aerobically the first couple of k felt fine but my legs were maxed out. Then just spent the next 3k moving past people. Except for Waldie who came flying past so just tried to keep with him. When we turned into the wind at ~4k I felt very strong and just cruised past a load more even finding a kick to the finish.

Pretty happy to run 15:35 as I think these are my five fastest k's since mid my calf got screwed in mid February.

Nice to see the other orienteers run well. Especially Carcas breaking the 15min barrier.
