Cycling (MTB) 2:00:00 [3]

To Albion with Bash, but we got separated early on when I passed some riders in a big group on the singletrack. Later on someone told me Bash was ahead of me, so I raced on to catch her. Turns out I was ahead. Still had a great ride, in perfect conditions. I made the Haute Route switchback for the first time this year, and had a clean ride other than one turn in the Woo Woo singletrack near the sugarshack.

Paddlng 1:00:00 [3]

Paddling with The Gazelle. The paddlng form's coming back, and we moved a boat pretty well together on a windy day.
The female Treehuggers were looking good, and should be formidable.

Saturday Apr 29, 2006 #

Hiking long 4:00:00 [1]

Hike with the Wadd squad to toughen the feet a bit for the Rogaine. Great route through all sorts of wild areas around Hamilton- some familiar from RTH, some new. Nice to spend time with this bunch.

Friday Apr 28, 2006 #

Running intervals (Commute) 25:00 [4]

I was at Career Day at a local school, but ran back to pick up my van from work. Speed intervals on the Rollercoaster, Warmup, 2 on, 1 off, 3 on, 1 off, 2 on then cooldown.

Paddlng 1:00:00 [3]

Paddling on Island Lake with Bash.
It's been a while since I've been in my sea kayak (and longer since I paddled it empty) so I'm glad I worked some bugs out. The Trayling technique's starting to come back, but the lack of practice all winter shows.
Great day out- lots of wildlife, inlcuding a labrador-sized snapper and a ton of fish jumping.

Thursday Apr 27, 2006 #

Note

Didn't log it, but we ran our butts off from the Spadina station to the Bloor Cinema to catch the paddling film festival with The Gazelle and Gazette. Sprinted stairs, agility training past pedestrians. Just made it, after being badly stuck in traffic.

Note- I won a membership to the Outing Club of East York, which I can't use. Anybody want it?

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout # 1. Did another record on a few exercises for this machine, but I'm getting a bit on the heavy side for biking.
Kind of a rushed workout, as I wanted to get in a bike ride before work.

Cycling (MTB) 2:00:00 [4]

Great ride around Albion with LeAnimal. Great conditions on a beautiful day. The singletrack's great. Still need to work on my climbing, but L and I are pretty well matched here.

Wildlife report- We got buzzed by a huge raptor, either a monster Osprey or a bald eagle! Some sort of bird with what looked like a 2M wingspan, brown body and white head. There were a pair soaring over the pond.

Cycling 30:00 [2]

Ride down to Albion and back to work, plus some easier bits of Albion.

Cycling (Commute) 25:00 [2]

Easy commute home in the dark.

Tuesday Apr 25, 2006 #

Cycling (Commute) 52:00 [2]

Drier ride than I expected. We hurried off after dinner to the PCA (Palgrave Conservation Area) trail plan meeting.

Monday Apr 24, 2006 #

Running (Commute) 30:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Easy commute with the T-dog.

Running (Commute) 32:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

An easy jog/hike home with the T-dog.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3. Almost talked myself out of it as I was tired from a low-sleep weekend, but glad I did it. Skipped the Hard Core Monday though.

Sunday Apr 23, 2006 #

Orienteering 1:40:00 [3]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Score-o at Mansfield.
I had a reasonably good run, but some poor strategy decisions and one mistake made for a lower score than I had thought. Oh well, it was still lots of fun.
Bash was first female, and beat my score handily!

Note- I guess it was zone 3, but my HRM drowned when paddling yesterday. !#!@&%*!

Saturday Apr 22, 2006 #

Running 1:00:00 [4]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Run with Thumbs of Death to K2 at Glen Haffy. ToD was going faster than I expected, as this was to be a 2 hr run, but he only did this section fast.

Bash was going to come, but when I got up in the dark at 5AM in the rain she thought better of it- after all there's P&L's party to think of tonight.

