Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: NB MT 101

Nice final run with Bash, Harps and the dogs Kona and Trek. We ran mill creek, between cliffs and with petroglyphs. The dogs enjoyed swimming in the river as much as possible and it was a nice final run.

Moab has been a great holiday, and I hope to come back again.

Cycling 2:25:00 [3]

(4 hrs) Back to Porcupine Ridge with Bash, Harps and 4 of Harps' buddies.

Bit of a hassle using the shuttle van- Driver was afraid of the 'bent. We finally persuaded him to put it on the roof with a wheel- grabber rack just like all the others, just securing the back tire, and I had to sign a big waiver.

Once on the trail Joe, Mac and I tended to scoot down the steep stuff, while the Harps was climbing like a machine, but made efforts to keep the pack together.

A few incidents- Mark flatted, and Ben gashed his calf up pretty well. I had to put him back together with Butterfly stick-ties, 1/3 of a sanitary pad, a wrapping of gauze, then an arm warmer as an outer layer. He got 15 stitches later.

Even with all this we had a great time with exciting riding and spectacular scenery.
The boys had an absolute blast.

We're gonna miss Moab.

Cycling 1:40:00 [3]

(2.5 hr)
Back to Slickrock with Bash. We did some more GoPro filming, and found it a bit easier second time around. The place is basically a human-powered roller coaster.

Unfortunately Bash lived up to her AP name with an endo, banging her elbow, hip, knee and ribs. No Princess, we still had a decent ride after a bit of a pause.

Hiking 1:05:00 [1]
shoes: Salomon Crossmax Green

Bash and I headed out of the desert and up the La Sal mountains. What a change to be wearing gloves, hat and micro spikes. We had a good hike up to 10 800 feet in the snow and trees, but Geyser Pass is still in the forest so not much view at the top. The drive up was pretty scenic though.

Running 55:00 [1]
shoes: Salomon Crossmax Green

Easy run back down. Some post-holing in the soft snow.
3 PM

Cycling 1:40:00 [3]

Sovereign and Saltwash Flats trails with Harps and Bash.
Interesting area- bit of a moonscape with undulating rocky ridges and lots of dusty sand. Saltwash wasn't very 'Bent friendly, with loose sand and tight switchbacks, along with sketchy rocky and dusty climbs that I often had to push the 'bent up. Harps schooled us in this area, and had to wait for us a fair bit.

Luckily, the way back on Soverign was much better. Good flow, much nicer rocks and less sand made for a technical but fun finish.

Running 1:30:00 [2]
shoes: NB MT 101

( 2.5hrs) See Bash's log for photos, coming soon.

Met UltraChar and Chris for a run/ tour of the famous Arches park. Char had won her 24hr ultra overall two days before so she claimed she was running a little bit slower than usual, but seemed full of energy to me. We had a great time with stunning views and some really nice desert canyon running, and it was great to hang out with these two.

Cycling 1:40:00 intensity: (1:10:00 @2) + (30:00 @4)

Slickrock with Bash- woohoo!

We took the bikes to the famous slickrock today. I had been a little nervous about how the 'bent bike would work on this type of rock, worried I might slide off or topple over but it turns out to be just fine.
Very interesting area. Lots of rolling smooth red rock with amazing traction which lets you crawl up, down or sideways on almost anything. Good thing, as the lumps can get very very steep in places, and I used my granny gear a lot. There were a few incredibly steep Granny-Gear-insufficient spots I had to walk, or I'd have wheelied over backwards.

On the first section Bash was really missing her granny gear as her 2 x 10 doesn't have one, but once we got going things were just fine. She rode well and had lots of fun.
I got a fair bit of go pro footage, but it's going to need a lot of editing.

Lots of funny comments as I was able to ride up almost everything and passed a lot of people pushing their bikes. Best comment: Brit- "How does that thing work?" 20 year old kid responds: "That thing's legit. You should see him climb past us."
The Brit begged me for a chance to try the 'bent.

