trail and terrain - setting hash trail (live) for Union County practice (terrain running, observation skills, warm-up). Newer kids got to start 3 minutes behind me; Experienced ones 5 minutes. A pack of candy bars was promised to the first 4 to catch me. Nobody actually caught me, although most of the experienced ones finished only a couple minutes behind.

As the kids caught their breath, I passed out maps - they had up to 8 score style controls they could find while working their way back to the parking lot with a roughly 30 minute time limit.

Quote of the day: When a tree falls in the forest, if it doesn't crush an orienteer, its a good day. There was no wind, but an enormous tree crashed down pretty close to a couple kids. I heard it clearly from 100+ meters away.

Note

ice storm. Had planned to do some field checking - conditions dangerous to be in the woods. Lots of fallen branches, power out for just 3 hours here but much longer for others.

Camp Stonybrook. Preliminary survey - determining if we are ready for a full scale professional re-mapping. Stonybrook was originally mapped in 2000 and used annually through 2015. In late spring 2016, a tornado did extensive damage to the wooded portions of the property, which was followed by logging to salvage usable lumber, and which also harvested many of the remaining larger and more valuable trees. The trail network and vegetation needs a complete re-mapping.

Red course at Bill Yeck Park in Centerville, Ohio, set by the King of Pain. Besides a few wet-foot creek crossings, it included the obligatory annual visits to the center of the thicket in the middle of the rough open field, the control deep in the depression, and the control on the massive rootstock that can only be reached by walking the fallen tree trunk across the stream. It may be quirky, but was still great fun, and I found everything pretty cleanly. Several Union County kids did courses, and we made the equally obligatory stop for pizza at Momma Mac's on the way home.
