Time is not even bad if you consider I hit the button then waited for a lull in traffic, so a couple minutes behind by the first light.

Flirted with an hour, but it is a battle to dig back from that stop sign-riddled opening 12 mph through the D. Fun though!!

Things I will not mention to my wife:

Car stopped on a side street for their stop sign, but then proceeded to drive out in front of me with absolutely zero indication they were aware of my existence. 3-5 mph faster and I could have smacked the car with a hand. Should I invest in an air horn? thinking_emoji.png

Car considered right hooking me for an exit from Hines, but then thought better of it. Just some dramatic braking. Probably would have been clear had they gone for it.

No wonder the security guard who chats with me while getting ready in the parking lot said to stay safe!

It felt like a tiny bit of speed power was back. Woo hoo!

A great day to watch groundhogs - they were out in force. Adorable critters.

Almost dodged the rain. I waited out the front wave at work, but got some downpour in the last two miles. Fine, good character building, nice temp to be rained on.

The gentle Hand Of Hines pushed me...it was so oddly easy.

Powerless climb up Hines.

If I were half as fast as much faster as the gap between the people that pass me and me...adventure races would be a lot easier!

Not too bad, until the final stretch, where I ran out of oomph.

The shop had a backlog of A/C repairs, so I could do this again tomorrow unless I do some clever work from home vs. work splitting.

It's been too long! I intended to do the round trip, but didn't get enough sleep last night. This may have been for the best anyway.

Time is not even horrible given the headwind (thankfully I went with just one pannier), and a brief delay for a train.

At one point, I got passed by a couple, passed them back, they passed back and then didn't pull away, so I passed them back again.

Noooooo flat again leaving work. And I haven't stocked worked with any kind of useful pump at the office, nor did I acquire a C02 system yet, so I pumped until bored and rode soggy back home. So between that, the security guard chatting, one of the other supervisors reminding me about the dead body found near the office recently, etc. it was not the speediest process to get home.

Tiny hole on the non rim side near the valve. I couldn't find anything in the tire. I don't know when I got it - early would explain the molasses feeling, but I don't remember hitting anything, although since it seems like in Wayne County the #1 hobby is throwing glass out of one's car window, anything is possible and maybe I did.

I tried stopping at the Segway / bike rental place for some of their "free air", but the employee had "never seen one of those before", with "those" being the rare and unique presta valve that only 100% of the roadie bikes that roll past the shop would be be sporting.

May pick up a Schwalbe Marathon Plus (can take a thumb tack and not get to the tube) at REI on my food spree later this week. Else the taper starts early for WT!

Favorable winds and/or the training is paying off? Hard to complain about a sub hour cruise at sub maximal effort when AP says that it's:

92°F (feels like 97°F)
Humidity: 47%, Winds: 9mph

I see that optical HR is somewhat more decorative than functional.

Ride mostly felt good, and I think this ends up near the top of the heap.

Damp at start but no rain. I should still install fenders and frame save.

Police were parked slightly hidden by a bridge near Stark and easily picked off one from the throng. The speeder didn't even look to be going that fast, noted for caution/cruise control setting.

ahr:137 max:195 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

I quickly tired of working the mini pump, so I rolled whatever....2x? psi up to Plymouth. Ride quality was fantastic, but perhaps not my most efficient trip back up the Middle Rouge.

Coworker walked out as I was suiting up for the ride, and I forgot to use HRM.

Otherwise nice, pleasantly overcast in places.

Barely over an hour if you take out the train!

ahr:118 max:144 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Back home. So hungry! I tried to stop at the Segway rental place for a candy bar, but they were closed.

Time wasn't terrible, considering tiredness.

I saw two separate cx practice sessions. One guy had flags up and some little barriers to hop. Another group was ripping around on the grass lapping some copses.

Biking 1:04:29 intensity: (49:38 @1) + (11:14 @2) + (3:11 @3) + (26 @4) 15.75 mi (14.7 mph) +125m
ahr:133 max:173 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Not too bad, traffic was tolerable near work, even through a mild draft when I first got on Hines, and all the intersections were cooperative. Exiting Hines, I came up to Plymouth Road to find some sort of multi fire truck situation, not sure what was up, but my direction was getting through so I wiggled around it. Then I found a new shortcut through some parking lots near the house.

Steps up to the library must be higher than I thought.

I biked too slowly to snag John Wick 2, looks like Passengers instead.

ahr:118 max:152 slept:6.0 weight:214.2lbs shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Nice ride, with a reserved effort, hoping to do work in the morning.

One "sidewalks are foooooorrrrr...." by a guy who voluntarily turned his car onto a park road where he will, if he goes far enough, encounter at least two separate 30+ pelotons. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLOLLOLOLL

ahr:139 max:177 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

I worked hard, but couldn't get to an hour. Wind wasn't cooperative, nor were lights, plus I should be faster.

Oooof. More character-building headwind.

I was trying not to eat back exercise calories, but I think on double bike days, I'm going to have to do 2/3rds of one of the rides to stay sane.

Hines was unusually hot-headed today, with honking, brake checking, a big bird flipping. Thankfully the only thing directed at me was some poorly rolled coal.