Running 1:15:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Run back with K/O and ToD, plus warm up/cooldown.

Paddlng 1:40:00 [2]

Got out on Island Lake with The Padre, Gazelle and Gazette to practice paddling configurations for both RTN and SAC. First paddle of the year, and it felt great even if my technique's gone down the toilet over the winter.
Bash and I seem acceptably matched to the 2 lads for paddling- they're not too much faster.

Strength 1:00 [5]

Feats-of-strength at the Haven.
I managed 2 more wide-grip pulldowns than last time, but still 4 behind Scotty's record of 17! His partner LiPy also set the woman's record of 5 chinups.

Scotty can also do the Peanut-butter-Jar-on-the-forehead trick better than anyone else!

Friday Apr 21, 2006 #

Cycling (Commute) 30:00 [2]

Did part of the Tree Hugger singletrack- It is definitely meant to be ridden clockwise, not the way I went! Also got a snakebite-flat when I jumped over a curb too fast leaving Reddington, and had to carry the bike the last bit. At least this 'bent's easier to hike-a-bike.

Cycling (Commute) 24:00 [2]

Threatening skies and dinner plans made for a short ride home.

Thursday Apr 20, 2006 #

Cycling (Commute) 22:00 [2]

Shorter ride than I'd hoped due to some last-minute paperwork.

Cycling (Commute+) 1:20:00 [2]

Back home with Bulletdog through the Red Dog Singletrack, then around the rest of Palgrave. 5 swims for the pooch!
A recumbent loaded down with a backpack full of computer and paperwork is a bit odd for technical singetrack, but I managed OK.

Running 25:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Run in the Don Valley. Nice morning, surprisingly quiet.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Running hills 28:00 [5]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Found a nice steady 2-minute hill out of the Don Valley and got some hill intervals in.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2 + some extra straight-arm pullbacks for my sore shoulder, according to Doc Thumbs-of-Death.

Monday Apr 17, 2006 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:10:00 [2]

Tree Huggers mega-training day part 1
Workout #1

Orienteering 35:00 [2]
ahr:127 shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Mega-training part 2-
Hanging flags on the advanced GRR course with Bash and the Bulletdog.

Running hills 30:00 [3]
ahr:145 shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Mega training part 3- run around Albion Hill North with Bash and Bulletdog.

Cycling (MTB) 2:25:00 [3]

Mega-training part 4 with Bash. Biked from home to Albion and around the trails. The new bike does singletrack really well- I had a nearly perfect ride in the new North East singletrack. Fantastic day to be out- the wild onions are all over the place in vibrant green, perfect temperature, clear skies.

Strength (Core) 40:00 [2]

Mega- training with Bash part 5- the dreaded Hard Core Monday workout.
OK, now it's time to veg out.

Sunday Apr 16, 2006 #

Note

Let's try this again.

I put some photos of the lastest 'bent configuration at http://www.elmtreedental.com/AR%20Recumbent%2005.h... for those who are curious.

Cycling 1:10:00 [3]

I managed to sneak in an hour of riding before we headed out. I did the Salty Steven singletrack, and also all of the Red Dog except the second-last bit due to time constraints. The new bike setup worked well, on this highly tricky trail.
Also ran into K/O around 11:30. She started out with Thumbs-of-death at 5AM, and kept going since he stopped at 8AM, for a 6 hour run!

Orienteering (Course setting research) 2:00:00 [1]

Helped Bash scout an upcoming Sprint course. The dogs enjoyed some serious wallowing in ponds.

Friday Apr 14, 2006 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3. Have to get ready for the Feats of Strength at Phatty and LeAnimal's party!

Cycling tempo 2:00:00 [3]

Lots of rain this AM so Bash and I did a tempo ride on the rail trail. I did a bit extra.

Thursday Apr 13, 2006 #

Note

Does leading a Passover dinner that goes to midnight count as an endurance event? Certainly dealing with that amount of food has to count for something.