Had so much fun in this really amazing area. I couldn't stop smiling for about an hour afterwards. At dinner, of course I had to order the Wahoo (fish)

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: NB MT 101

Howling winds, with storms predicted so no biking. Much-needed relaxing morning.
Later Bash and I headed to Dead Horse Point for an easy but spectacular run on this finger of rock with Grand-Canyonesque vistas on both sides, but with the gusty winds I stayed well back.

Cycling 4:30:00 [3]

Finally got some sleep last night, and the plan was Magnificent 7 trail.
Off to a poor start as my pack kept slipping sideways, the GoPro died after 30 seconds, my pump handle fell off somewhere and I slid out on a little incline and crashed over, all in the first 15 minutes.
Found the bits, got right side up, stashed the GoPro and got my pack sorted.
Lots of great twisty single track in the first hour, where Hopper Forbes danced up and Bash rode strongly and smoothly, while I didn't get as good a rhythm and lagged a bit. Still a gorgeous ride, with great scenery.

Next couple of hours were on jeep tracks- which turned out to be more technical than the single track. We were stunned to see jeeps climbing ste-e-ep slopes with meter- high rocks steps.

Harps was riding really well, but my bike worked better here so it wasn't frustrating for me any more. Bash was great on the technical, but had no Granny gear on her 2x10.

There were quite a few hard Granny-Gear -required smooth rock climbs and rolling drops, some great views, some soft unrideable sand near the end- this ride had everything! Truly epic.

Cycling 3:15:00 [3]

Waaa hoo!
Fantastic ride on the Porcupine rim with Bash and Harps.
Amazing scenery, almost 35k of single track.
We had to climb a bit and hike a bike at first- feeling the 8000'!
I'd been wondering if the 'bent bike would work here. Turns out the 'Bent can handle the big drops better than the top-end all-mountain bikes Bash and Harps rented. I did get stuck on a couple of step-ups, where Harps danced by me but for the most part I rode more than the others could- on this trail. I suspect tomorrow the tables will turn.

Great ride, jaw-dropping scenery- one of the best rides I've done.

Note

Note- we went to see Charlotte V and Chris who were doing an ultra nearby. I slept both ways in the car, but great to see them.

Cycling (Commute +) 1:15:00 [2]

Nice singletrack ride on the Omega. Haven't got the hill climbing legs yet, (Pond hill fail) but a fun ride anyway. Bulletdog enjoyed 2 swims.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Foot/kneehab, 10+25+35+30 pushups, 10+8+7 Pull-ups, workout #2, KBs.

Running tempo 55:00 [4]
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite 2.0

Out to Palgrave East with Bazingadog for a solid run. He was surprisingly well behaved, and had 2 more swims. It's just cooking out there, especially when pushing it up the hills.

BZdog, for all his muscle and exuberance, doesn't really have all that much endurance yet. This was a decent run for him, and he was done after.

Running 25:00 [2]
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite 2.0

Nice night for a run home in the dark.
I just realized why my Crosslites seem pretty minimalist- I've been running without insoles this week.

Tuesday Mar 20, 2012 #

Cycling (Commute +) 1:15:00 [2]

Bulletdog and I rode the surprisingly dry SW Palgrave singletrack on the little Omega 'bent. I had to hike-a-bike around a few soft spots on the main trail to avoid trashing them, but things are drying up fast.

My knee was happier riding for sure. So-o-o great to be out biking on trails.

Monday Mar 19, 2012 #

Running (Commute) 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite 2.0

Easy recovery run to work and back with Bazingadog.
Feeling my knee a bit from the weekend. BZdog met 2 other pooches, including a none-too-friendly Sheppard cross, but he could handle him.
We picked up Bash and Bulletdog's trail and had a short Ben Hur section until we hollered at them to wait up.

Thomass Eliminator.
Despite my tired legs, I ended up running with Hammer on the first leg. As always, I'm a touch faster but he never hesitates and keeps dropping me as I ponder the map. I was 3rd to finish the first loop, and top 20 move on.
Second loop I wanted to run on my own, rather than hanging with the fast guys by the skin of my teeth. I saw Hammer head North so I deliberately went South, and had a lot more fun bumbling around by myself until on the way to F, when a large and irate fellow started yelling that I was trespassing, and to "get the F--- off his land". That threw what little rhythm I had way off, and between that and some narrow unmapped dark green in the field confusing me I did a pretty shabby job of nav-ing back, finishing 17th.

