Green course at St Patrick's park. Interesting route choices to the first control; I chose going east over the sledding hill and through the park gate. Probably the best choice, but as soon as I hit the woods it became apparent that the burrs were going to be unburrable. By the time I hit the second control, I was covered in what Orunner calls "Mother Nature's Velcro". A few more controls were in woods and overgrown fields, but after that it was mostly running trails and open areas. A fun course, but I could sure have done without the burrs and thorny briars on the first couple controls.

Control pickup at St Patricks. The first five were pretty easy, although the Mosquitos were annoyingly vicious. When I went back out for another four, the Mosquitos had organized into squadrons, staging an incessant bombardment. You could not pause long enough to untie a control flag without suffering a dozen or more bites. After getting one control, whilst fleeing this assault through dense thorny underbrush in the general direction of the second control, I realized that I no longer had a map! There was little hope of retracing my steps through the wall of green and the equally dense black cloud of bloodsuckers, so I continued on my way, found the second control, and through perseverance and luck (and maybe a little bit of halfway decent map memory), also managed to find the third and fourth. So, fortunately I did not suffer the embarrassment of having to drive back to the start and get another map! The suffering of additional mosquito bites and briar scratches, however, was an essential part of the experience.

Looking for lost control units at St Patrick's. Skyler found one; the second remains in the forest.

Eagle Creek Canoe O meet. 4 hour score course; 18 of 25 controls, scoring 37 of 46 possible points. Partnered with Brennan Hertel. Mostly canoeing with about an hour of running / walking. Sunny and pleasant temperatures, light to moderate winds early on, that eased off as the day went on. We missed the mass start by a few minutes, due to helping the threesome below back to shore after their first tipping episode, which happened as teams were lining up for the start.

Mpage, Skyler, and Jordan tipped 3 times but still got a few controls, ending up with an unreadable dissolved map.

Priscilla and Salinda started out struggling to control their canoe, but soon became master paddlers, getting several controls and covering a lot of the lake.

Harbin. Went looking for two controls that were stolen at the Harbin meet two weeks ago. Found one in the first five minutes, tossed in a copse only a few dozen meters from its original location. Searched extensively for the second and finally found it, within 20 meters of its original location, but it had been thrown up on top of the copse and was barely visible from only one angle. Took a few minutes to find a branch long enough and sturdy enough to hook it and bring it back down to earth.

Bottom line, both controls successfully recovered.

Setting controls for leadership training program at Deer Creek. Much of the time was setting 15 compass bearing bonus points, and setting the 8 "challenge" controls. (Each team has to figure out how to retrieve the control which is 12 to 16 feet up in a tree).

(rest day)

I think the cold itself is over, but still having enough drainage, that I didn't think doing anything too strenuous would be a good idea.

Cold seems to be pretty much over and reduced to a little lingering drainage. Still pretty tired - didn't sleep well the last 3 nights in Paris. Did a little easy walking and yard work today but plan to take it easy at least one more day.
