Intended to go look at control sites at Big Bone Lick and England Idlewild, but the rain and thunderstorms just didn't seem to want to let go of Northern Kentucky. Less than 40 miles away at my house, it remained perfect for doing yard and garden work, so I decided to put off KY until tomorrow.

Moved quite a bit of dirt, Straigthened a wall of landscaping timbers that was leaning - this required digging out enough dirt behind the wall to push the rebar-reinforced timbers back into a vertical position, hauling in fill dirt and raising the brick walkway on the low side by several inches to give support, and then backfilling behind the wall. Got maybe a third of the project finished.

yard and garden. moved a shrub and several loads of dirt, finished raising a flower bed to improve drainage and re-doing a brick border around it.

orienteering 20:00 [3] ** 2.0 km (10:00 / km)
8c weight:162lbs shoes: Icebugs

TROL training and control pickup at Mounds with Caleb, Ethan, and Jeremy Franklin.

There were 14 controls remaining in the woods from Saturday's meet. Caleb and Ethan each picked up 3 controls while I got 1 easy one that was a little farther away.

Then we did a 7 control, 2 km technical course. Caleb, Ethan, and Jeremy each started about 2 minutes apart. A couple minutes later, I took off with intent to snag controls while trying to catch up to them. Unfortunately, Ethan made a bit of a mistake and I got number 1 before he found it. Ditto for 2, 3, and 4 before I caught up to Jeremy and Caleb leaving 4. Learning that they had not seen Ethan, I backtracked but he was not to be found.

I did a little more running around and eventually found Ethan, who by that time had given up on 1, definitely located the spot for #2 (a rocky pit) and had also looked for 3.

After that, Jeremy went back to collect #7 while I went with Ethan and Caleb to collect 5 and 6. So it turned out to be a good, fun learning experience, and I was impressed that Ethan tried to find the locations for 2 and 3 even though he certainly knew that I was ahead of him and had already removed the controls.

These controls and legs were all tougher than the yellow courses that Caleb and Ethan normally run, so they did a great job.

England-Idlewild, checking middle distance control sites and doing a number of map updates.

Afterward, I checked out the Friday night fish dinner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. This looks like it will be the place to go for Friday dinner at the Pig. A fish platter for $7. Baked or fried. And several other choices as well including shrimp. Soft drink or draft beer for $1. Brownies selling Girl Scout Cookies and Middle School kids selling desserts. And a big BINGO hall with big digital screens. And cash prizes. So you can play while you eat (or go to the other hall where you don't have to listen to it).

Miami Natural Areas. A sloppy circuit of Pine and East Loops. Read the noteboard at the trailhead while cooling down. Some looney-tune had actually written (today) "Can you do something about the mud?" I bet that person has never done a lick of trail maintenance or building in his or her life. I do still smile when I read comments about the "nice signage" though. Nice to know my maps are appreciated!

"Purple" course (cross between red and blue) at Possum Creek. Although the air temperature was just above freezing, a bitter northeast wind made it feel much colder, especially crossing the rough open prairie areas. Although I felt old, fat and slow, my time was good enough to win, though.

Armco Park. Searching for (and finding!) Matt Little's lost SI card. The very tip was barely poking out of snow-dusted leaf litter. Actual time was certainly a little longer than 5 minutes, but the exercise value was pretty low!

Armco Park. One of the few really cold days we've had this winter, and moderate winds made it feel even colder, especially crossing the open fields. It wasn't bad once you got moving, though. Although I just loved doing all the wet-foot stream crossings! Actually they were not that bad, and thanks to one last ankle-deep immersion on the run-in to the finish (!!!), I was able to get my shoe laces untied before they froze solid.

WRE Event Advising (2012 US Middle Distance Champs)
test run of a middle distance course, Chatahoochee State Park, GA.
Was there blood? Of course! Wait-a-minute vines and a couple small prickly pear drew a little. But not a lot. And of course there was the obligatory full-body sprawl when a leg went knee-deep in a stump hole. But this was a fun course with pretty fast running and lots of tough navigation. And of course a good splash of red Georgia clay.

No kids showed up for practice today. Basketball practice was moved earlier so Caleb couldn't make it; Brennan had stayed home sick, Sam and Hunter were busy with the robotics team. Headed to Hueston Woods anyway. Shadowed David_Waller while he did a line-O I had set at Hueston Woods.

6c shoes: Jalas hi-top 2010

Ran a 6 control course David designed on the spur of the moment at Hueston Woods, "Chase the Fox" style. I had to find the right spots and hang a streamer. David gave me two minutes head start, then took off in pursuit. I bobbled #1, lost a few seconds to fix a shoe, and aimed off way too far left, putting me on the wrong side of some miserable unmapped deadfall. Leaving 1 was a dogleg, and I could see David coming into 1 (and he saw me) as I ran to 2, dropped a streamer at 2, and took off over the hill for 3. At 3, there was another sharp turn to the left, and as I was climbing the hill away from it, I saw David coming in on the approach. This was going to be a fun race. Fortunately, I hit 4, 5 and 6 dead on, and David made a mistake going from 4 to 5, so I never saw him again. Entertaining way to get some training in.

weights / strength 3:00:00 [3]

Misc. yard and garden: digging, hauling dirt, removing and re-setting brick pavers. Added enough dirt to increase and extend the slope away from the house and eliminate a puddling area a few feet out from the foundation. Imagine doing this kind of work on February 2 in Ohio! Normally the ground would be frozen solid.

walking 15:00 [1]
weight:163lbs

Picked up a large bin-liner's worth of roadside trash from the edges of the forest and field along the road near my house. Amazing how many empty beer bottles and cans one finds, even in a state where having an open alcohol container in a vehicle is a pretty major offense. They are obviously consuming while driving, then discarding the evidence.