Top 10 move on, so as penance for my p*ss-poor work I didn't take my handicap when we started after the top runners. Took me a while to get back into the map, got most controls OK but I finished pretty well back I think.

Oh well, didn't expect much with 4 hours of hammering in my legs from yesterday. *Very* pleased that my knee wasn't too bad, and still had some speed in my legs once i warmed up.

GRR testing.

I have to miss the GRR this year, so I offered to test the course with CS. Can't reveal too many details, but Griz has put together a varied and challenging course, using the interesting terrain features very well. The usual mix of escarpment and rocky run, some nice woods, some muddy slopes and big climbs also has some unusual new features.

Thick fog in the AM gave way to clear sun and T-shirt weather.
CS and I ran well together and moved quickly on the first half. He's a more precise navigator, so the controls he led were more accurate and we kept up a good pace. We worked well on the nav together too, correcting small errors for each other.

We only did all our route planning and got instructions from Hammer as the Wadd Squad shuttled us to the start. At one point I hadn't realized we were on a walk-the-line until 1/3 through it, but CS wasn't too keen to go back and re-run it to look for flags. He'd started to run out of gas past the 2 hour mark- perhaps we went out a bit quick on the road sections. Some tums and advils helped CS de-cramp a bit, and he was still navigating well, but we did a fair bit of walking in the final hour. We shared the nav well, but he led more of the trickier CPs with confidence.

I think racers will like the course, except where they're shaking their fist in the air muttering "Damn you Griz".

Running 20:00 [1]

Easy jog with the dogs.
Also got in some Forest Fit- 100 pushups and 3 sets of tree pull-ups. Had to tie off Bzdog so he didn't haul my hands out from under me.

Cycling 40:00 [2]

Easy spin on the Omega 'bent to Caledon East with Bash to pick up the 'Bentmobile. We had to walk past the softest trail bits to avoid damage.

Thursday Mar 15, 2012 #

Note

All set for my first bike commute of the season, when a huge crack of thunder and torrential rain had me back in the car. 1 hour later it's brilliant sunshine, after I've driven. Grrrr....

Horrible forecast for my evening ride to my environmental meeting (Severe thunderstorm warning), but it would have been fine- again.

Strength (Home Gym +) 1:00:00 [2]

Foot & Kneehab, pushups and pulldowns, workout 2 + KBs. I need to do strength more often if I want to make progress- been doing more trainer riding and less strength in prep for Moab.

Running (Commute +) 50:00 [4]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Cold last night, so mud was more solid and so was my run.
Knee's not 100% but legs felt good, so I did the figure 8 Charlevoix hill loop, with some speed intervals thrown in. Still need the icebugs. Bulletdog could have used a swim!

Note

Found the old "Riding up the stairs" video.
Terrible quality, but that's the old camera for you.

Running (Commute) 27:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Easy run in the dark and mud. Bulletdog was wiped out from the heat of the 11AM run, and lagged a bit. She needs a rest day.

Running (Commute +) 55:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

About 50% ice on the way down, but only 20% on the way back. The non-ice bits were soft sticky mud.

BZdog and I ran to work, and on the way home met Bash and Bulletdog for a romp home through the mud.

Running (Commute) 50:00 [2]

Commute went from 70% glare ice on the way down to about 50% on the way back, with the difference turning to soft mud over frozen ground. Almost time to retire the icebugs.

Sunny spring day, and I needed to test the 'bent bike before Moab.

My knee was a little dicey after the skiing yesterday, but not bad on the bike.

Bash and I rode the paved Humber trail from the North end near Finch and 427 down to the lake and back. Some quick bits, some road diversion, some slow bits with lots of pedestrians.

We met STORM and H on one of the seedier road bits, and paced him for the last 10K to the lake. The dude's running sub 5 min/kms on his long slow training runs!

Great day to be out. Beats the heck out of the trainer!

