Strength 30:00 [4]

The Gallys had us all over - just an excuse for Ms.Gally's reign of terror in her basement of boot-camp horrors. Actually, a solid circuit workout.
Harder part was when she invited the remaining few of us back down after dinner for pull-ups and 500m erg sprints, on full bellies.
Gally schooled me on the erg!

So great of them to set this up and host us all!

Running 1:42:39 [3] 16.93 km (6:04 / km) +294m 5:35 / km
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Nice solid run with the boys in Silver Creek area. Perfect winter run with a strong group.

I felt the lack of running this month- heel was sore from yesterday's thumbs-of-death, and the hamstring thing is still there.

XC Skiing 1:10:00 [3]

Gorgeous bluebird day for a ski around the 'hood with Bash.
Actually a bit tricky to wax as the sun (gasp) warmed the snow.

Strength 30:00 [2]

Spent some time splitting and hauling wood, while the dogs raced around and wrestled in the snow like crazy beasts.

Strength (Core) 22:00 [2]

Caron's core class. Gonna be sore...

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Caron went easy on us for the yoga to make up for a tough core class.

Strength 50:00 [2]

Workout 2, foot/kneehab and some lumberjack work.

XC Skiing 1:05:00 [3]

Wonderful sunny but breezy day out. Took the big guy skijoring on the closed Duffy's Lane, and we sped along following deer scent I guess.
We also did some nice Palgrave doubletrack.

After all the romping with his brother earlier, he ran out of gas near the end and I was practically pulling him along the last 5 min.

XC Skiing 35:00 [3]

Beautiful moonlit ski home at a dead calm -20. Bazingadog trotted along with a slack harness, like the perfect on-leash dog of our dreams.

Tuesday Feb 24, 2015 #

XC Skiing 1:10:00 [2]

Nice commute with a leisurely BZdog. Walking the twisty bits makes it less exciting for sure, but in a good way.
Staff are clamouring for AD to come to work Thursday - I'll have to drive them both in so the big guy can school him in office protocol.

Monday Feb 23, 2015 #

XC Skiing 50:00 [3]

Nice brisk ski to work. -26c, sparkling morning, dead calm, beautiful Charlevoix trails. Doesn't get much better!

XC Skiing 55:00 [3]

Scenic route home.

Snowshoeing 1:10:00 [2]

Out with the hounds. Bazingadog was a bit of a handful on leash, especially as his brother can frolic freely. Really nice sugary powder snow, and we did a fair bit of bushwhacking. The dogs were going nuts in the chest-deep stuff, leaping and beating eachother up. We love winter!!

Short ski after to post some signs on our property for our new neighbours, letting them know that if they want to cross on snowshoes we'd appreciate them not obliterating the ski tracks while ignoring the snowshoe track right beside them.

Running race 50:31 [4] 6.89 km (7:20 / km) +157m 6:35 / km

O- cup UKR.
I was debating using snowshoes, but we arrived without enough time to test them. Turns out they would have been good in the bush, and better for a strategy of more direct lines. Instead, I decided to run packed trails as much as possible, even if it was longer.
I went into the first box with a plan to run the trail to the far control and then come backwards, having a nice broken trail to follow back to controls once I met the leaders, and I got to run my own race. It worked pretty well but the snow was still slow. I met Bash, DD and Anvil just as I left the box.
I overshot 6 as I ran on the trail North of it, but managed to nail everything in the second box ending up 5th overall. I enjoyed doing my own nav a lot, rather than running in a pack.

Nice race by Eugenius and UKR, with wonderful wine prizing. Good lunch after too.

Strength 40:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, part of workout 1, a few more dynamic leg things.
Feeble on chin-ups again as I've been slacking.

XC Skiing 1:52:00 [3]

First short loop trying to ski with the whole family. BZDog was a bit wound up at first, and made the 2 crux spots more challenging than our usual commute ski. Once we settled in both dogs galloped along nicely. We agreed it would be better for my knee etc to de-ski and walk the technical bits when the big guy is harnessed up.

Next Bash and I went out to re-break the trails in Palgrave East. Lovely day in perfect conditions.

