Missed you out there BiT! Poor Simpy always seems so lost without you!

It's great that you helped out like that. Teamwork. It's key.
Hope you can make the next one!

Who carried Simpy's gear for him?

Hopefully I can make the next one. What is funny is I cared less about missing the race, and more about missing the chance to socialize. :)

Next time Simpy should just dial you in on his mobile and put you on speaker phone. Maybe a Skype video so you can watch too and tell him when he's going too slow. Remote team orienteering. It should be its own sport.

Awesome idea 1L, ha ha ha :-)

BiT, bring the kids next time! A number of O-Dad's out there this time!

1L, sign me up. LOL.

FunRun, I am not sure I am ready to release my monsters on the AR world quite yet. : ) Although one of my little guys said he wants to do a race, so I will have to figure out how to get him out for something soon. Maybe one race he can carry Simpy's gear....

The Chase (the O-Cup in Hamilton in two weeks) has a separate kids' race course.

Try it, BiT. I figure if I want to keep doing more AR type stuff as they get older, I have to figure out how to make it a fun outing for the family. I dragged Mrs. Wilberto and our 7 & 5 yr old out and they did the novice course. It was a team effort: one got to hold the compass, one got to hold the whistle and Mrs. W handled the map. Not sure they used the compass, but they seemed to have a good time and allowed me to race. The Gators had post-race compass cookies, which were popular with them as well. Next up is to get my son to actually start looking at the map. I'm hopeful that the ARK program grows eastward in the near future...

When I first read Bash's comment, I was debating it, but I am not sure the race in Hamilton is the right timing for my guys. Long drive to and from Whitby, and I worry that cold weather could also factor in to their enjoyment of it. I want to make sure their first race makes a good impression, and was thinking of something closer to the spring. Also I will need to free myself up for their first event, as it wouldn't likely be something their Mom would want to do with them while I went off racing...hehe. But I may still consider Hamilton...could be a fun family day with the boys and a social outing....

I agree it would be great to have more of these types of things out on the east side. Part of the reason I don't do a lot of the Thomass races is the drive to get to the event is longer than the event itself.

I don't think it would be too late for the Toronto club to consider adding a kids' race to their January O-Cup. Maybe you could petition 1L. I hear she knows some people.

We also have a hard time with the drive:race ratio but the socializing time is also a factor. In the last couple of years, we've tried to choose restaurants for AR lunch after the race.

Noted and I'll make the suggestion. It would be good to get the wee ones hooked early - I mean - bring the familiy for a great bonding experience.
Seriously, I will suggest it. Thanks for the idea!

1L, if a course setter is looking for some ideas, I'm sure he/she could chat with Pat-hectic and get a copy of The Chase kids' course map. When Pat-hectic did this in Caledon last year, the kids' race was largely marked but it was still gnarly and lots of fun. (On trail, off-trail, steep hills, etc.) Kids with good orienteering skills entered the regular Thomass race and took their handicap so the kid-specific race was suitable for newbies. I'm not sure what the philosophy of the other three kids' O-Cup races will be this year but Pat-hectic will likely be working behind the scenes on all of them.
