orienteering 4:00:00 [1] ***
22c weight:157lbs

Course setting at East Fork. A couple minor map corrections. A little minor trail work. mostly walked, but jogged a little. Couldn't resist taking a short run after a deer (not the albino one, which I have not seen again, but I haven't been in that immediate area either), since she was going my direction.

OLOU German Ridge - steep terrain. No major mistakes, but never could get really good speed due to steepness, rocks, deadfall and greenbriar. But, a fun meet.

East Fork - checking control locations. about 6 hours in the woods total.

High point of the day was seeing a mostly albino deer. Mostly brown head and a couple brown patches on side, but otherwise almost all white. Cool. I hope lots of Flying Pig competitors will get to see the "Ghost Deer".

orienteering race 1:21:34 [5] *** 7.5 km (10:53 / km) +285m 9:08 / km

Hueston Woods. Published course length was 7.2 km, but that included connection lines going straight across uncrossable lake & out-of-bounds river. Lines adjusted to shortest allowable route bumped the length up to 7.5 km. Disappointed not to hit 10 min / km. Seemed like there was enough road running and I was working really hard the whole time, that it should have been quicker. Won the coures handily, didn't make any really big navigation mistakes, although I drifted quite a bit off my intended line on 10-11 and 11-12, which might have cost me a minute on each. Also lost up to a minute on 5 descending hill too far east and being slow to figure out that the control (foot of earth bank) was on an unmapped earthbank around the corner.

walking 10:00 [1] *

control pickup. Mostly got them from the car, just had to walk to a couple. Thanks to David Waller for a fun event! I was TIRED!

Union County MS. Set paper tags at each control. The kids mass-started 2 minutes behind me. It'll be more fun when they get good enough (and enough endurance) to have a real shot at catching me. Two of them are fast enough to outrun me in a short sprint, but for anything over a few hundred meters they don't have the stamina.

orienteering race 19:02 [5] *** 2.55 km (7:28 / km) +57m 6:43 / km
15c weight:160lbs shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

Sprint race at Forest Park - Kennedy Woods, St. Louis. Mostly a forest sprint, with a network of trails, but sometimes necessary to cut thru some medium green, so it was not super-fast.

mapping - field checking 30:00 [3] *** 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Hueston Woods. Checking new firsbee golf course. Its not yet completed and adding the detail will require some intense mapping.
The bad: Part of the course is an area of highly runnable forest with a network of trails that is often used for white / yellow. The extra paths will make it more complex for beginners to follow the main paths thru the area.
The good: Across the road, part of the course cuts through medium green and dark green areas with lots of honeysuckle, autumn olive and briars. They've removed a lot of underbrush, an old ruined fence, and the fairway paths create lots of possibilities to now navigate thru this area (which has typically been a place for a "take the road around" route choice). The new network looks like it will have very nice potential for sprint and middle use, at least at times when there are not too many frisbee golfers on the course.
There must have been close to 200 turkey vultures hanging around the lodge, with what appeared to be a few black vultures mixed in. Awesome spectacle, actually a little intimidating. It would have made a great shot for a horror movie (think "The Birds").

Tuesday Mar 2, 2010 #

mapping - field checking 4:00:00 [1] ** 8.0 km (30:00 / km)
weight:160lbs

checking control locations at East Fork and minor mapping updates. Physical level was generally pretty low, although crusty snow & soggy ground made the going pretty difficult at times.
