Running 26:00 [3]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Run in with BZdog. He was better behaved when Bambi ran out in front of us this time.

Monday Jun 29, 2015 #

Paddlng (SUP) 30:00 [1]

Warm up paddle - BGY showed up and looked like he was born on the board. Zero learning curve for him. Mike P also came and did great right out of the gate.

Bash made a splash. I am sure it was the board's fault.

Yoga (SUP) 30:00 [1]

Caron managed to repel the storms.
I tried to skip the more stable board- friendly variations and do normal yoga poses where possible, like high side plank. Extra fun course with lots more folks, and only a couple went in. I felt bad that one was Caron when she was trying to show me how to ramp up the trickiness.
BGY could do 1-legged poses on his first day.

Nice Sushi dinner after with Caron, Barrie, Jill and Tim.

ahr:122 max:153 shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR

Easy Hockley loop with Bash and BiT in the dumping rain. Good test of gear and fine company. The creeks were roaring!

I tried to cruise lightly on the downhills to practice avoiding jostling my stomach too much at Eiger. Did some extra out-and-back bits on hills.

ahr:135 max:168 shoes: New Balance 1210v2

Off to Blue Mountain with Bash before the biblical rain predicted.
We did 6 climbs up various trails and ski hills, getting max vertical in for the time we had.

Note- garmin download is only the first 1/3 for some reason, although totals are ok.

Running 28:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance 1210v2

Cool morning run in with the big guy. Finished flagging the PI bypass.

Stopped on the bridge as a huge snapper crossed Hwy 50. Southbound cars stopped, and I flagged the Northbound cars to stop but with Brody I couldn't get out there to move the turtle. Luckily the first car's driver just got out, picked the turtle up by the tail and tossed it into the bush on the far side, getting a honk and 2 thumbs up from the tractor trailer driver behind him.

Dingle hill repeats with BGY and AD on a nice cool morning. Trying to get some vertical in.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Singletrack commute with AD. He had a good frolic with Skyerocket when we met Crash on the way home.

Monday Jun 22, 2015 #

Running hills 15:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance 1210v2

Early morning repeats on Mt Tobler North Face with poles and AD.

Running 28:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 1210v2

Commute with BZDog.

Paddlng (SUP) 40:00 [2]

Yoga (SUP) 25:00 [1]

Second class. I used the inflatable SUP which is more wobbly than the plastic one Bash was on. (Opposite from last time.) I was a little less cocky on it as it's tricky on one foot, but managed triangle pose. Cap'n Trent walked the plank a few times, and Bash made a splash but did some impressive Dancer pose.

Sunday Jun 21, 2015 #

Cycling 40:00 [2]

Easy ride with the dogs around Palgrave East to Wheelie's pond for a good swim. Logan the adventuredog was just flying and had to wait up for us on the bike.

Strength 45:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, workout 3

ahr:146 max:184 shoes: New Balance 1210v2

Collingwood run with BGY, Raps and Ben and E.
Easy way up the grind, then Ben and I decided to do a repeat on Cascade while the others explored the TNF route up top. We met up near Loree forest and ran back together, and Ben and I ran the Switchbacks down and back up Cascade to meet the others.

Tons of poison ivy, but perfect weather.

Great outing. Stomach not an issue at this pace, but 50K would take over 8 horus. Able to enjoy Fish Tacos and beer after.

4 PM

Cycling 1:16:00 intensity: (30:00 @3) + (46:00 @4) 13.3 km (10.5 kph) +238m

Excellent mid-ring ride around Palgrave East and West. Flawless ride around Salty Stephen, except for the hairpins at the last 10m which continue to elude me.

Thursday Jun 18, 2015 #

Running 59:00 [3]
shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR

Run to work with extra pond hills. AD was a bit confused by the repeat.

Quick run back before it stormed.

Wednesday Jun 17, 2015 #

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 1210v2

Wet run in with Adventuredog, but nice on the return. Finished off the Poison Ivy Bypass routefinding, just need to clear some more dead branches through the dense firs.

Cycling 1:10:00 [2]

Nice ride with the big boy over to the secret ponds in Palgrave East for swims, then back in the evening just before dark.

Monday Jun 15, 2015 #

Paddlng (SUP) 30:00 [2]

First SUP and Yoga class with Caron at the quarry.
Only been on one briefly before, but got the hang of it pretty fast. Compared with some of the wobbly kayaks we've tried in wavy conditions, this thing is like a floating raft.

Yoga (SUP) 30:00 [1]

Found this much more fun than dry land yoga and less boring.
Perhaps it's the element of danger. I felt very comfotable and tried harder versions than Caron wanted us to do, but failed at falling overboard despite brief attempts at crow, star, aeroplane and tree pose. Eagle will be a challenge for more than 5 seconds.

