So I think it takes me about a day to be at peace with a race blow up (Rage....Spring Mill).

QuickRoute

#1 - Okay, took trail, broke off a tiny bit early but right to it
#2 - Excecuted mostly the route I wanted. This inspired false confidence. :-)
#3 - I thought for sure, had I veered off onto the peninsula, that I would notice the "uncrossable" swamp. NOPE! If it there's, and it gets your feet wet, I'd love to know about it because I don't recall a thing! I should've noticed the distance, and I did, but recovery was slow so I looped around. Nearly ten minutes lost, which would set up later disaster. Lesson: exit more cautiously!
#4 - Wandered a bit, but mostly did what I wanted to, hesitated heading towards the gully/swamp before the N trail, confirmed it, and away we go.
#5 - no trouble on #5, bu I think I took a slightly different line than those who hit the unmapped gully
#6 - Trails for safety, but I almost blew except the yellow height of the bag made it very visible.
#7 - end of the road. First third was fine. Around the swamp, up north of the reentrant to the trail, trail down to the jump, but I blew the jump, thought I hit my trail, but ended up on the other trail. Easy running though!

I eventually realized I was on the wrong trail, but I figured I'd loop around, no trouble. Then I made my largest blunder - I specifically ignored the reentrant I wanted to jump up due west of #7 thinking it was the one SW of 7. So I exited too much north, but not north enough to hit #11, and couldn't relocate. I am a terrible judge of distance, should've checked up immediately and went back to the swamp. Note to self! I was specifically scared of being lost NE of #11, knowing it would be super difficult to relocate, and sure enough, it happened.

Since I started so late, I didn't have time to do a mega relocate, which is unfortunate as I had done much of the distance I ended up doing.

I'll try again Saturday and see how it goes.

Note
(rest day)

I guess we'll call it a rest day, but more like a "I didn't get up early, then I was too lame to get my crap together and get out the door when I got home from the kid's practice." Although I sure ate like I was going to exercise. Just in case I wonder a month from now why I'm still fat. :|

No wife = time to try a speed run.

Half mile warm up under 15:00/mile.

Then per mile:

7:50
7:24
7:12

I didn't feel like I had more to give at the end. PR is around 6:40/mile so time to start sneaking up the distance on the aerobic base building runs. Or add a few more per week. Or both!

I have a hard time believing my hr dropped to 110 - not sure if a contact issue or all the bikes and runs mean time for a new battery?

Started with light drizzle...then it rained a bit, but stopped before Joy. Very wet and muddy. Saw many deer. Was very glad to get out. Still trying to keep it easy on the knee. I will end the injury status as there's no pain currently, then try to sneak up on the bigger volume/intensity.

Forgot to shut off the Garmin, so I trimmed the track, but that seems to lose the heartrate. Not sure of the best way to do that.

Heartrate was 15x for the first mile of the jog, then settled into the 130s. Not sure why it does this sometimes.

New route for us, but there's more traffic at 8 pm than there is at 4:30 am. Not sure I liked that. The road itself was good for running, just a little too busy. I like my dirt roads empty, especially at night.

I did use my MagicShine to get two cars to dim their brights.

Curious as to the heart rate.

Does not look so great - felt like hard work, but was relatively low. In the boat, it's much faster at say, 130 than 100 bpm, which makes sense, but I can only hold that for ten to fifteen minutes tops. It'd be great to get that more like a bike/run where 90-120 minutes of 130+ is possible.

I think pre o meet prep should include: not staying up to midnight looking at bicycles on the internet; also, maybe better lunches on the way to the meet.

Note

Silver Lake map scale is 1:12500 (Igor's guess, iirc), verified by:

* Scanning at 200 dpi, loading into Purple Pen assuming 1:12500, and measuring from the Silver Lake dead end to the entrance off Dexter-Townhall.

* Measuring the same distance in Google Earth

Discrepancy using that method was 5 m over ~2210 m.

Tough Lew Kidder course.