Friday Feb 20, 2015 #

XC Skiing 35:00 [3]

Short jaunt with Adventuredog, my first time skiing with him. He's perfect. As much as I love skijoring with the Megabeastie, it's a hassle compared to just having AD trot along.

Wednesday Feb 18, 2015 #

Misc 1:05:00 [2]

Commute with the big guy. Short on time due to volunteer stuff.

Monday Feb 16, 2015 #

Misc 1:00:00 [2]

Skate on the canals with the Doughtys.
I took some turns pushing the T-man in his sled, and it was a lot more work. Goose did the bulk of the pushing, and fast!
Great to be out on a chilly but perfect day.

Sunday Feb 15, 2015 #

Snowshoeing 1:07:00 [2]

Bash and I did a little active recovery snowshoe, despite -24 and strong winds with nasty windchill. It wasn't bad in the bush at all, but we felt sorry for the racers who did the shortened skate ski - the snow would be like sand. Coach LD had some tough conditions!

We did a mix of bushwhacking and easy jogging on the winding trails.

Gatineau Loppet- GPS to follow.

Cold, snowy conditions, windy and below -20 at times but actually not too chilly once skiing. Bash and I started way back in the last wave, and it was hard work moving up through all sorts of bottlenecks at first as pokey skiers would ski side by side. After about 20 k it opened up and I got into some decent trains moving at a reasonable pace. Beautiful forest trails for the first 2/3, then more monotonous road.
My Goosed skis were fantastic, decent glide and great grip even at the end.
I found the climbing fairly easy, and that's where I passed most people. By 35k I was only with a small handful of folks, and the tracks were snowy and slower.
In the last 3k we ran smack into the back of a kid's race, which took a fair bit of effort to get by. The kids were giving'er!
I was close to cramping at the 50k mark, so probably did it about right. Layers were perfect.
Apparently this was a very slow year. The winner was just under 3:30. Good skiers I know were pleased to finish 45 min slower than last year.

It looks like I was about 30% back overall and in my age group, which is fine for my second ski race and lack of long ski training.

Bash did really well I'm proud to say.

XC Skiing 1:04:00 [3]

Nice ski in with fairly mild temps. Much colder on the way back as I'd dressed for -8. Bazingadog hustled on the way home too- no dawdling in -18 with a strong wind. Ski tracks like machine grooming all the way!

Wednesday Feb 11, 2015 #

XC Skiing 29:00 [3]

Fast commute with BZdog- spent too much time prepping skis for Gatineau and fiddling with other stuff to get in a decent ski.

XC Skiing 34:00 [2]

Easy night ski home. No coyotes this time.

Tuesday Feb 10, 2015 #

XC Skiing 32:00 [3]

Another perfect ski to work. Tried the Pursuit boots without the cuff to see if it's more heel-friendly.

Monday Feb 9, 2015 #

XC Skiing 1:05:00 [2]

Skijor to work with the big guy.
Palgrave West has a nice ski track next to a good snowshoe track! Someone read the signs.

Palgrave East is pretty stomped. Oh well.

Note

Wow , great dog-MTB vid here. I can appreciate all the work that went into filming all the angles, pooch cam, helmetcam, dronecam, trailcam...

I'm hoping Adventuredog can bike with me like that.

Stars WAR with Bash. (GPS to follow)

We decided to start on classic skis, carrying snowshoes and running shoes in big packs.

The plan was to clean the ski CPs first, including bonus CP combinations. We then planned to drop skis at 40 and snowshoe the rest.

Conditions were excellent and skiing went fine, other than a nasty bit on a dirty snowmobile trail, and we found that we could ski well on the main snowshoe trails too so we never switched to snowshoes. Bash's nav was quite clean, despite having to use my home-made map board.

The wheels fell off when we headed into 39 where I took a turn onto some promising tracks, and we ended up doing an awkward bushwack powder flounder for 27 wasted minutes before coming all the way back and finding the CP right where I had seen a team go in (G-stix and Hermes as it turned out- d'oh!) My bad. Bash figured it out.

From there we had to high-tail it back, hitting a few CPs on the way.
We missed 3 controls and the matrix.

