Read about a cool new bike shop called "Mellow Johnny's". It's in Austin Texas, owned by guess who (the name's a hint) , and it will have hard core racing bikes but mainly cater to commuters. They'll have bike lockers and showers too for folks that want to commute along the Lance Armstrong Bikeway. Also a Carmichael training centre in the basement.
Lance's trying to promote a European type bike culture, more bikes and less cars. Good on the lad!
Out with Scooby, Ms Scooby and the Archer for an O-training session, picking up some controls from the Thomass. Scooby ran up from Bolton first- He's an animal! I don't mind coaching beginner orienteers, as I can point out so many errors I've made in the past! They were quite game, even when pounding through deep snow.

Out with Bash to pick up the far matrix. Some running, some walking while wearing snowshoes. I got to see the site of my shame where I was so-o-o close to picking up Z with a 13 minute lead, until I got dis-oriented and went to 7 instead. Nice to get into some new terrain, and Bash had some good pointers for me.
Absolute bluebird winter day- my favourite weather in the world.
Some good pics on Bash's log.

Workout 1 while installing my new carbon fiber seat on the new 'bent(900g lighter!), and watching the World Cup XC in Canmore. No shots of VO2max though, but Chandra won gold.
Thomass race in deep snow and very hilly terrain. A great course by LeAnimal.
I used snowshoes, and was running and navigating really well today. I led 1-3, then ran up front with Billy W and Laslo to 4 and back up to D where we split, as I skipped 2 controls. I led the whole way through the first box, broke trail and nailed them all. Still breaking trail all the way to control 10 (of 11) with a 10 minute lead, navigating clean without seeing a soul or any tracks. The only place I had gotten turned around a bit was near 6.
I was thinking that this one might just be in the bag in under 90 minutes, and how much I love LeAnimal (Well, her course design) and then it hit me- The reason I was messed up at 6 was that I was headed for a control in the box, then when I got turned around I headed right to 7! I was within 75M of the control, too. I turned back and ran *all* the way back to X, then schlepped the full way back to finish poorly after a 25 minute split 10-11.
Still my favourite Thomass ever, even with a lousy finish time.

Warmup, cooldown and picking up controls. Interesting to see where everybody followed my tracks, and where they varied a bit. Some better routes, some worse.
