Parking to the start. Starts were delayed by 4.5 hours due to poor air quality (wildfire smoke) and it was pretty hot (mid 80s).

US Champs Middle Distance at Little Truckee Summit. M65, 2.3k, 75m. Open pine forest with an area of rock detail. Warm (80s), altitude (6500 ft), poor air quality due to wildfire smoke. Odd course design with the line from the start triangle to the first control passing through the final control circle. One group of controls so close together that there were no connecting lines. Course was a bit short fo middle distance, with fastest times about 20 min.

Not a very good run. Two significant errors of 1-1.5 min and a couple smaller ones. Lost contact on the way to 1 and used the finish area to relocate. Made a 90 degree error coming out of 8 and turned a 50 second leg into a >2 min leg. Not clean coming into 8. 5th in M65, 2:38 behind the winner.

I had worked a shift at the Start before I ran and hurried too much to make my assigned start time, even though that wasn't necessary.

From download back to parking (most of it - didn't start my watch right away).

Warm up running around the parking lot. Time and distance estimated.

US National Sprint Championships at Sienna College in Rocklin, CA. "Brown" course (all M65+ and F55+). 1.8k (shortest running distance), 25m climb. A very small, straightforward college campus map at 1:3000. Several OOB construction areas (which apparently changed frequently and made course setting a challenge).

Had a very good run. Overshot 11 by a little but saw the bag and corrected. Some hesitation to 12 after that bobble. First in M65 (16 sec ahead of Rick B and 22 ahead of Dave E), second overall on the course (4 seconds behind Dennis W).

From the splits it appears that the two finish boxes were not synched, with one being 6-7 seconds different than the other. Most people (including me) used the one which gave longer overall times. The run-in from the last control was 48m, so a final split of 10 seconds (rather than 16) seems reasonable for a full-speed run past both controls using SI Air. On my watch I got a total time of 11:23 vs. 11:31 official, starting the watch at the start beep and stoping it after passing the finish. I haven't found any instances where placings were affected, but this is unacceptable for a national championship event.

Wandering around the Model Event on the Sagehen map. Vegetation is over-mapped - only bigger, more obvious vegetation features will be useful at race speed (maybe). Mapped rock features may be hidden by vegetation. Compass and contours seem to be the way to go (although on the model map subtle contour detail could be hidden by vegetation).

Hike at Silver Falls SP, about 20 miles east of Salem, OR. Did a loop along the South Fork of Silver Creek to see two waterfalls (93' and 170' high). Both falls plunge off basalt ledges which are undercut so the trail passes behind the falls. Apparently hiking under rock wreaks havoc with the GPS track, giving me a climb of 418m which I've adjusted to the 400' which the trail guide says our hike was. Distance was also probably a bit shorter than measured. Temperature in the mid-80s but comfortable in the woods and along the stream.

Afterwards we drove to Klamath Falls, OR as we make our way to the Lake Tahoe area. Encountered wildfire smoke as we headed over the ridge east from Eugene, OR and it's now in the unhealthy range in Klamath Falls.

Deschutes Daze - Day 4 - score-O on Peterson Ridge map, south of Sisters, OR. 24 controls with point values from 30 to 100 with a total of 1370. Lots of very open, runnable woods but also areas of manzanita to slow things down. A big canyon bisects the mapped area so there was the option of some steep ups or downs and you certainly only wanted to cross it once. Lots of rock features, some quite large and a moderate trail network.

Started off intending to keep things fairly low key but running through the open woods felt pretty good so I went longer than intended. About halfway through I toned things down and started walking more. Probably could have gotten more controls at the end but decided to just head in. Visited 17 controls for a total of 1010 points.

Deschutes Daze - Day 3 at Dutchman Flats (Middle Dutchman map). Green course - 5.4k, 265m. Dutchman Flats in all its splendor! Mostly open forest with plenty of features and contour detail. And all of it excellently mapped. Nice course by Tony Pinkham. Sunny and upper 70s to low 80s.

A very good run. All the bags showed up where I looked for them. Several hesitations and a few minor relocations but kept map contact and focused through the course. Lots of climb (in addition to the 2k, 100m climb to get to the start) and a moderate amount of deadfall to cross, so pretty physical. Elevation is over 6000 ft, so less oxygen than I'm used to.

Trail Run 35:50 intensity: (4:33 @0) + (26:31 @1) + (4:46 @2) 3.14 km (11:25 / km) +20m 11:04 / km

Backdown the hill from finish to download, then back to the car after an extended stop at the Event Center. Jogged occasionally on the downhills.
