Trek 1
I am a huge worrywart before a race and this race was no expectation. Drove up Friday night and set up tents in the dark waiting for the team. Got a call informing me that JP would arrive by 7:15am. The rest of the team arrived by 10:00pm. After a quick chat and some minor gear prep we hit the sack.
6:00am rolls around and I am up doing my final prep and cracking the whip. JP arrives on time and we hit registration. I sit down with the maps and leave the rest of the prep to the team.
After the briefing we pile onto the bus with our biking and trekking gear and get shipped off to the start. JP and I review the course and discuss strategy. We agreed to leave our biking gear at the starting area collect CP20 return for our gear, drop at CP1 and then persuse the rest of the Trek 1 CPs. We elected to take the trail route in and were in the middle of the heard (and maybe going a little too hard for our fitness). Into the bush and we come out a little East of the CP when we hit the trail and head west for the punch. We then took the trail back to the road, got our bike stuff and kept going. We stuck to the trails and picked up the remaining CPs. JP ended up tweaking his ankle on a rock which caused us to slow down. JP pushed hard despite his injury but was a little apprehensive when he started the bike.
Bike 1
A fairly straightforward commute to the next trek. Kept the pace to a manageable 18-20kmh as we were concerned about burning out in the heat. We were passed by a pair riding monster trucks (29ers) and traded places with a solo female but otherwise were alone on the road.
Trek 2
Into the TA and bad things start to happen. JP’s ankle is causing major issues and it was hard for him to unclip. We started out on the trek with a talk which turns into a team discussion 100m from the TA. JP can’t move at a meaningful pace and we agree to leave him at the TA and then continue as an unranked team of 3. We spike the closest CP and then head aback out to the road. Follow the road just past the scout camp and charge into the bush. Not sure what happened here but somehow we missed the trail I wanted and we continued south a little too far skipping 2 CPs with the intention of picking them up on the way back. We hit the hydro lines and go up the hill picking up a CP on the way to the “back” of the trek to get the furthest CP. Back along the road and onto the trails again at the hydro lines and grab the last CPs before returning to the TA.
At the TA we are informed that JP was taken back to HQ and would join us for the paddle. The original plan was for him to do the bike legs with us and not do the treks.
Bike 2
Another uneventful commute to the next trek with a few nice hills in between along a marked route.
Trek 3
The final trek at “The Farm”. The strategy here was to avoid using the new single track for fear that it wasn’t going to necessarily be easy to find or follow as the trails are fairly new. By this time the heat was really hurting us and I was struggling to stay cool and keep moving a quick pace so we ended up walking most of the trek. In hindsight we easily could have bushwhacked from CP42 to CP44 but we kept to the major trail and handrailed the fence.
Bike 3
The heat was really sucking at this point but we were able to maintain 18kph on the road about 10-15kph on the double track. The double track was my favourite section of the race. It was quick with some minor technical sections but nothing crazy. We got to CP50 with a handful of Trek and Elite teams. I saw a few younger teams splayed out where they could find clear ground, I assumed they were hit hard by the heat. When we got to CP4 we saw an ambulance pull away with a Trek racer. DM and DOC grabbed some water and we pressed on. At this point we weren’t sure if we were going to make the canoe cut off and since we were already NOR it wasn’t a huge deal if we missed it. On the way to CP53 we pass a number of teams and play leap frog with others.
Canoe 1
We return to HQ a few minutes after the first cut off time. We look around for the injured JP and find him hobbling with a wrapped up ankle. Turns out he either broke it or damaged ligamints and his day is over. DM sits down near one of our canoes and DoC and I agree to finish the course as a pair. We put the boat in and head off in a counter clockwise route to grab the short course paddle check points. I refill by water bottles and we both enjoy some cool water for the first time of the day. We make good speed in the boat and pass a few more teams. The paddle from CP62 to the finish was a little annoying as we kept pulling to starboard, I think this was because we were boardside to the shallow waves and we were falling off the backside of the crests. We see a trek team a few 100m’s ahead of us and use them as motivation to push hard and finish the paddle.
Finish
We finished in approximately 7hours and 51ish minutes. Things could have been better but we were happy with our finish. I tip my hat for Dm for finishing the bike/trek part of the course, he was hurting but stuck it out to finish his second race. DoC as always is amazingly fit and keeps us going.
Due to the heat I was struggling to eat real food so my nutrition for the day was mostly maltodextrin in my water and a few gels.
As one would expect Storm did an awesome job managing the race course and a big thanks tot he volunteers!!!!