Biking (commute sans panniers) 1:00:51 intensity: (1:01 @0) + (42:29 @1) + (15:51 @2) + (1:30 @3) 15.78 mi (15.6 mph) +127m
ahr:131 max:155 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Take off my overstuffed panniers and the LHT is like a whole new bike. Mostly favorable lights and not much wind. Very light sprinkling the last half mile.

3rd fastest time

5 PM

Biking 1:19:39 intensity: (3:26 @1) + (1:10:25 @2) + (3:57 @3) + (1:14 @4) + (37 @5) 15.7 mi (11.8 mph) +134m
ahr:146 max:192 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Hines open, lots of cars. One bike caught up at a light and we remarked on the loud argument in the car in front of us.

More traffic than I wanted on Plymouth Road/Main Street, so I cut over one block too soon and lost five minutes to a train. Ooops!

Wednesday May 3, 2017 »

4 PM

Biking 1:05:13 intensity: (28 @0) + (57:01 @1) + (7:44 @2) 15.78 mi (14.5 mph) +126m
ahr:124 max:148 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Swinging commute: I drove in today to the non-standard office for our "mini offsite" all day thing, then popped over to my office to park my car and bike home.

Tomorrow, I will race in and try to make the recently announced 8 am start, which will be tight as I usually eat more like 7, and it's ~an hour in, plus shower, plus venue change.

Friday Apr 28, 2017 »

4 PM

Biking 1:18:56 intensity: (19 @0) + (4:04 @1) + (1:12:12 @2) + (2:21 @3) 16.53 mi (12.6 mph) +144m
ahr:147 max:154 slept:6.0 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Hard to even consider a PR when you can't leave your building grounds for a couple minutes for traffic! Not that I was going for one anyway with the big weekend ahead between scouting and Haven.

I wonder if anyone has ever run the various little rapids sections of the Middle Rouge.

Friday Apr 21, 2017 »

Biking 1:18:17 intensity: (4 @0) + (51:03 @1) + (26:36 @2) + (34 @3) 15.72 mi (12.0 mph) +135m
ahr:135 max:157 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Back home. Hines was still closed, but two cars drove it anyway, and more bikes than this morning. Much less water, I was able to stay on the road the whole time. Brief train delay in Plymouth.

Not as much zip, but this was typical before.

Thursday Nov 17, 2016 »

5 PM

Biking 1:24:07 intensity: (34 @0) + (30:29 @1) + (8:08 @2) + (12:17 @3) + (14:56 @4) + (17:43 @5) 15.78 mi (11.3 mph) +117m
ahr:153 max:211 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Got in late...stayed late...didn't think about Hines closure for lightest.

Hines was closed. I elected to ride the MUP instead of the road, and hoped that I could just pour on my charm if any authority figure questioned me.

I was doing well, then just before the end....fireworks. A lot of fireworks. And a Wayne County Parks truck under the bridge I'd need to go through. So I did the only sensible thing, and stopped to enjoy the fireworks. Good show! When they finished, I just filtered in among the pedestrians and then slipped out the entrance to lightfest, and enjoyed a car-free cruise up to the A2 trail.

ahr:158 max:211 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Leisurely back home.

So my problem seems to be:

I can simmer as much as I want. This is a light, crappy, slow simmer, but enough to not be embarrassed if I don't go to a champs.

If I try to get any kind of boil, even light, hr spikes up, power collapses.

Hoping general fitness clears it up. Old teammate Jeff had similar, except I do recover a bit, whereas he popped up and stayed up. He fixed it with long slow distance.

In reviewing Peach Mountain, most errors were preceded by egregious hr spikes - perhaps they are wrecking my brain. Second lap, only one spike, and nearly spot on. Not a coincidence, and I think not a coincidence just because I was generally slow - it was easy mode.

ahr:129 max:155 shoes: Long Haul Trucker

Tuesdays around 6 pm must be fast bike night on Hines. I passed no one, and got destroyed left and ride. Packs, solos, whoosh.

Experimented with the Riverside exit off Hines - nice and sleepy.

Well, I did not know that would be possible so soon!

Helped that I tried to reel in a cyclist right after getting onto Hines. I couldn't, for a long time. Finally tried to make a pass stick, but she was too fit, and caught me within a half mile, so we chatted until her turnaround. Nice lady.

Hammered through the Old Village when I saw the possibilities.

Imagine if you didn't have to do 12 mph average on Paul in Detroit.

This was glorious!

My dream come true, since pitching a move to Plymouth.

Then classes got in the way. But today it finally happened: I biked home from work. On my new-to-me very lightly used Surly Disc Trucker, a steel touring bike. I don't have any of the stuff for it yet, like racks, fenders, panniers, etc. but it was good enough to get home with a light backpack.

I felt so good I did the slightly longer route through the Old Village, rather than the 50' of grass to Plymouth Road.

Pictures are of Wilcox Lake, with Wilcox coincidentally being my m-i-l's mother's maiden name. Not sure if related or not yet.

Tomorrow I can ride in and rinse off, and then I have access to my car.

The Trucker might make a MarkVT race race bike, since it's light and rolls fast.

Woooooooooo hooooooooooo!
