Note

Another chapter in the ongoing saga that is Tim's back.

I had an appointment with a new clinic today and it was interesting to say the least. First impression of this place was really not good. The place looked really run down, had closed off sections that I couldn't tell were under construction or just falling apart.

In the examination room waiting for the Dr. there was garbage on the floor and it actually left me feeling concerned.

The discussion with the Dr. went much better. I always find it really hard to explain everything to them and it was the same there. Everything changed when I could show her my MRI results. I think then she got it. Her words: "You have a really bad back". Tear in my disc that is leaking fluid and slowly getting worse, inflammation around the disc which can pinch/squeeze the nerve. She was skeptical I'd ever get back to where I was 5-10 years ago.

This clinic specializes in pain management, so that's part of the challenge because I'm not in pain most of the time, just discomfort, until I aggravate the back and then I'm in pain. She talked about a few things she could do, which were all pretty drastic (epidural, burn off the nerves, etc), but in the end she recommended we shouldn't do any of these. All of the options fell into 2 categories. 1. they'd be temporary and not a permanent solution, and their effectiveness would decrease with each treatment. 2. They'd be permanent, but they might limit my ability to do what I want to do. The one positive was she felt that I was doing as well as I am because I'm in such good shape. If I was overweight and inactive I'd probably be a lot worse.

In the end, she recommended I focus on my physio and see where that can get me to. I can reach out to her if it gets worse. She also suggested swimming

This whole discussion left me feeling pretty bummed. Luckily Grain and Grit was around the corner and it was a sunny day. I walked around the corner to pick up some beers to bring home and decided to have a small glass on the patio just to unwind.
