Tested slicks on the mountain bike. I'll use this for commuting until I figure somethign else out. I had to buy oil for my truck anyway, so this short blast to the gas station was a perfect excuse for a shakeout.

Does lawn mowing count? It's a solid walk for 90 minutes. I think it should count.

Adventure Race race 6:23:00 [5] *** 30.0 mi (12:46 / mi)
spiked:3/11c slept:5.0 weight:192lbs

ARGH. I haven't DNF'd an adventure race since 2006. Many things went wrong:

* Completely botched first control. I took the wrong trail and went around a forsaken lake (off o map), for a time loss of 45 minutes.

Oddly, I then nailed 3 of the other 4 controls, and only made a minor error on the other.

Then, by the time we got to the second foot o course, we were too far behind time to do anything but get the obvious hilltop one, before racing to the paddle.

Biking over railroad tracks was very fun. Full suspension for the win.

Then the most disastrous part - the paddle back. Billed as "one hour" for decent paddlers, we just could not get moving and finished the course beyond the allotted time. It was frustrating with 45 minutes to go knowing that there was nothing we could do. 3.5 mph versus 3.3....it wasn't going to make a difference. ARGH.

I think they should've been more conservative on their suggested travel times. It's hard to estimate on a canoe, especially given that it was up current, and the boat had to be walked for several hundred yards in a narrow part.

Even if I hadn't screwed up the first control, that meant we would've grabbed two of the optional ones at 2nd foot o, and we still would've misjudged the required canoe time and failed.

ARGH ARGH ARGH

EDIT: Only 13 of 55 teams finished as ranked teams. We are listed in 14th since of late finishers, we had the most points.
