2nd overall to Bushwhacker by 11 minutes. We never got in our groove and even though we chased hard, b-dubs raced smart and earned the win. Happy to see them do so well, and catch up w a bunch of AR friends!
PROLOGUE
find 7 out of 10 CPs hung at 800'. no map. we found the first one very quickly and turned left to attack the rest. stayed out the entire 60min time limit and only found 6. turns out we should have turned right- more CPs that direction. suboptimal.
BIKE (CPs 1-8)
plotted, on bikes, took jeep road instead of singletrack to first CP, had to turn around and bikewhack, then got the rest of the singletrack CPs easily enough although David was fretting about ineffecient route choices. gravel stuff was fine too.
PADDLE (CPs 9-15)
plotted, we could split up for CPs 10-13 which were all on the dammed lake, north of the put-in. we only had our one passport though so we paddled went and got 12 (east side of lake), then up to drop David off for 13, 11, and 10 which were on west side. then Jeff and I paddled south to pick him back up. passed MRA and 2 2-boy teams here and were within about 10min of BW. picked David back up who had had a mostly clean run, then portaged over spillway and mini dam, then into Laughery Creek.
Laughery Creek was a slog. think USARA Nats "adventure paddle" except longer and with less portaging more pushing. Jeff and David were in and out of the boat hundreds of times. I was in the middle and only got out on the worst ones - just not efficient, which made me feel lazy. we got rained on quite hard. but we kept working the creek and towards the end we caught up with BW. v proud of the boys here, they did so well.
TREK (CPs 16-23)
used our mandatory gear extra socks to dry out map and plot the trek. mostly road running. BW out of TA 5min ahead of us and MRA into TA 5min behind us. a horse-race! caught BW on the road run and pushed ahead. attacked the first CP (22?) together with them, punched together, and then took different exit routes, mostly by design bc we like navving solo. CP21 looked sketchy in a flat forested area so we took what we thought was a SUPER safe route to the "change in forest maturity". didn't work. west side trails (supplemental map) were not as shown and we ended up relocating on the east side. didn't feel good about anything having to do with either map. on chance happened on an abandoned, unmapped trail that led directly to CP. frustrating. lost about 30min to BW here, and MRA ahead now too.
a stray dog had started following us near the paddle take-out and it was still with us, probably entertained by our fumbling in the woods at 21. we crossed Hwy 50 and it almost got hit - i screamed and looked away! but it was still alive and followed us to 19 and 20 where we ran into MRA. next we had to go into town so we yelled at the dog and hit it with a stick. it seemed to get the hint. we ran straight into town, did the rappel off a water tower (120'??) then the dog was there at the bottom again! turns out it just followed MRA instead - sorry! it followed us to the other in-town CP and then back to Race HQ. we learned BW had left TA about 5min ago but we still had to plot.
BIKE (CPs 24-30)
plotted and zoomed out after BW. saw them at first CP which was surprise paddle event - take inflatable raft and paddle 100' across lake, go get the CP at top of hill, paddle back. we laughed bc Jeff had JUST put on dry socks and his "good" mtb shoes. that's AR for ya. we walked the raft thru first muddy part and then paddled. got CP fine and back into shore 20min down on BW. chased, everyone pulling but obvi mine were way shorter. the loop was all on roads, mostly paved, not a lot of climb. we kept hoping to see BW's blinkies but never did until the last out-n-back CP.
TREK (CPs 31-34)
we got back to TA with about 55min remaining and 4 points left. BW was gone but we TAd quickly and got out as well. we thought we had time for 2, mayyyybe 3. saw BW at out-n-back for closest CP so we knew they had same route choice. exchanged spanks. went and got our 2nd CP and decided that the only chance we had was to go in and hope that BW got greedy w 3 CPs/overtime. of course they did not, they were waiting for us at the finish line!!
so that's our race! obvi we are bummed about the prologue and CP21 but what can you do. BW ran a great race and i was stoked to see my 2 CT teammates crush it. we ran a solid race, stayed committed to each other, just didn't sparkle w brilliance. next time :)
funny story from the first part of the paddle - Jeff and I dropped David off to run the out-n-back to CP12. 2 2-boy teams were there as well. we were chatting and Jeff said "we're just waiting for our boy to get back" and one of the guys was like "oh you're racing with your son? that's so nice!". so that was the joke for the rest of the race - me and Jeff being David's parents!
