Fantastic race with never-ending support along the way! My goal was a Bill Rowan medal (sub-9h), with the possibility of going below 8:30 if I had a great day.

I started a bit too fast and my legs were already feeling tired on Inchanga (40km). That and Botha's Hill had me at a massive energy low on the way through Hillcrest and Kloof. I got to employ the 5-min lie-down at about 60km which seemed to mostly sort me out. Alex caught me shortly after that and we ran together for some stretches down Fields Hill and through Pinetown. My right hamstring and calf had been tight since the 20km mark and for just about the first time ever, I had some mild issues with cramps on the home stretch. Stopped for a quick stretch every time the cramp threatened which kept it at bay. Felt relatively strong in the final 7km and had a good run in to the finish.

Super-chuffed with the time, given the bad patch I had to push through. It's a loooong way!