Saturday Mar 10, 2012 #

Running (Being dragged) 5:00 [4]

Out for a gentle hike with the hounds. We were on the upper side of Raspberry hill, while unbeknownst to me, Bash was returning along the bottom. Bulletdog found the trail and took off after the Spike-cross prints, while Bazingadog turned the hike into this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpoKdPNM10M but without wheels.

I had to run like crazy to avoid being schlepped on my face.
10 AM

XC Skiing 1:49:14 [3] 19.37 km (10.6 kph) +471m

Ski at Highlands with Goose and Coach LD. Surprisingly good condtions, given that it's mud season back home. Goose had me working legs-only on the back stretch to try and eliminate the Beaverslap in my stride.
1 PM

XC ski-Skate (Skate) 25:00 [3] 6.0 km (14.4 kph) +29m

A little Skate with Goose up the S-climb, but my knee was feeling it so I just did the yellow trail and back.

Friday Mar 9, 2012 #

Running 50:00 [3]

Long fast trail run- fail.

Lots of bare ground around our house, so I thought I'd take the dogs for a long loop of Palgrave East and West.

Some bare trail, but mostly stupid-slippery. My icebugs might as well have been ball bearing-impregnated banana peels in places. 75lbs of solid muscle aka Bazingadog dragging back, sliding out and trying to loop around my legs on leash doesn't help either. Both dogs had their legs slide out a few times, and BZdog slid down one hill on his butt. Much like this, but without padding or control.

Pulled the plug way early, and I had to sit on Bazingadog's neck at one point when he tried to drag me at full power off through the forest after deer. Sigh.

Cycling (Trainer) 1:40:00 [3]

Good warmup, then spin with Bash to the Rides- Hill Country DVD. Some long hard climbs, some solid tempo sections and a few sprints. Total sweat-fest, even in our chilly basement.

Pouring rain, howling winds and soft mud everywhere, so I got out the tiara and drove to work.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Foot/kneehab, 10+20+40+35 pushups, 12+10+7 pull-ups, workout #3 + some KB work.

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [3]

Warm-up, then some hard 1-min intervals, a bit of tempo and cooldown.

Running (Commute) 28:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Weird day. Short-sleeves, windy, wet and wild out there.
Lots of rivers of melting snow, deep slush pools and icy slopes with the odd squishy mud section. I had to drag Bazingadog past icy bits, interesting smells of melting stuff, blowing garbage bins etc. so not a great run. We took a less forested route.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [2]

Run home in the dark on trails groomed by Mother Nature's Zamboni. Bazingadog was all over the place again, making it extra challenging.

Tuesday Mar 6, 2012 #

Note

Posted the vid from our trip to Skoki with Carbon and her Offset.

Turns out the waterproof GoPro case blocks the audio in the first few seconds, but otherwise it came out OK. Watch for the yard-sale crash while telemarking on skinny skis!

Longer daylight is letting me take the hilly Pond route home.
Bazingadog and I met Mike P and his pooch who just got porcupined in the same spot as BZdog did in November.

Note- knee's a bit sore, and some sore muscles from quicker running at Thomass.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Orienteering race 41:00 [5]

Tiny Thomass time- Sudden tract
Started with a prologue loop and hung with the leaders, but it was fast for me.
I got to CP6 just behind Pat-hetic, Mick and Bender, but took a different route in the Matrix to make my own choices (and errors)- C,D,E,B. Met Hammer before E, and got chased down by Mick and Pat by B.

Leaving the box I forgot to flip my map and went to A instead of 8. No biggie (I just went out to 8 and back) but it let Bender and Hammer get away, and allowed Pat and Mick to catch up to me by 11. I lost my glasses there, and after a brief search I didn't have the wheels to stay with them, even with my 2-handicap advantage. Got passed by Sergei too, 10th overall.
Good course in interesting terrain.

Saturday Mar 3, 2012 #

Note

All stoked to to SMT today, but freezing rain and 100kph winds when the alarm went at 5:20AM defeated my resolve for the drive to Hamilton to run in this mess. Shelburne declared a state of emergency, but we just lost power briefly.

Paddlng (erg) 20:00 [2]

Warmup spin on the Erg.