If we hadn't wasted so much time at 39 we could perhaps have gotten everything but the matrix. Tarno/Rydlo won, and MBR and the Wadd Squad were close on their heels.

Nicely put together race, and so great to race with Bash in real winter conditions.

Snowshoeing 40:00 [1]

Took the new pooch for a snowshoe to the Bruce trail.
Forgot how easy it is to have a dog that doesn't necessarily lunge powerfully every now and then.

Later, Bash and I tried him off leash and... He was perfect! Woo hoo. Trotted along nicely staying close, and came instantly when we called. He's now Adventuredog on attackpoint.

Also took a p!ssed off Bazingadog for a rocket-ride Skijor after. He's not keen on watching us take his new bro out without him.

Chopped and hauled wood after too.

XC Skiing 1:45:00 [3]

Perimeter tour of Palgrave to install my "please hike or snowshoe beside the ski tracks where possible" signs. They don't normally have much effect, but the ski tracks are great right now so it couldn't hurt. Excellent ski outing on a perfect day.

I broke trail on the NE section in dep powder, but always off to the side of the trail. I met one hiker carefully avoiding my new tracks, who said "Well, I saw the signs".

Also sawed off a hazardous low branch on a steep hill.

Time deducted for sign-stapling.

Thursday Feb 5, 2015 #

XC Skiing 1:20:00 [3]

Nice ski in and a rocket ride back with fast skis and a deer-motivated BZdog. Great ski tracks right now!

Yoga 20:00 [1]

Some progressive yoga and foot/kneehab.

Wednesday Feb 4, 2015 #

XC Skiing 1:02:00 [2]

Bah- appointments all morning so just a basic commute. Nice tracks- the skiing is great!

Lots of stop-and-sniff by the big guy.

Tuesday Feb 3, 2015 #

XC Skiing 32:00 [3]

Another fantastic ski in with the big guy.

XC Skiing 32:00 [3]

Nice ski commute home. The beast is a little tired I think- more trotting, less flying.

Monday Feb 2, 2015 #

XC Skiing 36:00 [3]

Woo hoo, shin-deep fluffy powder!
Great skijor in, even if the Bazingadog decided not to haul much.

XC Skiing 55:00 [3]

Great Skijor home with the big guy. He was in fine form especially on the Charlevoix trails where he was finding fresh deer tracks. Flying through unbroken powder on a clear calm cold day with my big buddy thundering along may be my favourite sport!
Bonus- just getting dark as we got home, and we watched a spectacular moonrise.
Surprisingly not too tired from yestday's race.

XC Skiing 1:32:00 [3]

Magical moonlight ski with Bash and Coach LD. Didn't need headlamps even in the deep woods, and got some tele turns in on a moonlit open area by Thinker's Hill. Ahh, life is good.

Snowshoeing warm up/down 15:00 [1]

Running 25:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Short outing to tire out the big guy- he's going a bit nuts without a bit of a workout. Also dragged in more firewood.

Snowshoeing race 55:51 intensity: (30 @0) + (40 @3) + (54:29 @4) + (12 @5) 10.64 km (5:15 / km) +308m 4:35 / km

Personal Best Snowshoe/ run race

(38:00 snowshoe 7km, 17:00 run 3.6km)
This race had an 8k snowshoe/4k run, 4k snowshoe/4k run, and a 4k snowshoe only option.

Bash and I entered the 8/4. There was a mass start. Right off the gun I was chasing Sean Bechtel, and was with him until he hammered the first hill while I dialed it back. I got passed by a tall triathlete guy, but I had a feeling he was going to crack on the uphills, and I dropped him on a long descent, followed closely by Luis leading the 4/4. Sean disappeared, and I tried to keep a lung-friendly pace on the hills.

Back at the start/transition I was in second but well back. I did the run pretty hard, and didn't lose much time there, but Sean was almost 6 min ahead of me at the finish!

WandAR and Bash were 1-2 females.
Luis won the 4/4, followed by Ruppel.

Fun event. I wish there was deep snow rather than crust on the trails, but it was still good times.