Wednesday Apr 12, 2006 #

Running (Commute) 40:00 [1]

Another easy trot with T-dog, who's a bit tired from yesterday's run with Bash.

Tuesday Apr 11, 2006 #

Cycling (Commute+) 45:00 [2]

Left a bit early to do part of the Salty Steven Singletrack. The new big front wheel's good for rolling over big stuff, but slightly less agile in the tight corners.

Cycling (Commute+) 45:00 [3]

Back home on the rest of the singletrack.
Good test of my minimalist rack, bouncing over 30 cm logs with a backpack full of computers etc. It failed the test, but that's the idea before we race with it.

Monday Apr 10, 2006 #

Running (Commute) 40:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Pokey commute with T-dog, but it's a recovery day.

Strength (Core) 40:00 [2]

When I got home, Bash had just started the Hard Core DVD:( I was hoping to join her when she was almost finished, but no-o-o, we have to groan through the whole thing. I guess the GRR uses some core, as it was a tough one today.

Sunday Apr 9, 2006 #

Running race (GRR) 4:24:00 [4] +760m
shoes: Icebugs 2

GRR with Bash and Hingo.
Had a good race, in great weather.

In the matrix Hingo and I navigated while Bash ran the trail and road, but we still found things OK. The only real error we made in the race was when Hingo and I were out front near CP 10C.
We leapfrogged the Tools and Fubar throughout the race, but our cunning navigator Bash was right on the money in the final advanced section and we got past them both.
This was our best ever overall finish, 8th I think. Both Bash and Hingo were really strong.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Should really warm up more, but there's just not time between the captain's meeting. I hate cold uphill starts- it takes me half an hour to warm up. I could have cooled down more, but was sore and hungry.

Friday Apr 7, 2006 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2. Back up to near the higher weights again.

Running tempo 27:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Trail run with Bash. She put on some strong bursts of speed, for someone who swears she's not a sprinter.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Thursday Apr 6, 2006 #

Cycling (Commute) 24:00 [2]

Nice ride in to work. The snow's still there, but I didn't need ice studs, and the muck was frozen.

Cycling (Commute+) 1:08:00 [2]

Rode the rail trail to my environmental meeting, and back in the dark. Always seems faster riding in the dark!
Had some problems with my new ultralight rack system- needs work.

Wednesday Apr 5, 2006 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1

Running (Commute+) 56:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

A longer, slow run to work in the snow.

Running (Commute) 28:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

A nice easy run home by headlamp. Running in the dark on trails feels very different, like I could keep going forever (Probably running slower than I suspect)

Tuesday Apr 4, 2006 #

Running (Commute) 27:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Still some ice out there in the low sections.

Running warm up/down (Commute+) 20:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Warm up and cool down for my intervals.

Running hills (Commute+) 28:00 [4]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Hill intervals on the way home. Repeats up the steepest off-trail hills I could find in prep for the GRR, as well as Pond Hill repeats. 11 sets in all.

Monday Apr 3, 2006 #

Strength (Core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core Conditioning DVD.
I should have run too but there was a massive thunderstorm, and we had a lightning hit in Palgrave.

Sunday Apr 2, 2006 #

Cycling long 4:40:00 [3] 73.0 km (15.6 kph) +697m

Rode with Phatty and LeAnimal.
We rode the rail trail to Inglewood, then from there up the closed Grange road to some more trails suggested by the Caledon Cycle guys. Lots of good dry trail riding, ATV trails etc. We ended up on the Elora-Cataract trail, and into Forks of the Credit park, then back.

On the rail trail, we saw a motorcycle go tearing by. Next we met our buddy Crash, who said she saw a police car chase the bike, who escaped onto the rail trail.

Saturday Apr 1, 2006 #

Yoga 20:00 [1]

Power Yoga DVD- call it 20 @1.
Also walked the dogs for 2hrs, and spent a long time cleaning up the yard and garage- a "rest" day.
