Hiking at Brookville Lake. Midway Trail, then Adena Trace south to the dam and back. Did not count about 9 minutes of stops to sit and enjoy the view, or about 5 minutes putting out the campfire some idiot boater left burning after having a shore lunch.

I didn't try to separate out any time spent tossing fallen branches off the trail, breaking back encroaching honeysuckle and Russian olive, and pulling up garlic mustard.

Control checking at Forest Run. Got a brief but very thorough drenching from a short rain shower. A few minor map updates. The drafting will take longer - the fields that were cultivated or mowed last year are mostly being allowed to grow up. Last year was the final agricultural lease on the fields at this new park. So most fields have to be changed from cultivated or open to rough open.

Yard and garden. Digging and planting. Turned over part of garden, planted more corn. Transplanted several walnut saplings. Cut some honeysuckle and overgrown forsythia. Pulled and dug weeds. Actual time was probably more like 4 hours.

Helping set up for start and finish at Camp Craig O' meet. Had intended to run a course, but ended up handling a large number of scout and church group registrations, and running out of time, since I needed to leave by noon for Tyler Hertel's wedding. I didn't want to cut it too close and risk getting too bloody and dirty to properly clean up before heading to the wedding.

Hamilton bike trail with Jeremy. Fitton Center north to Canal Rd where both the road and trail were blocked by a utility crew. Did a little subdivision loop then back the trail to Fitton. Pretty consistent pace. Cloudy and cool; light drizzle began in the last mile or two.

Hamilton bike trail from Fitton south to Waterworks and back, plus a little extra. Cold light rain the whole time. About 7 miles at a very slow pace riding with Jeremy while he finished his 20 mile marathon training run; the remainder at a more typical 15mph pace.

Steve Barnhart's brown course at Grant Park. Skipped control 4 out of some sort of sheer blind stupidity. Otherwise a fairly decent run. Lost about 3 minutes overshooting number 8 and 1:20 or so overshooting number 14.

Topo Adventures trail run at Mitchell. About 1/3 blacktop, 1/3 gravel, 1/3 grass (mostly a bit slick and wet). The originally planned 4 mile route was shortened due to closure of the mountain bike trails. Considered doing the 6 mile (2 loops), but still had 4 controls to set out for the O meet, plus all of the start/finish/registration setup.

Setting controls for school program. Approximately 225 4th and 5th graders tried the 11 control score course in nine 30 minute sessions. Assisted by Skyler Hertel (computer) and Ben Hart (starts and round-up of stray kids).

Biggest challenge of the day was when a class of kids showed up in the wrong time slot. I had just finished briefing them and was mid-way through passing out SI cards and starting them when another class showed up "We're supposed to be here and they are not!". Oops. Some kids were already off on the course. So I then had to do a quick briefing and start a whole second class while Skyler furiously entered names into the computer. Both classes ended up getting a few extra minutes, to the probable dismay of the presenters of their next activity.

Took it somewhat easy since I'd just finished dinner, but wanted to get the run in before it got completely dark. First sliver of the waxing crescent moon was visible low in the west.

Miles: 9:54, 10:17, 9:40.

Note: about 575 mile driving day: Green Valley AZ to Clovis NM.

Hiking. Up Madera Canyon on Old Baldy Trail to Josephine Saddle, Baldy Saddle, and then a little ways up the Crest Trail, peak elevation probably 8900 to 9000 feet. High winds, and I didn't really feel like doing the Wrightson summit. Returned via Super Trail thru Riley Saddle to Josephine Saddle, then back down the lower part of Old Baldy Trail back to parking lot. Deer, squirrels, lizards and lots of birds, but nothing terribly exciting (eg bear, cougar, or the Santa Rita jaguar).

SMOC Peach Mountain 3 hour score-O. Cleaned the course with 15 minutes to spare. Still got solidly beaten by Aragorn, Dersu, Mintore et.al. Hilly terrain.

Bobbled a couple minutes on the first two controls. A bit sloppy on a few others. Lost at least 7 to 8 minutes (combined) on two controls where my aiming off was off and I turned the wrong way. I count only 16 of the 30 as good clean spikes. Estimate my total lost time at 19-20 minutes.

Felt good to run almost everything but the steeper uphills and the thicker brushier footing. Still had enough gas in the tank to try to catch the guy 100m ahead of me on the 300m straightaway to the finish. Almost got him too, but he had a little kick left for the final 50. Didn't feel dead, despite carrying no food or water, and only two water controls on the course, and actually felt like I still had good energy to go farther.