#1 - Figured I was in the right place, but couldn't make sense of where to go next

#3, misread the "hammerhead" spur and veered a bit, but corrected off the indistinct trail, phew

#5 - tried to pro line it without a bearing and misread the contours. Also misread the clue sheet and looked for a rock pile instead of a clearing. Figured once I hit the trail I may as well shortcut the powerlines back and then use the strong trail corner. It started off runnable - some sort of game trail. Then it got thick, but I felt committed and tried to push through, collecting pounds of burrs. Pretty easy from that trail corner!

#6 - had a good line going until 100 m to go, then choked and ignored compass, luckily tripped on the fence and used that to relocate. ARGH

#7 - missed west, but the ridge was subtle. Happy I caught it and doubled back and correctly guessed I missed west.

#8 - I had a good run going until I somehow missed it. I thought I went up the west reentrant, but gps says otherwise. So I just didn't see it?? ARGH. I was flying for the first half. Fun swamp shortcut was mid thigh!

#9 - seemed short of the center of the circle, and that matches up well with gps.

#10 - I lucked out and approached from the road, so I nearly tripped over it en route to the marked reentrant, so I suffered no time penalty for the misplaced flag.

#11 - took via #12 to make sure I could find 12. It worked! Saw Mark V and tried to hold him off.

#13 - the clearing looked wet, so I fought around it.

#14 - I may have sandbagged just a tiny bit to pad my finishing leg. :-)

Biked up to my bike shop to get a couple blue cable ferrules, since one fell off and I knocked one off on the way over. Cut through Island Lake. It's only 9 and 1/4 there, so this could be done more regularly.

It was very odd to bike during daylight hours!

Bike home from bike shop via Island Lake. Did all of yellow, and a chunk of blue, but I was getting behind schedule so I skipped out of the last bit from Spring Mill to the Bishop entrance.

So thirty miles today. I started off easy, but started to push a bit out of habit towards the end. Kept out of the big ring as a token nod to knee preservation. Hopefully it likes what happened today and we can get back to more of it.

Kind of embarrassing. Things were going okay, just a slow route to #4 because I mismarked the overprinting for the Halloween thing and came from the east. Wandered a bit to #5, no big deal. Lost a couple minutes in the flattish terrain around #7.

Then I got through the swamp headed to #9 and it all fell apart. Didn't follow a good bearing to the trail, misread where I was, and went to the south, realized a mistake, but instead of continuing around (didn't know where I was), I cut up through the swamp, picked up a ton of prickers (chest still red from abrasion!), and then tried to make up time exiting #9, but just completely disintegrated.

I only recall crossing one of the three mapped fences. ARGH

I honestly can't believe I recovered at that point. 10 minutes lost?

Lousy but effective route to #11.

Nearly killed by #13 - three minutes after I went down the west side of the creek, a giant tree top crashed to the ground on that side as I was headed north on the east side. Yowser!

Imperfect route to #14, but oh well. Lots of competition for fast finish.

I thought I would be more accurate but slow this fall, building fitness towards the spring. But I seem to be able to move mostly quick enough, but still make too many and too big of mistakes. I'm getting worse as the season goes on! Not a good sign

All with no compass, as I am a poor planner. The scary part is I tracked some nice bearings without one!

Funniest mistake - I streamered a depression, wondered why I hadn't seen the small one first, then walked out of it and into the real depression. I had to go back and remove my tape. Whoops!

Knee discomfort off and on. :|

Every last one of them seems entirely too easy. Granted, I did it in the middle of the afternoon. I think there will be quite a learning experience; hopefully participants give a good debrief on the pros and cons of various control sites. I expect some will turn out harder than anticipated. Live and learn.

I was unable to find one feature, but the green stripes are pretty green and I had no desire to muck through them. Nor do I want to send my participants into that mess, so I relocated to a less scratchy area.

1 mile paved @ 3.6 mph
2.5 mile mostly dirt @ 5.4 mph
0.5 mile half and half @ 6.1 mph
1 mile paved @ 3.9 mph