Sunday Jun 14, 2015 #

Hiking (Tire schlepping) 1:10:00 [3]

Dumping rain, so no biking. I took Schlepp Jr for a tour of all the hills in our immediate vicinity so I could make a dash for home if the thunder came. Also hauled a big load of logs.

Strength 50:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, heelhab, workout 2.

Note

Took the dogs for a hike and swim in the fenced property. BZdog checked everywhere for his new training partner Bambi but no luck.

Running 3:07:10 intensity: (1:24:22 @1) + (1:18:13 @2) + (24:35 @3) 21.05 km (8:54 / km) +700m 7:37 / km
ahr:131 max:163 shoes: Hoka Stinson ATR

Great run with BGY up in the Pretty River area. We detoured to find extra rugged terrain and more vertical.

Perfect day in lush tropical conditions.

Ran into Goose and Coach LD out there twice!

Used poles. Heel still hurt after.

Nice to see Funderstorm, who ran with Bash.

Friday Jun 12, 2015 #

Note

Bazingadog had his best playmate ever today- I took the dogs for an off-leash run and squeaky-ball-chase in the neighbour's fenced property. After a good romp I saw them playing with a bi-i-i-g light brown dog I thought. Logan came running back to me, but the Big Guy was tearing around one-on-one with a full grown deer. Neither beast seemed all that intimidated. The deer hopped an inner fence, was nose to nose with Brody for a bit, snorted then jumped out the far side and they both disappeared for quite a while despite my calling, whistling and squeaking his favourite toy.
BZdog finally came back with his tongue practically dragging on the ground, huge doggy smile on his face, and we finished off with a huge swim for both dogs. They are out for the count now.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 1 + kb and every bit of foot, knee and heelhab I could think of.

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 1210v2

2dog jog to work and back. I found an optimum PI-free bushwhack on the way out, but couldn't retrace it on the return. Time for flagginig tape.

Tuesday Jun 9, 2015 #

Running 55:00 [1]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Easy jog in with the big guy, and more PIbypass bushwhack work.
Heel and knee a bit sore.

Monday Jun 8, 2015 #

Note

Pouring rain and a sore heel meant driving to work.

Kettle Moraine 50K
2 PM

Running race 5:48:42 intensity: (10:01 @0) + (19 @1) + (4:26 @2) + (5:02:53 @3) + (28:24 @4) + (2:39 @5) 49.97 km (6:59 / km) +826m 6:27 / km
ahr:162 max:195 shoes: New Balance 1210v2

Kettle Moraine 50k.
Plan was to run slower than ever on first half and hopefully feel Ok by the end.

We started at the 100k out-and-back turn around, and I saw Bash about 20 min before the start.

She was looking good, and said the course was nice, but warned me about the exposed hot meadows from 13-25k.

I headed off at a conservative pace. Other than one guy who took off, I was leading the 50+ wave and steadily moved through the 100 k runners, walking uphills and watching my HRM like a hawk. At the meadows I filled my hat and bottle with ice, walked the uphills, and the heat didn't bother me.

I was caught by the first guy from the second wave (started 30 min back) at the mid-point aid station, at 2:30. My HRM quit there.

By the 30k mark I had the first ominous gut gurgle. By 35k my stomach was in shutdown mode, and from then on it was a suffer-jog with walking breaks. I had a little ginger ale, but had to walk it off- I really felt it sloshing on the downhills.

My heel was steadily sore, but my left knee and right glute weren't happy either.

I made it across the line in my slowest 50 by far, surprised to hear that I was first 50+ as the fast guy at the start was a relay runner. I had a little more ginger ale, but puked it back up 5x and could barely force water and a little fruit down for a couple more hours.

I was 8th overall, and shockingly had taken almost 80 min off the previous very soft record. Winner was 4:30.

Great to see Bash finish, pretty much on schedule, and Timato rocked a great 100 miles in the low 22s!
5 PM

Note

HRM stopped working at 2:30, and Garmin basically stuck at 164 for the rest of the race. HR was much lower than that in the second half, where pace dropped from 6:00/km to 8:00+.

Friday Jun 5, 2015 #

Cycling 50:00 [2]

Easy commute with AD

Wednesday Jun 3, 2015 #

Strength 45:00 [2]

Foot, knee and heelhab, + workout 3.

Running 52:00 [3]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Run in with the big boy. Tried the PI-free bushwhack from the North side but didn't connect right with the southern exit- I came out a bit too far west.

Found a better path on the return trip.

Tuesday Jun 2, 2015 #

Cycling 55:00 [2]

Nice ride in with Adventuredog, with extra singletrack.

Monday Jun 1, 2015 #

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Run in with a trotting BZDog. We bushwhacked back home to find a poison-ivy bypass. Near home a deer bolted out on to the trail 10m from us, and the big guy was a handful after that despite some stern words.
