UCMS - a little light training with a couple of students on the school o' team. Snow covered ground in most places, a couple spots still a foot deep; wet & muddy in other places. Raced the kids on 3 legs of about 120, 230 and 150 m with pauses in between. Gave the slowest runner a head start on legs 2 and 3. Spent the rest of our time looking at route gadget from the last event at this coming weekend's event site.

Possum Creek
Green course set by dersu
A grueling race in snow averaging 10-12 inches deep (25-30 cm), with a few drifts to twice that depth. Thick vegetation also cost considerable time, and I nearly gave up hope of ever finding a route through the fight to #4.

mapping - field checking 20:00 [1] ** 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

checking a small maze of minor trails at East Fork. Less snow here than at Possum Creek. For the most part, the mapped trails were pretty good, only a couple sections that had become indistinct.

Saturday Feb 13, 2010 #

orienteering race 57:00 [4] ***
20c weight:161lbs shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

Cliff Cave County Park (St. Louis). 20 control score-O. first place. minor bobble at #7, otherwise pretty clean.

widened the one-car path out of the driveway. With luck the next storm won't be too windy; Otherwise even a couple inches will quickly make a deep drift.

Saturday Feb 6, 2010 #

weights / strength (snow removal) 1:30:00 [3]
weight:161lbs

most of driveway had 4 to 6 inches; a few spots were blown bare but there was a long drift over a foot deep.

orienteering race 1:14:00 [3] *** 4.0 km (18:30 / km)
12c shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

This quickly became a battle of attrition. Control 3 was mis-placed and not found. Between 5 and 6 I ran off the map. The SI box at control 8 was so encrusted with ice that it was impossible to punch. Meanwhile I started off fast for the first couple controls, started to sweat and threw back my hood. Ducking under snow covered bushes, the hood & the back of my neck filled up with snow. Brr. After several falls, the light gloves I was using also were proving inadequate. In the interest of retaining all fingers for future runs and not risking hypothermia when I hit the more open, wind-swept parts of the course, I finally made the wise choice & bailed.

orienteering 40:00 [2] *** 2.0 km (20:00 / km)

control pickup. Still was difficult with wading thru deep snow and having to get thru briars and honeysuckle bushes that were weighted down with the white stuff.

Friday Feb 5, 2010 #
