Note

Frequently appearing at MI races, our favorite IL adventure racer, Drake White, appears to be the token male on a team at Gold Rush Mother Lode.

Note

Purple Pen tip: Start the control auto numbering at some unusably high value (eg, 200). Then when you finalize your layouts, you can walk through and renumber the courses to your whim (eg, 31, 32, 33, etc.) without hitting any collisions.
5 PM

I almost didn't get this in.

Sooner or later I'll learn that I should just get up at 5, do something, and then rest easy knowing it's in the bag.

Slept in like a lazy git, but did get night o permit dropped off in person. Didn't meet park super, but did leave donuts.

Lest any of you worry about my technical skills deteriorating...fear not; I included some Island Lake Blue.

Note

So one idea I had is that I didn't take my 17' plastic kayak out at all this year. Perhaps I could sell it and use it to fund a nice packraft, since that'd be required for Untamed New England if that came together, plus then it would offer opportunities to go bikerafting, which sounds interesting but then I'd have to be ambitious enough to do it. The idea of biking to a put in, going somewhere, and then biking home without any out-and-back or shuttling component is intriguing. Or you could lock the bike up when terrorizing chains of local lakes.
7 PM

Walking 24:00 [0] 1.35 mi (17:46 / mi)

It was a big weekend and hopefully tomorrow is also big. Too much stuff to do tonight, bleh!

Whatever is stuck in my foot shows no interest in leaving.

Teased wife by taking the 2nd most rugged trail and using it for a warmup. "Are we going to run on this??"

Nice jog around the wide trails south of Hammel in Huron Meadows. The tree canopy shielded us from the light rain. Lots of little ups and downs.

Cooling down on the way back to the car. Not a single other trail user sighted!

Argh, forgot to check two yellow spots.

Otherwise a great time with Barbara, tidying up those last few points.

I have to QR soon, as one reentrant confuses me. Doh!

Great course by Cooper at Bishop Lake.

I started off too fast to 1. No big deal.

Then I messed up en route to #2 - didn't hold a good bearing through medium green, and failed to reconcile features when crossing trails. Ended up on Blue, no biggie, but then mussed the first take, and had to come up from underneath, amateur hour!

Went mostly straight to 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, crossed the swamp for 8 but didn't know where. Almost missed 9 to the north, but noticed climb and stopped. Minor trouble exiting #9, as a guy claimed the trail to the east was his. Whoops! I went back and took the other trail, then maybe accidentally ended up on "his" trail again, but jumped into thick green before I could be spotted.

Murray Lake trail jumping to #10, then a MUCH easier time getting to #11 than at night!!

Bobbled a little at #12 because I didn't aim off, but I followed Shane and Alex backwards to it. ;)

Debated road to 13, but ended up just skipping along Torn Shirt. Hit the ride between marshes NE of 14 farther south, but it worked out okay. West out of #14 to Torn Shirt, then picked up the road and back in for 15, hopefully hammered well to the finish.

Good times!

Other than the horrendous 1-2, it makes me happy.

4 PM

Orienteering 19:15 intensity: (37 @0) + (8:09 @1) + (5:49 @2) + (1:13 @3) + (1:07 @4) + (2:20 @5) * 1.24 mi (15:31 / mi) +25m 14:36 / mi

Cleaning up a few yellow bags north of the start. Nice trails; may have to hike them sometime.

Orienteering 41:59 intensity: (18:32 @0) + (19:20 @1) + (1:48 @2) + (1:32 @3) + (29 @4) + (18 @5) *** 2.05 mi (20:29 / mi) +75m 18:23 / mi
ahr:103 max:183 spiked:5/5c shoes: IceBugs

Green/red control pickup, different lines to each point which was fun and good training. I had no zip left and this took too long!

Deal with myself: If I clean up the basement and garage, I can get a cx or road bike.

Victory Part I!

Twelve years in the making. I have always wondered what a full pull would be like - my house to Dearborn and back. I had a manager who was a big roadie who lived marginally east and he said he used to do it often, but he was a beast with like a 2:30-2:40 marathon, and a resting heart rate in meetings in the 40 range. He traveled to the Alps to ride his bike.

Dear daughter was at an overnight camp, so I didn't have to drop her off, and my wife was picking her up today to go to some "hey, I'm selling MLM stuff!" party. Game on!

I meant to leave at 4:30, but then I started to talk myself out of it. It was cold, it looked like rain, it's a long way, I could maybe do something else in the afternoon instead....finally as 5 approached, I just grabbed my junk and charged.

Ride in went well. Traffic was still light so I could take paved roads.

If I had any idea I was going to end up at 2:05, I would've tried harder and put down 1:59:59. Next time!
3 PM

Biking 2:31:14 intensity: (5:45 @0) + (1:12:28 @1) + (1:05:33 @2) + (7:28 @3) 34.66 mi (13.8 mph) +193m

Victory Part II

I knew the return trip would be tougher - eight hours of work, higher temps, more elevation, and more traffic would push me towards dirt roads.

But I didn't quite expect 25 more minutes!

In my defense, 5-10 minutes were emergency calls about the location of the Potbelly in Canton, and how to work some clamp handles.

Five Mile felt like it climbed FOREVER. Also, it was graded and quite loose. I started to drag a bit.

Getting onto paved Seven Mile was fantastic.

Woo woo! I should do this again sometime.
